The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread (December 2021 - July 2023)

Both Ambulance and The Bad Guys should've repositioned themselves into that mid/late-March period where hardly anything was coming out. Might not have completely turned around their financial prospects, but I suspect they would've done at least a little better. I worry they're about to get buried where they are now. -

Not defending Rock's joke in any way, but I don't think I can possibly disagree more with the idea that physical violence is ever OK in this sort of situation. Never feel it does anything to de-escalate, rather it does the opposite. -

Lol, Easter Sunday showtimes are going up for its current Aug 5 release date. Are they actually putting tickets on sale on Easter instead of... y'know... releasing it on Easter? -

There's an IMAX early access for FB3 on Apr 6, pretty early for one of those. Also an IMAX early access for Everything Everywhere on Mar 30 (after the limited opening, but a week-and-a-half before the nationwide rollout). -
Was just checking how I was doing. I'm not sure I'll land Jackass and Scream, but I'll enjoy my slim lead now while it lasts.

Eh, it's another one of Sony's pandemic-era Stage 6 dumps (similar to what they did for Long Weekend, The Last Shift, Mouthful of Air, etc.) They spend next-to-nothing on acquiring/producing and releasing them, and most haven't gone beyond 800-or-so theaters outside of Here Today (cracked 1k) and Broken Hearts Gallery (2k). Early in the pandemic, they seemed to be doing these releases as a courtesy to theaters by giving them something new to play. As business has since picked up, I'm not quite sure why they still do these.

I believe EC said the date for sales to begin on this one was March 28. -

Alright, I might be missing something, but as far as I can tell, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 will be the widest opening for an anime title since Pokémon 3 back in 2001 (booked at over 2.6k screens), and the first to open at 2.5k+ locations since then too, if BOP's location count estimate is correct. First to go over 2k on OW since Yu-Gi-Oh back in 2004 as well, yea? Again, I might've glanced over a title that came between. Demon Slayer eventually went over 2k, but not until week 3. -

That was more so due to the extreme dead zone that was late Aug/early Sep of 2014, which included one of the worst pre-COVID weekends in years over the Labor Day that The Identical opened (Classic movie for all the wrong reasons). Don't remember there being anything else for families out at the time, either. -

Important to remember just how poor the response to that 2014 Ninja Turtles movie was. A B CinemaScore for a big-budget tentpole like that was crazy bad. -

Not really expecting Sonic 2 to pick up until much later. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the first entry didn't start gaining momentum until rather close to release, as tends to be the case for most family titles. Morbius being over for now makes sense, it's closer to the release and targets the audience more likely to pre-order. I'm fully expecting Sonic 2 to have a larger OW and total than Morbius, by the way. Just saying it makes sense for pre-sales for Morbius to be higher at this current point. -
That's how it was promoted, but the concert was shown on a significant tape delay (by a few hours, based on Deadline), so it wasn't really "live", outside of getting to view it at the same time as all the other theater-going fans (even then, there were multiple showtimes, so not exactly completely simultaneous). I suppose given where the concert took place, this was about as good as could be done outside of having the concert in the very early morning in Seoul.

Also worth noting that they apparently paused all political donations in FL, including to any politicians who opposed the bill. -

HRC is also refusing the $5m donation Disney offered them today. Not looking good for Chapek. -

Chapek specifically mentioned theaters for Dr Strange and Thor. Said nothing about the release strategy for Lightyear. Might be telling. -

Heard March 14, same day as another April blockbuster. Got this from a friend on a Discord server that seems to have these dates right (or at least, they seem to line up with what EC mentions). Take their word on it or don't, I guess! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -

There’s an early access screening on the Wed before too. Gotta love preview number inflation (Prob just spreading the same audience out anyway, I’m sure, maybe?) -

Seems like Sonic 2 is the latest to have preview times start at 3pm on Thursday. -
On Wed? Post-holiday and post-discount Tuesday, if I had to assume. This was its first regular weekday.
