The man's a genius, he's opening up the Vin-verse for the ultimate crossover lol
(Vin please move on, stop delaying Riddick 4...I just want more Riddick).
-
I think 4 is still the most boring. Overly self serious and dour, still haven't figured out the formula yet (weird middle ground), not a single fun action setpiece. There's really nothing there even remotely memorable. Worst in the mainline series for sure.

Seems The Rock is back.
Vin won the feud.

Any word on when this is hitting Prime Video outside of the US?
No VOD options nor did it hit theatres internationally, not even Canada.
-
I think if the marketing had emphasized Gunn's "horribly beautiful mind", this would've opened above Vol. 2.

timothee jenner is kind of an auteur magnet which means he won't always be in hits but it's good for his long term career. i dunno where holland goes post spider-man. a lot of his other choices aren't great.
He's just picking the wrong types of films, dude should be in rom coms and musicals, not gritty dramas. He's been severely miscast in every non Spidey thing I've seen.

The scale of the film is small per blockbuster standards but it'll certainly be one of the most immersive spectacles of the year just for the IMAX nuclear stuff alone (the glimpses in the trailer always give me goosebumps). Giving me Twin Peaks The Return Part 8 vibes.

Was so busy last month, I barely watched anything.
Movies:
- Air - 7/10 Dad Core to the extreme
- Bound - 9/10 I'm a big Wachowski fan, but I'd love to see them return to small scale drama again.
- The Big Gundown - 9/10 One of Lee Van Cleef's best westerns.
- The Killers (1964) - 7/10 Worth it to see Ronald Reagan punched out by John Cassavettes and get shot by Lee Marvin.
- Dragons Forever - 10/10 A new fav Jackie Chan film up there with Police Story and Drunken Master II. Part martial arts Three Stooges, part action movie, part legal thriller, part screwball romantic comedy.
TV:
- Star Trek: Picard Season 3 - 9/10 (10/10 in my heart) Season 1 was terrible, Season 2 made the first look like a masterpiece in comparison. And then somehow they nailed the final season! Jettisoning off (and retconning) most of the dumb stuff from the first two seasons and bringing back the TNG crew to give them the proper send off they never got. Fan service heavy? Sure but it was well done and came from a place of sincere love for Trek. Best Star Trek in decades, moved me to tears on many occasions.

If you liked Five Easy Pieces, I'd recommend The Last Detail and King of Marvin Gardens, they're not on par but similar vein of lowkey 70s drama with Jack.

saw Five Easy Pieces the other day, which surprisingly links up pretty well with the episode on a thematic level lol. Really great character drama. Kind of wanna check out nicholson’s other low-key work soon.
saw dick tracy baked out of my mind and that shit rocked so much. Disney should do a nostalgia legacy sequel for that soon, bring beatty and the whole gang back - maybe dicaprio can play the new baddie.

It's the same?
Yeah, I'm glad I found out before I got my ticket. I saw Miyamoto in an interview talk about their role in making the Japanese script (and got hyped) but it was definitely overstated.
-
So, I've never seen any of the Hunger Games movies before but...this looks pretty good! I'm honestly intrigued and might have to catch up.

I think it'll stay around low 80s (i would be shocked if it ended in the 70s). I did notice more complaints than usual in the social media reactions BUT everyone saying them were still positive overall. So yeah I can see average rating being thrown a bit there.

Sam Worthington in part 1, Giovanni in part 2? Well that confirms it, Kevin Costner is an Avatar Stan.
Just HOW big is that Yellowstone clout to ensure back to back filming of 4 movies before the first has even performed? I can't wait for these

Special Japanese language screenings on April 28th. Yeah, they are starting to milk this movie. 😆
Nintendo personally oversaw the Japanese script, it's not a 1:1 translation. I haven't seen the movie yet and I'll go see this cut next week.
Edit: Nvm it's basically the same...no subtitles either.

Reviews are fairly positive but not glowing, have noticed a throughline of people saying it's an overstuffed mess. It just seems to hit more than it misses, and nails the emotional stuff. If it really is as sad and animal abuse filled as I've read, I'm VERY curious how audience WOM is.

not sure if the presales so far have painted a picture that bad
They've been quite poor, well below Ant Man 3.

No Peter Cullen for Prime is gonna be hard to get adjusted to

This looks really good!
Pro tip: never give Taika big bucks ever again.

This just shot up on my anticipated list, didn't realize it had been shot yet. I'm lukewarm at best on Godzilla 2014 and Rogue One but the man has an undeniable eye for visuals. Those films have a massive sense of scale and weight to it, that's very rare in a lot of big movies of its ilk. I just hope the script is up to par.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 | May 5, 2023 | The 9th most profitable film of 2023

They must've really felt bad for firing him and just let Gunn do whatever he wanted for this, huh? This and Vol 2 feel 100% like Gunn's movies, he's the only guy there whose been able to escape the studio machinations which even Raimi couldn't get out of.
It is very messy, and waaaay too long but its misshapen and strange in a way these movies are never allowed to be? It felt like an actual movie, very refreshing. I haven't been this baffled by a major CBM since like...BvS (for good and bad). But I was delighted by a lot of it too! And similar to John Wick 4, this felt like the director putting ALL their ideas into one last movie. So overflowing with stuff although this isn't as well paced. The constant stop start nature of the plot did have me feeling every minute of this runtime.
I liked it but it was a strange experience for sure, I def need to sleep on it. But I've gone from ambivalence for Superman: Legacy to genuine excitement, so that's something.
