Idk, but the market feels empty without a Marvel movie these days

It's a byproduct of the new environment we're heading into. A marketplace where wealth is a lot more evenly distributed, instead of one megafranchise hoarding all the money. There will be growing pains in the transition though. And one of those is pop culture discussion being more mellow and reserved than it was under Marvel's glory days, wherr everyone and their mother was talking about them.

Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire MTC1

    Previews(T-1) - 85565/646340 1580924.03 3534 shows +16410

    Friday - 102461/1097919 1804552.17 6145 shows +21727

Strong day for sure. 4x from T-1 PS takes it to ~150K and 5x to ~165k ish finish. ~8-9m previews is in play.

Friday should hit 160k ish by tomorrow night and hit 320-350K finish. High end could take it to 25m True Friday and 75m+ OW as @M37 had predicted yesterday. I think even @charlie Jatinder post about beating Dune 2 OW is in play.

Well, let's just hope the critics give this good scores once the embargo lifts today, because those will decide if it scores a $75M+ launch or if it opens in the low-$60M range. There's no novelty factor to protect it, so the Tomato will decide its fate.

By my count GB should be $16.9-17M SAT but if Sony sticks to $16M FRI est, it should be $17.5M SAT. With that, it may hit $45M+.

I'm shocked it's set to do that well to be honest. Between Afterlife coming and going without much of a trace, the mediocre presales and the poor reviews, this was poised to be this year's Shazam 2. That it managed to overcome those suggests that maybe there is still a future for this franchise. This one will likely be less profitable than Afterlife since it has lesser word of mouth and a bigger budget, so another live action movie might not be certain, but at least that animated movie in the works could do fairly well if it's any good.

Ive already planned 5 viewings for GxK (i hope it will be more), but what annoys me greatly is that i wont have a chance to see it on OW because of other appointments. Earliest i will be able to see it is on April 2nd ☹️

The 5th for me, since our distributor delayed it to avoid Ramadan. I can't say I blame them though, since John Wick 4's total admissions were marred by it, and Mario did pretty poorly here because of it, to the point where it ended up falling behind Sonic 2 by around 10% here.

The original Ghostbusters is lame and not funny. The sequel was equally bad. Afterlife was awful. The 2016 film is the only one that’s any good.

The weird cult following that 2016 reboot has on here, and almost nowhere else, will always perplex me a little. It also makes me take the disdain people here have for the franchise less seriously. I am not looking forward to this weekend's thread at all.

The reviews were never going to deter me from seeing it in a theater, but I agree with everyone else now finally and say that those undecided parties are going to hold off on buying a ticket for this.

I'm among them. I have no attachment towards the brand at all, and was waiting on reviews to decide if I want to see this or not. Now I know to save my money for the far better movie out the week after.

I don't have a problem with The Boy and Heron winning. It just bugs me that all of a sudden there is this weird backlash when it comes to Spiderverse when just 9 months ago everybody loved it for the most part. But then I guess that should not surprise me around this place.

Those worker abuse headlines making the rounds a few weeks after the movie's release soured people, at least here, on it, and might've even cost it the Oscar. Phil Lord's tantrums on Twitter aren't helping either. People being over superheroes in general might be another factor that gave Heron the edge.

That's so disappointing for Dune 2. Great for Panda 4, but I just wish it wasn't eating into Dune's lunch.

    2 years to go!!

I want to be excited for this, but after how hollow and dull the first movie was, I don't really feel anything. They'll create another 90-minute key jingling session and it'll still make more than all three Sonic movies combined even if it pulls a King of the Monsters and drops off a lot because of the lack of novelty, because there's no justice in this world.

  9. That's a fantastic result for Panda, and the opening weekend will be double what most, including I, expected. And no one had it on their radar, nor were they hyped for it. Those of you underestimating Ghostbusters 4 and Godzilla x Kong should keep this in mind going forward. You never know!

Dune 2's Friday wasn't as glorious as I wanted, which is an indication Panda 4 might be eating into it to an extent. Hopefully it scores a big increase during the rest of the weekend and at least gets to the mid-$40Ms range.

Is Dreamworks Animation looking at KFP4 as their first potential $200M+ DOM-blockbuster in 12 years since “Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted” back in 2012?

Considering there’s no other big animated film for a while until The Garfield Movie in May. So there’s nothing much else for the animation fans and families in over two months.

That's honestly depressing, and further punctuates how far DreamWorks has fallen in the years since. The constant flops and shakeups and Comcast merger just sucked their soul out. And Comcast has been mostly neglecting them in favour of their golden boy. As much as the Panda 4 previews don't impress me at all, I hope this success motivates Comcast to finally start showing their stepchild some much-needed attention.

  10. Voldy's implying Thursday could actually increase from Wednesday, which sounds kind of insane.

On a related note, is anyone else having this urge to see the movie again this weekend? I usually don't rewatch movies in theaters, but Dune 2 was such a spectacular experience that I want to do it again one more time before it inevitably leaves the bigger auditoriums. I'm thinking about seeing the movie again tomorrow after my anatomy course ends. It's not like I have anything else going on that day. I wanted to see The Holdovers as it's out tomorrow here, but it's unsurprisingly not playing in my area, so Dune 2 it likely is.

  11. This looks amazing. The difference between Kung Fu Panda 4 and this is night and day.

I also wonder if Dean DeBlois's executive producer credit here is an indication that he was originally at least co-directing this with Sanders before he went off to do the Dragons live action remake for the main Universal studio.

Also, this movie is the end of an era in a way, as it'll be the last DreamWorks movie to be animated fully in-house in Glendale. You'd think Puss 2 being a surprise hit would motivate Universal to invest some actual money into the studio, but I guess not. Sad.

If this thing has an 8 in front of it’s number for the weekend, WB and Legendary will do what they did last time and announce Messiah this week.

I don't know, with Denis saying a bunch of times that he'd want to do something else first before finishing his Dune story, it might be a while before we hear official word on Messiah. Dune 2 got off the ground as quickly as it did thanks to Denis originally planning to shoot both it and the first movie together, and presumably already having a script, or at least something close to one, ready to go. Also, that first movie was bringing in impressive amounts of international revenue for almost a month by the time it opened in the US, so the studios had plenty of time to make the final decision. Messiah will most likely be made, there's little doubt about it at this point, but I think it's another 4-5 years off.

He really wasn't in this one though. A very subdued performance form him. Not sure if it's because of VIlleneuve's direction or because Walken is getting up in years (correct me if I'm wrong but I haven's seen him in anything in quite a while).

Yeah, I was honestly pretty disappointed in his role here. That's the one sore spot of this movie for me. But even that is smothered out by there still being plenty of villanous energy going around in some other key characters.

  14. Much better previews than expected. I really hope the weekend is just as fruitful. This is, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the best movies I've ever seen. Nearly 3 hours of cinematic perfection. The direction, the story, the acting, the score and the special effects are all spectacular. This is what cinema should be. It takes an already great story started in the first movie and elevates it to pure art.

I think when reviews hit people got their hopes up Dune would be an Oppenheimer type blow up but it's not really shaping that way so far, so they can't appreciate that this is still basically locked for a substantial jump from the first movie. Messiah is all but officially happening, so all this is absolutely a win.

I think this movie will be a good barometer to show how much Oppenheimer would've made without the viral Barbie connection and especially in a world without TikTok.
