oh come on... biggest missed opportunity of all time? Gimme a break.

Look at the cast of the three films, these should've been some of the most awesome and legendary action films of all time. Stallone even directed and wrote the first...and they're all pretty awful and dull except 2 which is decent at best.

  2. Saw this other day and found it pretty below average. It's not awful or anything, it hits its beats well enough but its the most generic CBM I've seen in years. Nothing remotely unique enough about it to stand out. Would've done fine in 2017/2018 when standards were lower and fatigue hadn't settled in yet but it's not a surprise why this floundered in 2023.

  3. The only guy who could've taken over for Miyazaki as the natural successor, Yoshifumi Kondō was literally worked to death. And they never found anyone else unfortunately. Nippon TV has at least been with Ghibli since the 80s so that's better than some new company with zero relationship to them taking over I guess.

I also wonder if Miyazaki not retiring is less so him making another film and more so writing a ton of scripts and sketching out concepts for future Ghibli films post passing,

Have seen none of his Shakespeare adaptations (the only films of his I can see liking more than this), but I would call this Branagh's best film Ive seen yet. Imo, the mystery itself is probably the most boring out of all 3 films, but the gothic horror touch is just exquisite. And formally, it's easily the best thing he's made this side of 2000.

I'd kill to see Branagh make an old dark house type horror movie.

    I'm back after a screening!

It was much better than Expendables 3, for sure. That I can say. The R rating really helps at all.

Stallone is barely in it ( he's out of the movie early on ). This starts as a Expendables movie, but turns into a Jason Stathan actioner ( which is perfectly fine in my book, given how I enjoy his movies ) right after. There's a twist about who the villain is.

It's ok. Maybe 6.5 / 7 out of 10, but I'm biased and enjoy that kind of flick. So, perhaps many won't like it.

Are Iko Uwais and Tony Jaa given a decent amount to do?

Leakers are claiming people  walked out of free test screenings

going to have a lot of egg on their faces if this movie ends up being even decently received

I was listening to the Empire Podcast interview with Chris McQuarrie and he even said they got walkouts at Dead Reckoning test screenings, it's not that out of the ordinary.

  7. Since everyone else is posting rankings:

    1. Porco Rosso
    2. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
    3. Spirited Away
    4. Ponyo
    5. Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro
    6. My Neighbor Totoro
    7. Princess Mononoke
    8. Kiki’s Delivery Service
    9. The Boy and the Heron
    10. The Wind Rises
    11. Castle in the Sky
    12. Howl’s Moving Castle

I love all of these except the last two, castles should NOT be moving!

I haven't seen any non Miyazaki Ghibli yet but I do plan to check some out soon!

Additionally, “The Boy/Girl and the (insert noun)” is an extremely effectively simple name template to target kids, which are crucial to any animated film doing much at the box office DOM

I agree but it's not really gonna appeal to kids at all. Not that it's graphic or inappropriate but they'll be bored and confused most likely. It's much more for older audiences.

Honestly I'd rather Penn be anti strike than say shit like this

He put it in the grossest, most extreme example possible but he's not wrong.

The invasion of privacy with AI deepfakes and body scans is extremely concerning and I don't think anyone's equipped yet for the legal/criminal/moral questions they're gonna be raising in the near future.

What he's talking about is already happening online with celebrities being deepfaked into pornography against their consent and knowledge, Penn's just asking execs how they'd like it to happen to them.

  10. This 20 second teaser has generated more positive buzz online than any of the god awful Flash trailers did (which we all had to hype regardless of what our eyes were seeing bc test screenings). I'm hoping reshoots didn't sand down an initial crazier cut (Wan did cite Planet of the Vampires as an inspo) and he can still deliver the goods.
