  1. Ghostbusters was surprisingly an okay time. I was expecting much worse but walked away liking it about the same as the last one. Which is to say, a flawed but enjoyable comfort food movie that won't leave any lasting impression but won't feel like you wasted your time. Overall, I did feel like the movie went on a bit long, there was 1 subplot I would have dropped entirely. It should have been an easy breezy 90-100 minutes but it drags on nearly 2 hours. Another rewrite with a touch more humour could have done wonders because the foundation isn't terrible. Not that the movie is going to surprise you in any way, it's just inline with all the Ghostbusters films outside of 1. Personally I don't think any of the films are bad. Just only 1 is great and the sequels don't add anything noteworthy. But it was fun to spend some time with the old characters again. Murray in particular though not a long role is very funny. 6/10
  2. Saw Migration. It was.....fine. Bland, inoffensive. Had a few smirks but didn't really make me laugh. Pretty bog standard animal animated movie that could have come out 20 years ago and nothing about it would be much different. The movie veering off into a whole plot about a chef was an odd choice. Other than finding that bit odd it didn't leave much of an impression. 6/10
  3. Just got out from Imaginary. Jeff Wadlow has the distinction of making what I consider the worst 2 films I've seen in theatre in the last 20 years with Truth or Dare and Fantasy Island. So my expectations were at that level. I walked away thinking he had made huge leaps and bounds as a filmmaker with this movie. Unfortunately leaps and bounds for him is still bad. But this was more generic and forgettable bad than how did this ever get made bad. It even had a story beat and a couple scares that genuinely surprised me. Still a hard avoid recommendation in theatre but I could see people checking it out on streaming and walking away thinking "well that wasn't the worst film I've ever seen." 3/10
  4. This was a huge step up for Wadlow from his previous blumhouse films. I went in expecting a 0/10 and came away thinking it's a 3/10. It has a couple story beats and scenes that surprised me in a good way. It's still bad, and forgettable. But i came away thinking that was a generic film with an okay concept that had some potential if a talented director had made it instead of thinking I have lost my faith in humanity that film was so bad like his last 2.
  5. Watching the film felt like the budget was half of that. It felt like an extended CW Pilot for a DC show.
  6. Gonna strongly disagree here. The movie was awful there is no doubt. Dakota was also awful in it. But trashing your in theatre film has always been a no no in Hollywood, especially if you aren't a huge name. Her "iconic tour" was her trashing the film. You need to wait a while before you start doing that.
  7. Yeah, not every movie is for everyone and I'll just accept that.
  8. I really tried to like these 2 Dune movies. I want to. But I just don't. I respect the craft and that's about it. The rest I just find so drab, bland and dull. I don't care about the characters. Timothee and Zendaya have absolutely 0 chemistry on screen and play more like siblings. I don't care about the story, or find it interesting. I don't even find it visually appealing because of the desert setting. I let myself buy into the hype for this one and I just walked out confused again. It felt like another part of a story. I thought it would be all the payoff from 1 and make me appreciate 1 more. But I walked out feeling like I got duped into watching a middle chapter. I kept waiting for these epic action scenes, or for Austin butler character to wow me like people were hyping up. And it just never happened. I ended up looking at those people like Stilgar with over the top glazing. I'm happy people are enjoying it but it's not for me.
  9. Yes, but physical media and pvod is nowhere close to what it used to be. Movies quickly go to streaming services which don't pay out like the peak DVD days did.
  10. Movies don't really make a shit ton on ancillaries anymore unless its on merch and that's usually kids movies specialty. Maybe I'm wrong but Dune merch doesn't seem all that big.
  11. Saw Madame Web. Truly one of the worst CBM in a long time. I don't think Dakota Johnson can act. The obvious ADR for the villain in every scene was hysterical. It truly felt like an extended pilot for a CW show. When the villains tech girl is helping him I was getting Deja Vu for CW shows. Absolutely comical that the suits were in it maybe 45 seconds. Teasing a film that Sony should have just made instead of this because those suits did look kinda nice. With the exception of Madame Webs suit whose glasses made her look a failed in ring manager for Macho Man Randy Savage. Night Swim, Argylle and this and it's only March. Some true dreck. 2/10
  12. One Love was okay. Pretty bog standard biopic with a good lead performance. Hits all the notes you expect but never rises above being a generic film. I can see why audiences would like it since it gives you exactly what you expect, and I can see why critics didn't care for it since it's just going through the motions as a film. I'm in the middle of those 2 ends. Probably not a film I'll ever revisit but I don't regret seeing it either. 6/10
  13. It's a really barren market place currently so everything is having decent drops for the most part. This has made about the same as Thanksgiving on a similar budget and that got a sequel, so I am sure they'll be happy to break even/make profit on home market. But I don't see a sequel coming with the reception it got.
  14. I'm going on Tuesday got my tickets already. Cineplex here in BC is doing a deal all month. Regular tickets are $5. Small popcorn $5. Specialty theatres are half price. Been the last 2 Tuesdays to take advantage and the theatre was very busy. Anyone But You was 3/4 full.
  15. Thought this was very charming and funny. Didn't reinvent the wheel, but it checked all the boxes and had two leads that nailed it and had amazing chemistry. In an era where getting rom coms is rare this felt like a home run just by being what people want from them on a basic level. 20 years ago this may have felt more "dime a dozen" but now felt refreshing and what audiences wanted. I had a great time with it. 7/10
  16. Watched Anyone But You. Really enjoyed it. Is it one of the great rom coms? No. But it is genuinely funny and charming. It felt like a real rom com again that checked all the boxes and did everything well. Leads had good chemistry. It was everything you are expecting for better or worse depending on how you view the genre. Had a real good time, and it's not surprising to see the movie doing so well from word of mouth. Hopefully we get a renaissance of the genre. 7/10
  17. Argylle was a complete mess. Rockwell is the only saving grace but he's not enough to carry it. The action scenes are just so over the top cheesey. Even though I felt each kingsman film was worst than the last, I still enjoyed the action in them and each one had at least 1 memorable action set piece. The 2 big ones here are memorable only in how God awful they are. That CG oil scene is going to haunt my nightmares. The twists every 5 minutes, twists that undo the last twists that comes off a twist that had undone the previous. It's like a Russian doll of twists each one dumber than the last. 3/10. As much as i hated it, it was still better than night swim.
  18. This was absolutely God awful. The first half is not good but it's not terrible, then the 2nd half goes insanely stupid. Rockwell does his best but he can't overcome the stupidity of the script and the terrible directing. The 2 big set piece action scenes in the 2nd half had me close to walking out. Vaughn seems to be getting worse with every film. 3/10
  19. Seeing Directed by Jeff Wadlow during the Imaginary trailer made me shudder. Truth or dare and fantasy island were so, so bad.
  20. Watched Maestro and I did not enjoy it at all. First miss of the best picture noms for me in my watches. It's well acted, well shot, well directed. It has some scenes I really liked. But none of the parts seemed to add up to anything coherent. It felt oddly cold, disjointed and messy. Scenes randomly stitched together. It seemed to want to be a biopic about the moments in between the big events but it just doesn't work. I walked away from the film feeling like I didn't know anything about the person, or why the person is important and what they accomplished. Every creative decision felt like it was made to appease award voters instead of strengthening the film. Carey really carried this film on its back and I kept thinking man I just wish the whole thing was about her and from her perspective. Bradley Cooper is talented behind the camera and I look forward to what he does next but this was just a huge miss for me even if I found a lot of it beautiful to look at. 5/10
  21. Seems like he will. Teaming up with Statham again. https://deadline.com/2024/01/jason-statham-david-ayer-sylvester-stallone-amazon-levons-trade-movie-deal-1235805593/
  22. Saw American Fiction and really liked it. Super funny and witty. This and Poor Things really surprised me just how funny they were. I've really enjoyed all the best film noms I've watched so far. Oppenheimer 10/10 Poor Things 9/10 Killers of The Flower Moon 9/10 American Fiction 8/10 The Holdovers 8/10 Hoping to watch Barbie, Maestro and Past lives this week.
  23. Isnt this just bonus money for Apple instead of throwing it straight on streaming? Give the movies a bit more prestige and awareness with box office not being a huge concern? Are they spending the money on marketing or is the distributor?
