  1. from the trailers it seemed like they turned this sequel into a generic action movie (the first movie didn't even have guns iirc) when the first movie was way more character driven. so I have been curious to see how the reception on this will be.

on the other hand, koreans ate up Extreme Job (2019) last year and that was as generic as action comedies go so who knows.

The film is expected to awaken the box office, which fell into a slump after the rapid spread of COVID-19. Yeon Sang Ho revealed that he never pushed back the release date of the film, explaining that it was always slated to be released in July. He remarked, “I think this film will mark the beginning of the revival of the film industry.”

As I said in the other thread, almost impossible to do a theatrical release in Latin America, South Asia, China, and MENA until late August/early September. These countries would probably account for a huge amount of Tenet's gross under a normal release and PVOD is rarely used in these countries.

Latin America and China I get but are Nolan movies more popular than usual in MENA or South Asia?

also Latin America isn't really THAT crazy about Nolan tbh so maybe they can sacrifice that market. Inception only made 10M in Brazil and 8M in Mexico and Interstellar made 5M in Brazil & 5.7M in Mexico.

so Nolan in Latin America isn't really comparable to superhero movies that do 15M-30M each in Brazil/Mexico easily. and we don't even know if Tenet will be another Inception/Interstellar type hit

it's really just China that they can't sacrifice.

Opening with one of the biggest markets out of commission is a much easier lift than opening without *both* of the two biggest markets.

Yeah digital US release and theatrical OS release is a good choice since VOD in the US is 40% of box office revenue, but there are a couple of OS markets where VOD is very low like China,Mexico and Brazil. And there is no timeline when they’ll get the pandemic under control there or when they will re-open theaters (in China’s case)

I'm hearing pretty good stuff about The Old Guard but I still have this feeling that it's another one of those unimaginative and forgettable action films that never actually indulge in their craziness and have fun with themselves. I'm pretty skeptical especially because every single action movie this year, except for one, were exactly like what I described above. Netflix also made an action film just like that a bit over a month ago.

yeah you're not going to like it. the action is weaker than extraction but the lore/worldbuilding was promising. I feel this should've been a mini-series.

  7. Palm Springs (2020) was pretty cool, one of those high concept indies that keep its energy through out the whole thing. I'm pretty sure this idea was done multiple times before but i l really liked how heartfelt and feel good it got towards the end. there's an important mid-credits scene at the end btw, almost missed it

out of this weekend's new releases that I have seen (Old Guard, Relic, Palm Springs) this one i enjoyed the most, might see First Cow tmw

  8. This can be exploited later if everyone just starts making recordings of good plays from years ago in the hopes of having those recordings compete for Oscars. And it’s not like this was a play that failed with the tonys and that it needs more exposure from Oscars or anything

outside of the actual play, I could only see this getting editing/cinematography nom if it was eligible?

comparing live broadway acting to movie acting is not fair imo because it seems to me that giving a great performance live is a lot harder than giving one in previously shot movies but what do I know.

I was looking for something that somebody would let me direct and it’s easier to get something made if it’s based on a book, or a comic book, or a movie that’s already existed,” Kaufman told the Wall Street Journal. “The producer I work with happened to have a deal with Netflix. I don’t know that Netflix knew going in that I was going to make it into something that was less of a thriller than the book, and I don’t think I knew that either.

Kaufman notes his own “terrible” box office record when it comes to films he’s both written and directed, like 2008’s “Synecdoche, New York” and 2015’s “Anomalisa,” as opposed to screenplays he wrote for other directors. He explained how it was much easier to get an original screenplay made earlier in his career.

“I could play around and experiment, but the business has changed enormously, and it all happened around 2008 when studios stopped making movies and started making tentpoles,” said Kaufman. “The reason something like Netflix attracts filmmakers is because there’s nowhere else to make those things. It’s infuriating to me when people say Netflix is ruining movies because—no, movies ruined movies, studios ruined movies, and that’s the truth.”

Kaufman went on to explain how an original musical screenplay he wrote called “Frank or Francis” — with big movie stars attached — couldn’t even get financed for a budget of $11 million, which is why he’s started branching out into writing novels as well.

The long-rumored project is very real, according to two people currently working on it. The game is in development at a Warner Bros.-owned studio, Avalanche Software in Salt Lake City, Utah, and is scheduled for release late next year for platforms including the upcoming Sony Corp. PlayStation 5 and Microsoft Corp. Xbox Series X, said the people, who requested anonymity over fears they would be fired for speaking publicly about an unannounced game.
