  1. Hmm? Prime absolutely has ads now. They rolled those out a month or 2 ago and force you to pay even more if you want to get rid of them.
  2. Really enjoyed this. After watching the movie all the hand wringing is kind of laughable because the movie is forcing certain audiences who had a narrative going in to try force their views onto a film that's about something else entirely and making them look foolish. It's hard not to get into depth about it without spoilers. But it's not the film you think it is, purposely toying with that while delivering something else and it's very well done 8/10
  3. I really enjoyed Civil War. I think what it's about might be surprising to those going in blind and expecting something different. Or for those hoping for commentary on modern politics. It does a lot of really interesting things playing with the audiences expectation while delivering a very well done character and profession study. It's much more about about the humanity of people than about a Civil War. The film is forcing certain viewers to try to force their own politics into it. Jesse Plemons is also a force of nature on the screen. Every time he shows up in a film no matter the size of the role it's like he magnetizes the viewers and you can feel the energy shift. 8/10
  4. I adored The First Omen. Who would ever guessed a prequel to The Omen would turn out this well. The acting is superb. The slow burn tension builds to crescendo. The framing of each shot is meticulous and brilliant. The use of sound and darkness was on another level. I really, really loved it and think any horror fan should be running out to see it to support it. I have the Scream Factory Omen Blu Ray Collection but don't think the franchise is anything special. I can't wait to own this, crossing my fingers for a 4K release. By far the best Omen film. 9/10
  5. I adored this film. It is so well crafted. The acting is brilliant and everyone is cast so well. The slow burn build of tension was expertly done. The framing of each shot was meticulous. The use of sound especially was executed to perfection. I am in love! This is the best Omen film easily for me. 9/10
  6. Monkey Man was surprising and caught me off guard. I was expecting a movie with great action and not much else. I walked out loving the characters, lore, story and everything that wasn't the action. And being let down by the action. I'm not saying the action was bad or anything like that, but I was really shocked by how much shakey cam, quick edits and bizzare framing choices were present. It took away from the stunts instead of enhancing them. The dramatic beats all worked for me and I think Dev has a great future behind the camera if he wants it. I wanted to be blown away but my thoughts are more that was a really solid first effort and I look forward to him growing and improving. 7/10
  7. Shocked how much I enjoyed GxK. It's funny, in theory I loved the approach of Godzilla 2014 and KOTM. And in theory I like this silly approach less. But in execution i couldn't stand those films and have really enjoyed everything with Kong that leaned on the silly side, with this one going full action figures smashed into eachother. I was so hyped for 2014. KOTM I was cautiously optimistic. And I hated both so much. Sure there are a handful of great scenes but the human characters just took up so much time and they were so poorly written and frankly I've seen dead moths with more screen presence than some of the performances. Looking at you ATJ. Movie was just a fun brisk time. It came under 2 hours and never dragged. The humans were minimized. Kong made me crack me up several times. It embraces the silliness and it worked so well for me. I still think Skull Island is the best but this was my 2nd favorite of the monsterverse. 7/10
  8. Thought this was solid but not great. It's tight and well paced and I had a good time with it. Had a couple of surprisingly violent scenes to the point I wish it went even further. But it's nothing you haven't seen before. It doesn't really do anything interesting or push boundaries. I thought the ending was fun but definitely nothing that will be talked about for a long time or anything like that. It's not going to be joining lists with the mist or something. Still, it didn't overstay it's welcome and it's well made and acted. It gave me a lot of giallo vibes at times with the way it was filmed and unfolded. Overall I did really enjoy my time with it. It wasn't the homerun I wanted but it was a good time. It was a 7/10 for me.
  9. Saw Immaculate. It's a tightly made, straight to the point horror thriller. Absolutely no fat on the film, just lean and well paced. It very much has giallo vibes to me, something like Don't Torture a duckling. Modern wise it also reminded a lot of a Cure For Wellness. I don't think it does anything extremely well, but it's fairly effective and well executed. It had some decent hyper violence, but honestly I wish it went even further than it did. All in all a decent time for a horror fan. 7/10
  10. Ghostbusters was surprisingly an okay time. I was expecting much worse but walked away liking it about the same as the last one. Which is to say, a flawed but enjoyable comfort food movie that won't leave any lasting impression but won't feel like you wasted your time. Overall, I did feel like the movie went on a bit long, there was 1 subplot I would have dropped entirely. It should have been an easy breezy 90-100 minutes but it drags on nearly 2 hours. Another rewrite with a touch more humour could have done wonders because the foundation isn't terrible. Not that the movie is going to surprise you in any way, it's just inline with all the Ghostbusters films outside of 1. Personally I don't think any of the films are bad. Just only 1 is great and the sequels don't add anything noteworthy. But it was fun to spend some time with the old characters again. Murray in particular though not a long role is very funny. 6/10
  11. Saw Migration. It was.....fine. Bland, inoffensive. Had a few smirks but didn't really make me laugh. Pretty bog standard animal animated movie that could have come out 20 years ago and nothing about it would be much different. The movie veering off into a whole plot about a chef was an odd choice. Other than finding that bit odd it didn't leave much of an impression. 6/10
  12. Just got out from Imaginary. Jeff Wadlow has the distinction of making what I consider the worst 2 films I've seen in theatre in the last 20 years with Truth or Dare and Fantasy Island. So my expectations were at that level. I walked away thinking he had made huge leaps and bounds as a filmmaker with this movie. Unfortunately leaps and bounds for him is still bad. But this was more generic and forgettable bad than how did this ever get made bad. It even had a story beat and a couple scares that genuinely surprised me. Still a hard avoid recommendation in theatre but I could see people checking it out on streaming and walking away thinking "well that wasn't the worst film I've ever seen." 3/10
  13. This was a huge step up for Wadlow from his previous blumhouse films. I went in expecting a 0/10 and came away thinking it's a 3/10. It has a couple story beats and scenes that surprised me in a good way. It's still bad, and forgettable. But i came away thinking that was a generic film with an okay concept that had some potential if a talented director had made it instead of thinking I have lost my faith in humanity that film was so bad like his last 2.
  14. Watching the film felt like the budget was half of that. It felt like an extended CW Pilot for a DC show.
  15. Gonna strongly disagree here. The movie was awful there is no doubt. Dakota was also awful in it. But trashing your in theatre film has always been a no no in Hollywood, especially if you aren't a huge name. Her "iconic tour" was her trashing the film. You need to wait a while before you start doing that.
  16. Yeah, not every movie is for everyone and I'll just accept that.
  17. I really tried to like these 2 Dune movies. I want to. But I just don't. I respect the craft and that's about it. The rest I just find so drab, bland and dull. I don't care about the characters. Timothee and Zendaya have absolutely 0 chemistry on screen and play more like siblings. I don't care about the story, or find it interesting. I don't even find it visually appealing because of the desert setting. I let myself buy into the hype for this one and I just walked out confused again. It felt like another part of a story. I thought it would be all the payoff from 1 and make me appreciate 1 more. But I walked out feeling like I got duped into watching a middle chapter. I kept waiting for these epic action scenes, or for Austin butler character to wow me like people were hyping up. And it just never happened. I ended up looking at those people like Stilgar with over the top glazing. I'm happy people are enjoying it but it's not for me.
  18. Yes, but physical media and pvod is nowhere close to what it used to be. Movies quickly go to streaming services which don't pay out like the peak DVD days did.
  19. Movies don't really make a shit ton on ancillaries anymore unless its on merch and that's usually kids movies specialty. Maybe I'm wrong but Dune merch doesn't seem all that big.
  20. Saw Madame Web. Truly one of the worst CBM in a long time. I don't think Dakota Johnson can act. The obvious ADR for the villain in every scene was hysterical. It truly felt like an extended pilot for a CW show. When the villains tech girl is helping him I was getting Deja Vu for CW shows. Absolutely comical that the suits were in it maybe 45 seconds. Teasing a film that Sony should have just made instead of this because those suits did look kinda nice. With the exception of Madame Webs suit whose glasses made her look a failed in ring manager for Macho Man Randy Savage. Night Swim, Argylle and this and it's only March. Some true dreck. 2/10
  21. One Love was okay. Pretty bog standard biopic with a good lead performance. Hits all the notes you expect but never rises above being a generic film. I can see why audiences would like it since it gives you exactly what you expect, and I can see why critics didn't care for it since it's just going through the motions as a film. I'm in the middle of those 2 ends. Probably not a film I'll ever revisit but I don't regret seeing it either. 6/10
