Wish (2023) Spoiler Thread
Dingdong replied to Eric Atreides's topic in Review That Movie! (Spoilers Allowed)
I agree on the songs, well everyone just keeps saying to all the Disney musicals that the songs are boring or a step down from “Frozen” but the moment the songs blow up they shut up. The songs for me are on par with Encanto’s and Frozen 2, if I rank the musicals based solely on their songs: Frozen Encanto Frozen 2/Wish Moana Tangled -
Yeah I also think the lackluster opening came from the middling reviews and the animation style. I for one am not thoroughly enticed by the animation style Disney tried this time, and I wouldn’t doubt the general audience would really find it “cool”, cause it’s not. WDAS’s CGI style has been excellent ever since, so I’m not sure why did they have to mix it up this time. The ocean in Moana looks GORGEOUS, Encanto had this lush glow, etc.

Well, if Wish flops probably the only good this we’ll see is WDAS shying away to their formulaic musicals. Like I love all their musical films, but I’ve been dying to have a musical with a male protagonist. 90s had those with Aladdin, Hercules and The Lion King. It seems WDAS had greatly constricted their musicals as girl’s film of some sort?! And they’re diluting the market with their “princess”-like formulaic films. I know King of the Elves was something they were working on years ago, maybe a musical of that will work.

Wish (2023) Spoiler Thread

This was very good! At All Cost transported me and gave me chills, together with This Wish and Knowing What I Know Now. My only complaint was I’m a Star number was pretty generic, and the animation on that one was pretty clunky. But overall this is extremely great! -
This is purely fun and heartwarming, the songs were also great! The critics are just too brutal for whatever reason. if this came out ~2010 after Disney slump then this would be getting rave reviews. I don’t know what’s up with the critics. This Wish, At All Cost, Knowing What I Know Now are just epic!

I wouldn’t go that far…yet. Frozen literally had zero competion until February. Zootopia just resonated to kids and adults alike with its political and relevant theme whereas The Lion King is just a once in a lifetime phenomenon. This has Wonka and Migration pulling the family audience by December, plus Trolls is also there. But this definitely looks primed to succeed, hopefully.

They gotta extend this in theatres at this point, too much money left out if they won’t

Nah. Cinderella numbers is the ceiling for this one. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE knows Snow White story just like Cinderella. There’s no reason to really see the movie and see something new. But given all the controversies, this is really just a bomb

The Disney Thread | Iger will be with us until 2026

And it’s always a princess saving the company - Snow White, Cinderella, Ariel, Elsa. Let’s all hope Asha rescues the mouse house again. -
This is a bomb in the making. They just need to throw this to streaming at this point

Yeah I’m happy they’re positioning this as the next great disney animated event - similar to Frozen. I haven’t seen them this aggressive since 2013. Also, the early screening on Nov 18 screams confidence in Disney’s part in terms of the quality. And their animated tentpoles (The Lion King, Frozen, Pocahontas) all had early screenings which posted HUGE numbers. Hope this truly breaks out. This Wish is an impressive song!
-
You also do realize that there’s a reason why studios decide to spread out animated films throughout the year? Or CBM? Or whatever genre of films…it’s because they don’t want to compete their films with each other because of limited 1) Money 2) time 3) preference of the casual movie-goers. Casual families can go watch Disenchanted on black friday night instead of rushing to theatres when they see it’s available in D+. And who knows if they might have the luxury of time to watch another movie for the weekend. It’s a valid concern.

yeah box office grosses of already popular franchises have been stellar. And that’s why Strange World needs to be on theatres for a longer time - since original properties are in for the long haul and the trailer is truly terrific hopefully Disney ramps up the marketing so we can get a breakout hit!
-
I don’t think this is gonna bomb, but might rather underperform. Comparing these non-musical WDAS the past few years: Wreck-It Ralph: had the hook of of these already-popular video game characters Big Hero 6: Marvel superhero basis Zootopia: through-the-roof reviews + Sloth trailer at the same time, all the above movies had stellar marketing while Disney is dropping the ball in marketing this. And I don’t even know what’s up with that ugh. This is my primary concern tbh.
