  1. Cinemark in Salt Lake City is starting to post their Joker sets for preview night, and so far, with 50% of theaters reporting, the show count is 67. This compares to the following counts for this weekend's openers, all with 100% reporting: Granthams 58 Astra 46 Sly Killing lots of People 34 I don't have exact comparisons for the year's earlier blockbusters, but I'm guessing the screen total is probably going to be behind only Cap Marvel, Avengers, and TLK when the dust settles.
  2. Any sense of the French critical reaction yet? There had to have been a contingent of French journalists at Venice.
  3. The only other tv-to-film I can think of that really broke out was that first Sex in the City movie, but that was a while ago. I think DA has a bigger demo than is widely assumed... I know a lot of under-30's who are actually hyped for this... but I can't imagine it's going to hold strong past the first few weeks. It'll make a lot before then though.
  4. Salt Lake City 9/14 update for next weekend, Ad Astra v Downton Abbey. Sugarhouse Cinemark luxury theater, 5 showtimes each, Astra in the big auditorium. Preview night Ad Astra 2 Granthams 57 Friday Astra 10 D.A. 130 Saturday Astra 6 D.A. 110 Total Astra 18 (easiest computation this year) D.A. 297 Game, set, and match to the aristocracy. (Sunday is also selling well except for the 9:30 show, which is of course too late to be out anyway. 😴)
  5. Just got out of a screening In Salt Lake (absolutely loved it... funny, terrifying, and without a doubt, one of the most emotional horror films I've ever seen) and the evening walk ups were HUGE. I actually thought about taking a picture because there was literally a line out the door, and I can't recall that ever happening before. I think the WOM on this is going to be great. 9/10 and I can't wait to see what Andy M does on his next picture. 🏃‍♂️
  6. Gotta be next week. They're letting It 2 take center stage this weekend, and then I'll bet Joker goes on sale either Tuesday or Wednesday, after the Monday Night screening at TIFF.
  7. It Chapter 2 Final Report for Salt Lake City. Cinemark Sugarhouse, 3:40 local time, 8 screenings. 5:00 PM 61/104 6:00 PM 38/62 7:00 PM 48/63 7:30 PM 30/62 8:40 PM 75/107 9:40 PM 44/62 10:40 PM 38/62 11:15 PM 24/62 Total 358/584 = 61.3% 73.7% of Lion King = $141.2 OW 177% of Once Upon =$71.4 322% of John Wick = $183.19 354% of Godzilla = $169 192% of Pika = $104.9 Pennywise started strong and finished strong here in SLC. Comps are all over the board since I don't have any R-rated horrors to compare to, but the two that appear to make the most sense are OUATIH and oddly, Pika. I'll stick with an OW in the $95-100 range.
  8. In Salt Lake City It 2 was up 22% yesterday from Monday's cumulative and is running at a slightly faster pace today. It has now passed every other comp I have save for TLK. I haven't tracked daily moves before but given how high it was to start the week, those percentage moves seem pretty solid. The one outlier I have to my $90-100 OW forecast is Once Upon. That comp will probably wind up in the $68-72 range.
  9. Yeah, given that it's making its North American premiere at TIFF Monday night amid more hoopla and J. Phoenix's acting award, sometime between Tuesday and Friday of next week would seem like a good bet.
  10. Yep. Anything above 70 is going to be great for its box office prospects, IMO. There are probably a fair number of people who already know the story who were holding off buying tix until they saw the reviews. Bet we see a bigger than usual uptick in sales these next 24 hours.
  11. Pennywise interim report for Salt Lake, three days before previews. Sugarhouse Cinemark Luxury, six screenings, all 2D. 201 tickets sold, close to 50% of capacity, although more showtimes will undoubtedly be added. All comps are against the NEAR FINAL sales for preview night. 250% of Dark Phoenix = $82 mil OW 200% of Godzilla = $95.4 181% of John Wick = $102.8 49% of TLK = $95 272% of Hobbs and Shaw = $163 😂 Salt Lakers love their horror films it would seem. Even if IT didn't sell another ticket between now and Thursday, it would still be projecting an OW of $90-95 once you take H&S out of the equation. Will check back in on Thursday, but the clown is definitely smiling out here.
  12. Salt Lake City report for It 2, 12 days out, Sugarhouse Cinemark, 6 showtimes, all 2D. 104/463 22.5% 140% of Hobbs and Shaw, 94% of John Wick, and 103% of Godzilla just a few hours before previews. It 2 has exploded in SLC the past 48 hours. If this pace continues, it should easily surpass every other movie I've tracked this summer aside from TLK. (I didn't track Spidey because of the mid-week release date.)
  13. Oh man, you're right, I completely spaced on that. So it's not quite one for the record books. But after checking on the Friday pre-sales, I think the theater must be wondering why they did book it. 7 tickets sold out of 624 available.
  14. Scary, Dora, Rain, and Kitchen report for Salt Lake City. Cinemark Sugarhouse Luxury, all 2D, 3:00 PM local time. Scary 60/174 34.8% Dora 24/192 12.5% Rain 4/186 2.2% (not a typo) Kitchen 0/0 Scary is doing okay at 111% of Rocketman (= OW of $28.3) and 82% of Hobbs (= OW of $49.2 by that metric but only has 1/3 the available seats of Hobbs so it's max potential is actually just over $20)... the others are downright painful. Dora is 25% of SLOP (= OW of $11.6) and 10.7% of Aladdin (OW of $9.8), Rain is on life support, and Kitchen has already been transported to the morgue as it couldn't even get a screen at this benchmark Salt Lake theater, which is pretty much unheard of for a mainstream studio release. The dog days of summer, indeed. (Although you wouldn't know that by looking at Rain's totals. 😬)
  15. Hobbs and Shaw preview night report for Salt Lake City, 3:40 local time. Sugarhouse Luxury theater, 8 showtimes, all 2D. 7:00 PM 39/104 7:35 PM 3/48 8:00 PM 6/47 8:30 PM 6/62 9:40 PM 6/46 10:10 PM 14/104 10:40 0/48 11:10 0/47 Total 74/506 = 14.6% 92.5 % of Dark Phoenix = $30.3 OW 😲 66.6% of John Wick = $37.9 137% of Rocketman = $35.2 73.2% of KOTM= $35.02 F & F is more like The Slow and Somewhat Irritable in SLC. The comps on the face of it look absurd compared to what was expected, but it is what it is. Solid reviews should help motivate people on the fence, but man... not looking good right now.
  16. Theater I track was pretty optimistic for H & S, giving this eight screenings for preview night, but so far only 34 out of 504 seats sold. Looks sub $50 to me unless it really starts ramping up.
  17. Damnit, I thought I had a scoop! 😂 Life was easier when Pulse was still around.
  18. Tix are now on sale. Just picked up OW tickets through Cinemark in Salt Lake City.
  19. BREAKING: IT tickets are now on sale. Hadn't seen this posted elsewhere, so apologies if this is old news, but Cinemark in Salt Lake has them up for sale as of this evening and I'm assuming other locales do as well. This one is going to be fun to track! 😎
  20. One of my all-time favorite books. I hope the movie delivers.
  21. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood report for Salt Lake City. Sugarhouse Cinemark, seven showtimes, 4:40 local time. (I only have six of the seven because I didn't do my homework and realize there was a 4:00 PM showing, but the data will paint a clear picture even without that first screening.) 4:40 PM 40/47 6:45 PM 39/46 7:40 PM 59/65 8:15 PM 40/47 9:50 PM 4/48 (just added) 10:25 PM 20/45 Total 202/298 67.8% 108% of Detective Pika = $58.9 374% of Rocketman = $96.11 (!!) 200% of Godzilla = $95.6 (But a significant amount of Zilla's $ went to the surrounding IMAX screens.) 252% of Dark Phoenix = $66.25 Basically, Once Upon is KILLING IT here. I'm guessing there's a certain amount of front-loading with the Tarantino name, but that doesn't explain away what looks to be a massive break from the tracking numbers. I think $50 mil is the floor.
  22. I saw this yesterday and REALLY enjoyed it. I had never seen the original so I had nothing to compare it to, and maybe that was to my benefit, because I went in with only middling expectations, but man... I thought it was great. Clever, visually spectacular, catchy songs, and Will Smith ruled as the genie. Sure, it was often cheesy, and it loses some steam the last 15 or so minutes, but as a pure summertime popcorn flick, it can't be beat. Favorite scene? The one that reminded me of a certain magical sequence with Superman and Lois in Superman: The Movie, and those old enough to remember will know the one I'm talking about...
