Directing other people's scripts.
Edit: Just saw that Josh Singer, the writer of First Man, also wrote Maestro. I think Chazelle would've honestly been a better fit for that than Cooper.
Oh man, didn't know he died today. Was introduced to him through his analysis of Nolan's films (and was hoping we'd get a 3rd edition of his book on Nolan, after Tenet and Oppenheimer), and he's probably my favourite contemporary film theorist. RIP
Trolls 3 had early screenings a couple weeks before it came out that I believe they didn't add to the preview gross (someone could double check). But even then 2 out of at least a dozen isn't much.
Not too familiar with Nichols outside of Midnight Special (which I remember liking) but this really looks like one of those mediocre crime movies from the 2010s. Like The Drop of Black Mass or White Boy Ricky.
The Lost City had both romance and action too and premiered at SXSW too. People forget how hard it is for an original movie (I know this is based on a TV show but Im gonna treat it as an original film for obvious reasons) to break the $200 mil mark. The last time a live-action original movie grossed over $200 mil DOM was 11 years ago. I don't see what this movie has that would break this 11 year streak.
The movie could still do well, and be within the top 15 highest grossing films of the year, but $200 mil seems hard.
How do you continue outdoing yourself with your ignorance? Like what you say here about the first movie's reception is provably untrue. It's pretty obvious you have no clue what you are talking about and I don't even see you learning from what more experienced users say. Sorry but I had to say this before I block you.
I don't see why Fall Guy would do better than stuff Bullet Train or Free Guy. Original action comedies seem to have a ceiling (and based on Argylle, no floor). Dont see it going over $100mil DOM/$300 mil WW unless it has great WoM.
GxK is doing quite well in terms of online metrics btw. The 2nd trailer didn't even drop off a cliff as it happens with films that have strong early interest but die closer to release (see Matrix Resurrections, The Marvels). Doing better than Rise of the Beasts (since @M37 brought it up). I think it pulls off a $70 mil opening at least.
Do you have any comps with other movies with the same number of user ratings (400 ratings)? Avatar 2 currently has 4.2 audience score, Oppenheimer has a 4.3. Wondering if those films started off with a 4.4 and dropped when more ratings got added.
It makes a lot of sense why someone with Villeneuve's sensibilities would say that. And I personally agree too. Was thinking about how I saw a bunch of Mike Leigh films last year, which very heavily rely on dialogue, but it's really the images from those movies that's stuck in my head (which speaks to Leigh's talent as a filmmaker). But this could just be because I'm bad at remembering dialogue (I can't remember song lyrics even if Ive listened to a song a 1000 times to save my life either).
Ngl, a little surprised it took New Line this long to produce some elevated horror. But I guess it makes sense considering that the Conjuring well has finally dried up and they gotta find a new horror avenue.
Just realized Marion Cotillard hasn't had an on-screen appearance in a Hollywood film for 8 years now (only a voice role in Dolittle since). I really thought she was in more recent Hollywood stuff but I guess it's just because I saw her in Annette a few years back (which is is entirely in English but is a French production)
Out of all the currently working major directors, I think Edwards has the most intuitive sense of how to use CGI after James Cameron, so a fast turn around should be fine.
The Kings Speech made around $600 mil WW adjusted to inflation btw. @titanic2187 is right in the sense that Oppenheimer being both a big financial success and a BP winner isn't that unique in the entire history of Oscar's. It's just that films like Oppenheimer don't make much money anymore.
Hollywood accounting is very, very opaque and confusing so none of this matters in the end, but the movie should add another 100 mil or so in ancillaries. Will be in the red by a couple million and probably closer to breaking even than The Color Purple
