  1. Crazy Rich Asians (12:45PM; Friday, August 17) 55% full in a 128 seat auditorium TRAILERS: A Simple Favor (Henry Golding is an extremely attractive man. Thank you all for coming to my TED Talk.) Searching Night School What Men Want Boy Erased (Lucas Hedges is my President) Life Itself Smallfoot A Star is Born MOVIE: It's fun! A very effective and enthusiastic use of romcom formula, alongside truly extravagant production design. And as an Asian-American, I must say that it's really very nice to see a cast like this in a major studio release. None of this is anything that hasn't been said by other people more eloquently, but I just wanted to register my thoughts as well. Also, Michelle Yeoh is an international treasure, but you knew that already.
  2. The Meg (2:00PM; Friday, August 10) 75% full in a ~150 seat theater TRAILERS: A-X-L The Predator Peppermint (I have a bad feeling about this movie) Overlord The House with a Clock In its Walls (this one generated a pretty palpable positive reaction; other than that, total silence throughout the previews) Venom Shazam! Aquaman I wish trailers weren't so tailored to the movie they played before. I wanted a Boy Erased or Beautiful Boy to come barrellng through in the middle of all the fun superhero stuff and just make everyone sad. MOVIE: General silence, no real reactions on the way out. I think this movie will probably do better than expected this weekend, but it's not going to be the surprise hit of the summer. Nobody should ever try to make a $170 million B-movie.
  3. I don't know if hiring costumed choreographers for all movie theaters would be an effective anti-piracy deterrent.
  4. The entire time I was watching the trailer of Bland White Christians, all I wanted was to see Nick Robinson playing a Bland White Gay.
  5. A Wrinkle in Time March 13, 1:10PM, 30% full TRAILERS: Hotel Transylvania 3 God's Not Dead 3 (having read that @Morieris got a Love, Simon trailer in front of their screening, I desperately wanted that trailer to appear immediately after this mess of Evangelical handwringing.) Sherlock Gnomes A Miracle Season Christopher Robin Mary Poppins Returns THOUGHTS ON THE FILM: Movie is mediocre, but pretty. Crowd was quiet.
  6. Phantom Thread February 17, 1:00PM; 50% full auditorium Trailers: Sicario 2: Cartel Boogaloo A Quiet Place Oceans 8 Isle of Dogs Tully 7 Days in Entebbe Thoughts on the movie: I saw this with some of my family. I loved it, but my dad and my grandma both hated it. I tried to explain why I thought it was so good, but I kinda had to let this one go, since a thematic analysis of Phantom Thread goes through the BDSM route a few too many times to comfortably discuss with your relatives over dinner. So I mostly stuck to the sound design and the acting.
  7. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri February 10, 1:00PM; 70% full Trailers: Tully Black Panther Red Sparrow Isle of Dogs Thoughts on the film: Didn't Martin McDonagh say that he wrote part of this script like ten years ago? Oh boy, you can tell. It works from scene-to-scene, though. And of course, Frances McDormand is brilliant. Audience seemed to be really into the movie.
  8. I got that trailer before Lady Bird as well. I'm assuming it's a fellow A24 release, and therefore one of those distributor-mandated selections, because nobody would organically connect those two.
  9. You don't know a good time until you've been in a room of sixtysomething white people feverishly whispering to each other "Is that Cher?!" (P.S. I love your avatar. He's so great, isn't he?)
  10. The Post January 13, 1:00PM, 60% full Trailers: Chappaquiddick Sicario 2: Cartel Boogaloo Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again (most of the room was audibly surprised by the Cher reveal. I had already seen the trailer online, so I've already gone through all the stages of grief.) Annihilation Love, Simon Red Sparrow Movie: The definition of a crowdpleaser. Not great, but it hits the spot.
  11. January 6, 12:30PM Darkest Hour 60% full in a ~180 seat auditorium (but we don't have to count the guy in the front wearing the MAGA hat if we don't want to) Trailers: The Commuter Annihilation Alpha (what even is this movie??? like, is it real and coming out or is it just going to be a weird dream we all had?) 12 Strong 7 Days in Entebbe The Post Phantom Thread Thoughts: Well, that's a movie that exists.
  12. Murder on the Orient Express November 10, 3:45PM, 90% full in 150 seat auditorium Trailers: Darkest Hour Molly's Game Downsizing All the Money in the World (with the big last-30-seconds Spacey reveal and all) The Post Tomb Raider Red Sparrow Audience seemed to like the movie, following all the twists and turns. I was lukewarm on it—it's a pretty film, but it's awfully workmanlike in how it barrels through the plot, and seems much happier when it can just relish in its own prettiness and flourishes.
  13. That appears to work. I'll try this next week!
  14. I've been unable to access the Derby once, ever since registering my account. Normally, it comes up with an ASP error, which I could not post because my password was visible in the header of the message. After changing it, I still can't access the Derby, but there's a new message now: Desktop, Chrome 59.0.3071.115, Mac OS 10.12.6
