  2. Last predictions before the fall fest run:

    Anora (NEON)

    Complete Unknown (SEARCHLIGHT)

    Conclave (FOCUS)

    Dune 2 (WB)

    Gladiator II (PARAMOUNT)

    Nickel Boys (MGM)

    Piano Lesson (NETFLIX)

    Real Pain (SEARCHLIGHT)

    Saturday Night (SONY)

    Sing Sing (A24)

    ------

    ALT:

Challengers (MGM/AMAZON)- didn't explode at box office, the studio will have Nickel Boys but should play well with the industry/guilds (WGA, ACE, etc)

Emilia Perez (NETFLIX)- reviews are all over the place but Cannes loved, could play well to international voters

    Joker 2 (WB)- again?

    NOT FEELING:

    Blitz (APPLE)

Queer- still no distributor, probably highbrow/sexually explicit

    -------

I'd predict Anora to win. It's already won the Palme with a jury including industry peers. It's Neon. It's a nice little underdog by an indie director that's never had an Academy breakout. It feels like one of the few true crowdpleasers this year that'll play broadly (should place top 3 at TIFF).

Sing Sing has made less than 1m and would need serious resurgence from A24 come fall after the festivals throw even more contenders into the mix.

Conclave feels something that peaks at Telluride and isn't exactly the type of bait that goes all the way anymore. I'd watch out for an acting win instead.

Nickel Boys is one to watch out for. The NYFF spot indicates strong prestige reviews and it's a powerful topic. But skipping TIFF implies it might lack broad accessibility, etc. MGM/Amazon isn't a great studio at this point, and it probably is devoid of high commercial prospects.

  7. 4 hours ago, Jake Gittes said:

Dune isn't getting nominated for acting and possibly not for writing (depending on the competition) so there's that. At the most I can see Villeneuve win director.

Austin Butler could get in Supporting.

But for the record, no I don't think it'll win. But I have it #1 just because it's the likeliest for a nom

Gun to my head, I'd say Anora wins

  8. Post Cannes predictions:

    1. Dune 2 (WB)

    2. Anora (NEON)

    3. Blitz (APPLE)

    4. Conclave (FOCUS)

    5. A Real Pain (SEARCHLIGHT)

    6. Sing Sing (A24)

    7. The Nickel Boys (AMAZON/MGM)

    8. The Piano Lesson (NETFLIX)

    9. Gladiator 2 (PARAMOUNT)- can Ridley strike gold once again?

    10. Queer (TBD)

    ALTERNATES:

Hard Truths (BLEECKER)- mediocre distributor/can Mike Leigh strike gold once again?

Here (SONY)- can Robert Zemeckis strike gold once again?

Joker 2 (WB)- can Todd Phillips strike lightning once again?

Juror No. 2 (WB)- can Clint strike gold once again?

    UNLIKELY:

-Challengers (AMAZON/MGM)- the box office didn't take off, will need to remain in conversation with critics/industry but might lack the passion, Luca has a more prestige picture releasing in the fall

  10. I haven't been active as much because, well....

It's been dire. Obviously finance does not equate quality, etc... but I'll never forget waking up on Avengers Saturday in 2012 and seeing the 80m+ opening day article on Deadline

Last year, we had a monumental box office event with Barbie and Oppenheimer. I don't even like Oppenheimer but Nolan the Box Office God achieving that feat felt like a true coronation. And of course Greta cementing herself officially as a Hollywood titan.

So it's sad when in the following months.. you see the likes of Scorsese or Gosling underwhelm. It's most disappointing especially when non-IPs centered around women, people of color, etc aren't getting the attention and business they deserve. It makes me feel like the activity of movie-going is completely faded.

I think Bad Boys will do ok since it serves a minority audience, ditto Twisters. I really like the first 2 Deadpools but I'm reluctant about Wolverine.

  11. Anora wins the Palme

It's Neon's 5th winner in a row (Anatomy of a Fall, Triangle of Sadness, Titane, Parasite). 4/5 were BP nominees.

Between the seeming accessibility of the film, the international passion and Sean Baker's industry cache, I think this will be his Academy breakthrough

The late 70s/early 80s are now far enough in the past that making a project set during that era will naturally be expensive, especially if we're talking any part of the entertainment industry. One day it's going to cost a pretty penny to recreate the 2010s.

But also as @Cmasterclay pointed out, the sets also mean recreating concerts where you'll have to pay and costume hundreds (thousands?) of extras unless you go the Bohemian Rhapsody route and create a mostly CGI audience. That's naturally going to balloon the budget a bit.

Iron Claw takes place beginning in the 70s with an actual A-list actor and features crowd scenes yet cost under 20million

Elvis reportedly cost 85m with Tom Hanks and during the pandemic

  20. i know this is tracking thread and i hate when people on twitter who have like 12 dollars in their bank account and will spend at least 8 of it on a starbucks drink discuss movie economics..... but.. 70 million for Bob Marley seems crazy

And even if it overperforms tracking which seems likely for the initial opening, at least... that budget is tough to recover
