I read the picture book at Target today.

It's actually a pretty interesting story so far, though I do have some questions that I'm sure the movie will answer.

      Hide contents

    • The movie is named after Miguel's grandmother, and frankly I will be surprised if she gets more than like twenty words either way
    • It gets very Brave-esque at one point. I'm sure you can guess at what.

Wait, what?! Is sort of something secret there? Here in Mexico the marketing focusses in those two points, the first one makes me think it will resonate pretty good with audiences

  4. OCTOBER 06-08 WEEKEND. BLADE RUNNER 2049 TOPS THE CHART. MOUNTAIN BETWEEN US AND KINGSMAN 2 COME CLOSE.

    Blade Runner 2049

    - 61.7% behind Gravity, 31.5% under The Martian and 37.6% under Mad Max: Fury Road.

    - PRO: 0 competition.  CON. Just like @Purple Minion said: sci-fi is not great in Mexico unless you're a mexican director and your film counts with Oscar buzz

    - Kingsman: The Golden Circle aims for $110M-$120M total

    - It passed the 10M admissions milestone, $500M keeps like a missing shot

Theoretically, Justice League should gross more than the other 2 and reach 700M lc. But several recent, big movies had not reached their expectations because of the awful leg syndrome, so WB should be happy with 600M lc

With WW's success, Flash popularity (yeah, he's VERY popular around here), no big competition until TLJ and Jumanji and a 5-Day OW i would be shocked if it does less than $650M. The movie is like in a Furious 7 status (4 weeks free of competion and an amazing release date).

3 hours ago, Purple Minion said:

Jedi will end up outhulking the competition; the Wars should be able to go north of 400M lc

Don't think TLJ has a bigger OW than TFA and definitely no better legs, it faces Ferdinand, Jumanji (the original is huge in here so we'll see how nostalgia plays) and The Greatest Showman. Star Wars is weak outside of CDMX.

3 hours ago, Purple Minion said:

can't see Thor3 doing as good as SHC.

Hype is strong with Ragnarok, some polls made by Cinemex and Cinépolis put it over Justice League in terms of anticipation. All depends on how it holds facing Coco, HDD, Jigsaw and JL.

And how would you label it? A remake? A reboot?

It's original but it just seems another teen horror movie with cliches. When i saw the trailer i thought in a Black Mirror episode, Groundhog Day, Butterfly Effect and even in Edge of Tomorrow.

  7. WEEKLY REPORT

    It

Should pass 10M admissions the upcoming days. First horror and B-15 film to do that

    - $500M depends on how much competition affects

    - 5th biggest movie of the year behind FOTF, DM3, BATB and SM:HC, with Ragnarok and JL still to come will finish at #6 (Coco still can surprise and Star Wars... well, is not a phenomenon in Mexico)

    Kinsman: The Golden Circle

    - Today faces Blade Runner: 2049 and that will determine how much more can do

    Me Gusta pero me Asusta

    - Amazing WoM, is getting closer and closer to the 2017's Top 3 of local films.

    - A funny fact is that is a film with no big-stars on its cast, also, is not distributed by a major (WB or Videocine)

  8. SEPTEMBER 29-OCTOBER 1 WEEKEND. KINGSMAN WINS THE WEEKEND AS PENNYWISE STRUGGLES TO REACH $500M

    Kingsman: The Golden Circle

62% higher than 'The Secret Service'

    - $100M is a lock, its only competition is Blade Runner 2049 next weekend

    It

Decent drop, but $500M looks practically dead. Earthquake destroyed its legs

    - 10M admissions still in game, would be the first rated B-15 and the first horror movie to do that.

    Me Gusta pero me Asusta

    - Playing so much better than the average local films (whose 2nd weekend drop is usually 30%-35%)

    - $100M is a possibility if keeps playing like that

    Universal VS Cinépolis

This weekend, Cinépolis didn't support another Universal distributed film; Lego Ninjago, which barely made $8M, so much less than The Lego Adventure ($50.69M) and Lego Batman ($50.6M). The other Universal's title that wasn't released by the biggest mexican chain was American Made, that is saying "goodbye" to the Top 10 with barely $20.3M

    # MOVIE WEEKEND % CHANGE TOTAL (MXN) TOTAL (USD) ADM. TOTAL ADM.
    1 Kingsman: The Golden Circle $41,31   $41,31 $2,40 790K 790K
    2 It $35,58 -52,71% $440,2 $24,23 750K 9,28
    3 Me Gusta pero me Asusta $21,06 -21,97% $64,43 $3,53 759,9K 1,51
    4 Lego Ninjago $8,87   $8,87 $487K 201,7K 201,7
    5 Happy Family $7,38 -0,27% $40,32 $2,22 168,7K 970K
    6 mother! $6,91 -46,30% $27,45 $1,50 124,2K 540K
    7 Wind River $4,46   $4,46 $245K 72,2K 72,2K
    8 Isla Calaca $2,01 -41,56% $16,12 $892K 47,4K 407,2K
    9 Attraction $1,96 -46,88% $7,92 $435K 42,6K 187,9K
    10 American Made $1,6 -65,29% $20,33 $1,10 31,5K 443,8K

    SECOND THOUGHTS

    - Lego Ninjago is a WB's film, however, in Mexico Warner doesn't operate as distributor from a few years ago, so most of their movies are distributed by Universal. Now, the fact that Cinepolis didn't exhibit this movie or American Made did affect seriously both films, because despite that they have a similar number of screens (3,239 Cinepolis VS 2,705 Cinemex), Cinépolis grosses even 3 times more than Cinemex, plus, IMAX screens are Cinépolis' exclusive, Junior Theatres are their invention and they have mnuch more 4D screens.

    - The failure of the Uni-Cinépolis distribution deal of Ninjago couldn't make happier to Disney. Coco opens on October 27th and with no wide animation since The Emoji Movie back in august, it will surely do tons of money.

    10 Guardians (Zashchitniki) $830K $2,62 $21,41 $1,19 67,3K 540K

Today opens: Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Lego Ninjago, The Lost City of Z, Wind River, The Vineyard and Un Profil Pour Deux.

Ok, this weekend became kinda interesting since Ninjago is not being released in Cinepolis. Seems #1 will be disputed between Eggsy and Pennywise.

  10. Disney has confirmed the release date of Coco, it will launch theatres on October 27th, one month before than in US!

Thor: Raganrok is scheduled for November 3rd, although probably be moved for November 2 to take advantage of Día de los Muertos holiday. It may sound crazy to release two Disney's properties with a 6 days gap, but they'll probably book 5,000+ screens for both films and with a holiday and zero competition until Justice League that should be a win-win.

Finally, the opening for Justice League will be massive! It opens on November 16 (Thu) and November 20 (Mon) is holiday in the country, so we may see a 5-Day OW of even $400M!

  12. I don't know if it's a record but is impressive to see these three things

    - A horror movie has topped #1 for six weekends in a row.

    - Also, these six weekends are being ruled by WB titles, we'll see if next weekend Ninjago can keep that.

    - Finally, those #1 of the past seven weekends are Rated B-15 films, we'll see if Kingsman: The Golden Circle and Blade Runner 2049 can continue that trend the next two weekends

EDIT. Hazlo como Hombre is rated B-15, it was #1 on 11-13 August weekend
