  1. According to Maoyan, none of the other major movies has many showtimes listed yet for next weekend. Outside Black Panther people have few options to buy tickets in advance. For example, Operation Red Sea has only 510 shows listed for 3/9. It is currently making 130-150million yuan daily this weekend. I am surprised how well this film is doing 3 weeks after release and it remains to be seen how many screens it will lose next weekend. It may be a real competition for Black Panther in its fourth week. In comparison Black Panther has 35462 shows listed for 3/9. Due to unexpected strong holds from several local films, Black Panther might not be breaking out as much in its opening weekend. Now good WOM is NEEDED for its legs.
  2. I understand your concern. However, Black Panther is now an event movie. It doesn't need WOM to build an audience, the audience are already there. Based on comments on Korean/Taiwan/HK movie review sites, people might not love the movie, they don't detest it either. Many simply find the movie "boring" and "average". Even if it's considered an "average" Marvel film, it has good photography and physically attractive actors. It will do well in China.
  3. Black Panther has the weakest rating out of all recent Marvel films in South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Weaker WOM hasn't affected its boxoffice in any of those regions. Many people are excited about Infinity War in China and they will go see Black Panther to complete their Marvel collection. There is no need to worry about its boxoffice.
  4. Depends on where you look. I would say the WOM is mixed to decent in Hong Kong and Taiwan, as well as in South Korea. The film is doing very well in East Asian regions because the Chinese New Year is the most important holiday over there. Usually the festivity goes on for a week or two. Schools are out mostly. It is the film preceding Infinity War and Marvel has become hugely popular everywhere. The film doesn't need great WOM to succeed. On China's movie review site Douban, it currently has a rating of 7.0 from users who have seen the movie outside China, which is average. But Marvel is also very popular in China and it should do well regardless of WOM. It will also benefit from lack of competitions. The current big movies will be at the end of their runs by then and there aren't other major openings for a while.
