    Did it ?

2.252 billions minutes for a 155 minutes movie is about 14.5 millions "views"

1.667 billions minutes of Soul for a 107 minutes movies is about 15.58 millions "views"

Fairly close. Using minutes could be a nice ways to compare tv series, specially sitcoms between each other, but between movies would be arguably a bit of a strange ways.

In the context of needing to gain viewer at a much higher price point to do those figure, it can be seen has the most impressive performance, not sure about blowing it out of the water.

I guess there are always qualifiers when a DCEU movie succeeds at something. But WW84 was also seen in movie theaters by an additional 1.8 to 2 million seeing it in theaters. And as someone mentioned, Disney+ has about 10 million more subs than HBOMAX. So blow I agree with Krissykins.

Just wondering whether anyone thinks that ET is the highest grossing movie of all time, since it was in less theaters and ticket prices were lower when it was released?

This outcome was predicted on 12/30.

Per the WSJ, Patty Jenkins will get $13M and Gal Gadot will receive $15M in renegotiated deals with WB. Good for them!

Do you have a link for this? Seems like a pretty huge pay day, especially for Patty! A director making that much money on one film is insane. Good for both of them! Well deserved since they were underpaid for the first movie.

Pretty good, all things considered. I don’t know what people expected at the box office with 60% box office closed in US (notably in all major markets) and 95% closed in Canada. The success/failure of WW84 will ultimately be judged by what the streaming numbers are. This is something we’ve known or should have known from the time Warner made their HBOMAX announcement.

Saw this a second time and yep...seems like I will be defending  this movie for many years to come. I just love how sincere it is.

Agreed! Everyone has their own tastes. Just as much as we love it, you have people who don’t. And that’s okay. I do feel that some are hyperbolic in calling it the worst movie ever made. For example, everyone I know loves Scarface. I think it’s one of the most overrated movies I have ever seen.

Seems WW84 is a victim of its own “success” at the box office. Had it made 10 million opening weekend, everyone would have called it a nice opening. Then the drop this week would have been slightly less exaggerated.

Looks like HBOMAX will get a fair number of new subscribers, but I think they should be more thoughtful about this strategy with their 2021 slate. How many movies will yield WW84 type returns in new subs? Personally, I think it’s best to release some of their movies in theaters when it’s safer to do so and not when only 39% of theaters are open for business here in the US and Europe is pretty much closed.

I’ll be very interested to see the stats released on new subs from Warner at the months end. After all, that was their endgame.

Right now, it seems at a certain late point in Dec, HBO Max was at 17M US-only subscribers...

For comparison, the article states that for US-only subscribers, Amazon Prime has 50M (gained 7M in 2020), Netflix is ?? (but gained 5M in 2020), Disney Plus is 37M (gained 13M for 2020), Hulu is about 35M (gained 8M in 2020), and Apple TV is 8M (gaining only 4M in 2020)...

Depending on if these numbers estimated an end of year growth or just took the actuals by a certain date, they may go up slightly, especially D+ and HBO Max, since they had the 2 big releases...https://www.fastcompany.com/90590593/netflix-maintains-its-lead-over-streaming-rivals-as-americans-add-disney-hbo-max

PS - If anyone has the WSJ access, it would be great to see if that's exactly where this author swiped all the numbers b/c I'd trust them more:)...they reference the WSJ analysis, but I won't pay for that:)...

EDIT: Reposting from the streaming board...

That would be excellent if those numbers were correct. I figure that at about $15/month, WW84 would likely need to have earned them 2.5 million subscribers who keep the service for one year. It’s a lot but if they increased from 8 million to 12.5 million and then to 17 million in this quarter, then they are there and would need to keep about half of the new subscribers who presumably signed up during the WW84 spike.

For me it's a non-starter .loving Wonder woman but I wouldn't pay $6 a month for this the way it's set up.

    Especially inside other apps.

I hear ya! There’s no way that the average family can possibly afford all these streaming services. Right now, I have five of them: Netflix, Disney+, HBOMAX, Amazon (as a Prime member), and Hulu. I will probably cancel Hulu. It’s the one I watch the least.

Hbo system is the clunkiest dumpster fire ever. I did a free trial for hulu and HBOmax combined. Hulu worked perfect instantly. Hbo not so much. Took forever.

Definitely cancelling after watching this movie.

You’re not the only one. I’ve read that several people have had issues. It’s on them to make their platform more user friendly. It’s too bad too, because their content is great.

    Moderation

@Ms Lady Hawk please calm down. We understand you are frustrated that people are being too harsh over a movie you love. And sure, Charlie is being a touch abrasive. But your behavior here (and in the past few days) is beyond ridiculous and beyond tiring. Trying to paint other people as haters solely because they aren't being extra nice and praising WW1984 and/or its box office performance isn't making things better, nor does it strengthen your arguments. Rather you're acting extremely childish and it seems you're just here to start flame wars and get into fights with others rather than actually argue against something. You're an adult, so act like on.

And just as a reminder that you don't have to read what dissenters are saying. You can put users who aren't being nice to your children's movie onto your Ignore list. It's certainly a better way than throwing a hissy fit against Charlie or WandaLegion.

Take part in this kind of behavior again you and will recieve warning points and possibly a threadban.

Sure enough, I will stop going back and forth as you’ve requested. However, please know that the negativity was not started by me on this thread. In any event, Happy New Year!

  9. Wasn’t the previous post about how poorly it was doing in Taiwan because Soul was about to pass it in dailies? All over the place in this thread. Honestly, I don’t get how a box office “guru” would categorize a movie that has done respectable numbers at the box office with 60% of theaters closed in the US- which by the way, was not the case when Tenet was released as having terrible box office numbers. What was the expectation? If they were so rosey, then all studios should go ahead and release their movies. Practically all of Europe is closed and many other countries are following social distancing measures- including some Asian counties. This really isn’t that hard. Movie is number one SVOD after a week of release and yet because of subjective RT scores, it’s a failure. Man,  please!

Trying to brush off numbers with positive spin and calling the other person a hater is not a good look imo. But I guess I probably shouldn’t say much more than that, this dynamic is pretty played out already.

What?! Oh, you’re talking to me? Lol...

I am not the one spinning numbers. I have been calling out those spinning numbers negatively. To suggest that the world is back to normal is lunacy. It is not. And WW84 has performed very well in Taiwan under the circumstances. Anyway, moving right along.

You don't even need to try. The South Korea thread on forum is the best place for Korean box office on English internet. No need to follow the idiot who is telling you that a film just having 3.7% occupancy is "dominating" box office.

    giphy.gif

Proportionality during a pandemic though. Korea is not 100% open. You cannot have numbers without context. If other movies have 1% occupancy then it’s dominating. WW is not the only movie in theaters. Jackie Chan released one after WW84 there.

    we're done here.

Good to quit while you’re ahead. As they say, you’re entitled to your opinion but not your own facts.

This is a question of proportionality. If there’s a limited amount of releases at any time, then you judge a movie for the circumstances under which it was released. Yeah, we’re done,  but I’ll leave this here.

BTW, I have been consistent on RT scores. I joined this forum around the time when the first WW was blowing up. There are probably a handful of times/very rare where I mention RT scores for any movie. This is probably the most consistent conversation that I have had about it.

WW was only English release in India, did ₹32cr or $5mn on IIRC 400 screens.

WW84 has so far done ₹11.5-12cr Approx ($1.5mn) in 7 days on 1700 screens, will probably do ₹17-18cr in full run. It was expected to do ₹70cr ($10mn) in normalcy. This is what I said in India thread.

Who else will be on top? It's only film running on 2k screens there.

Today on New Year's eve, it sold 27,430/749,773 admits. That's 3.65% occupancy on New Year's eve. It did so bad, we didn't even track in Korea after OD. @WandaLegion I think tracked till XMAS.

These aren’t hard to find. But thanks!

#WonderWoman1984  posted a healthy total at Indian Box-office on Christmas weekend

Film collected 8.05cr on first weekend and it should easily surpass #Tenet's lifetime gross(11cr) at Indian BO soon

    #WW84  #WonderWoman

In #Korea, #WonderWoman1984  kept in #1 dominating the exhibition circuit with 44% market share, grossing 214k on THU, #NewYearsEve.
#WW84 ’s cume is 3.2M at local #BoxOffice. With 27k admissions on THU, it’s been seen by 391k people in #SouthKorea, despite current restrictions.

3 more reviews away from rotten. playing safe, may be 5.

As far as I am concerned, this is very overrated. Should have been rotten from the word go like Mutants and Dark Phoenix. Worst superhero film since Suicide Squad that I have seen. I haven't seen Mutants and Dark Phoenix. Also not including stuff like Bloodshot, Hellboy.

Ad hominem! States nothing about nothing. Just attacks and opinions on a movie you don’t like. That’s fine. We all have our opinions. Facts are that the verdict on this movie’s performance at the box office and to a greater extent streaming are still to be determined. . I don’t care about the RT score past opening week. Hardly no anyone does.

    Who said that?

It's a flop in both markets. The commentary on film was soft because well "hey at least a new film released and some theaters get occupancies", otherwise it has grossed $1.5mn on 800 theaters in India.

Hahaha! Don’t ruin your reputation on this. First, I knew it wasn’t doing badly in both countries because you haven’t posted any negatives in either countries’ threads. Next, it’s possible that it may equal the first WW’a total in India. In Korea, it has stayed number one despite some COVID restrictions. Thank goodness, I follow some others in the know on Twitter like Luiz Fernando.

It feel like initial reviews were planned that way. The reception is strictly poor in the three major markets I track the audience metrics; China, Korea and India.

But box office have not been bad in Korea and India. In fact, they’ve been good so far. At the end of the day, that’s the biggest factor in the studio’s consideration for a sequel. In fact, all the metrics are geared toward gauging and promoting profitability. WW84 is already the most streamed movie of 2020. It’s box office has been fine for a opening in a global pandemic. The most determinative aspect is still unknown though. Let’s see how many subscriptions HBOMAX was able to garner for the movie. If it’s significant, then they’ll be happy and move on to planning WW3. If it isn’t, then perhaps this is an Amazing Spider-Man situation where there’s a slight chance that they MAY consider making some changes prior to moving forward with the next movie.
