  1. After how badly The Marvels performed I doubt the final X-Men reboot is going to end up female-centric anyway, so there's no point wasting time on that rumour.
  2. The big difference between the two is their overseas revenue. Domestically the second movie finished neck and neck with the first, but the overseas revenue took a pretty big dip for obvious reasons. Honestly, for a sequel to a film that wasn't very well received and was artifically propped up by the goodwill of Infinity War, that's not a bad result in the slightest. The studios behind Ninja Turtles 2 and Alice 2 would kill for a result like that.
  3. A final middle finger from Mr. Wan to the studio that gave him the worst time of his career since Furious 7 if rumours are to be believed. I couldn't think of a more poetic ending even if I tried.
  4. I'd add Aquaman 1, Shazam 1, the Snyder Cut and The Suicide Squad to that list. Only 5 truly great movies out of 12 (I have no plans to touch the original Suicide Squad and Josstice League, and Aquaman 2 is not out here at the time of writing) is not a good run to say the least. The Snyder Cut was the perfect sendoff to this franchise for me, and everything afterwards feels like expensive fanfiction to me. I wonder if anyone else feels this way.
  5. It was already shaping up to be a major hit at least on opening day. The positive reviews and Fresh Tomato just sealed the deal on it winning the month in the US.
  6. I was really hoping the movie would miraculously turn out good, but alas, it wasn't meant to be. Again, I hope Wan burning out here doesn't result in a Hobbit moment and sours him on filmmaking.
  7. Purely anectodal, but here at my big chain mall theater it has sold a whopping 7 tickets across 5 shows on opening day that are on sale right now. And all 7 of those are for the 10 PM show. This result is atrocious for a superhero tentpole 3 days out, as there are usually a decent amount of seats in the middle sold out by then, as I remember the case being for The Batman here.
  8. This is a very good start for the weekdays, but the drop not being all that far off the infamously frontloaded Last Jedi does leave me concerned.
  9. A fitting end for one of the biggest jobbers this franchise has ever seen. The decision to have him get beaten by Ant-Man and his army of ants pretty much killed him as a big bad. No one is going to ever take him seriously after that. And with Loki's ending leaving them with a convenient out, I'll join the camp who wants Kang gone entirely and Avengers 5 to be something else. Maybe a fight between the main world and the Illuminati world ending with Loki Who Remains rebooting everything and taking on the Beyonder role in Secret Wars, assuming that still gets made after all this. Hopefully James Gunn and his team are paying very close attention and taking plenty of notes so that their franchise never suffers a downfall like Marvel has.
  10. I still think Colour Purple will win over Wonka and the month overall, as from what I've gleamed the subject matter for the former seems like it'd be more well-suited to be a breakout in America over a Willy Wonka prequel movie. Overseas is going to be a different story though, as black movies have generally struggled internationally relative to how they perform in America. And how many foreigners know what Colour Purple is? I didn't until Warner initially announced this musical remake back in 2020.
  11. Racebaiting over a movie most have already forgotten about is just pathetic. Wonka is a whimsical family-friendly December musical with good word of mouth, whereas The Marvels was a poorly-received entry in a tired old franchise riddled with baggage. The former also cost half, maybe even less than that, as much as the latter to make.
  12. To clarify, I think of Josstice League as the killing blow to this franchise. But to answer your question, I think Aquaman 2 fits that bill a lot better, because at least Warner tried to hype up The Flash as best as they could considering how rough the movie ultimately was. Much like Dark Phoenix before it, Aquaman 2 is being sent out to die with subpar marketing. Warner's not even trying and not taking any more risks considering the franchise has been bleeding money for years at this point.
  13. Funnily enough their gender is listed as male. Anyway, I've noticed they're stanning movies starring black actors or actors of color, so maybe they're rooting for them to succeed over their competition and coming off as a tad overexcited in the process? I'm not sure.
  14. Damn, Rebel Moon and Aquaman 2 really are being released on the same day. It will be ironic to see Zack attempt to launch a new franchise on the same day his first one gives out its last breath. While I love his Justice League cut, and he ultimately wasn't the one to kill the DCEU, it was his questionable decisions made on both Man of Steel and especially Batman v Superman that got that franchise into the mess it remained in until the bitter end.
  15. There is a really compelling movie about Barry fighting his demons and coming to terms with his mother's death in there, but unfortunately the movie looks atrocious, is too distracted with a bland multiverse story, and utterly collapses with one of the worst third acts I've ever seen on film. Even the first Wonder Woman movie's final battle looks like the Snyder Cut's when compared to what The Flash offers. Anyway, I'm disappointed Wonka didn't hit $40M in the end, but this is still a good number overall. I don't see another Jumanji or Greatest Showman in it like so many do, but it's more than enough of a good movie to hit at least $160M or so. If The Colour Purple wasn't shaping up to be a breakout in America $200M would be a decent possibility. Thankfully it's been doing very well overseas so that should make up for any potential domestic shortcomings.
  16. They've all had major appearances as part of the old universe this year, so they're probably waiting for Aquaman 2 to leave theaters in order to start new work on those characters.
  17. I'm pleasantly surprised at Wonka's Friday and how much it went up from early estimates. It should have no trouble getting to a $40M opening and around $165M total stateside, if not even $200M depending on how it fares against The Colour Purple.
  18. @Brainbug So I've finally caught up with Monarch, and yeah, episodes 4 and 5 really are that bad. The 50s storyline is gone, and in its place we have more infuriating drama with the Randa kids. Some of the most boring television I've watched in a while. Both Goji and Monarch feel like afterthoughts in a series that was marketed around them. I'd forgive that if the main kids were compelling, but they just aren't. The ladies especially are pretty unlikable and rather one-note. Thankfully Episode 6 is a major turnaround, and might be my favourite so far. The 50s storyline returns in full force and is as great as ever. And even the modern-day portion is far better than in previous episodes, mostly because the annoying kids are an afterthought while Kurt Russell takes charge, and there's just far more suspense and excitement here. It definitely restored a lot of the interest I had lost. Hopefully this momentum continues to the finish line.
  19. The main difference here is that there's a big Superman reboot on the way the year after Creature Commandos. There are also a new Batman movie and a Green Lantern television series in active development. Unlike the previous regime this one is clearly committing to building a foundation with the classic heroes.
  20. Eh, I'd like to be proven wrong and go see Little Timmy kick everyone's ass, and it's not a far fetched possibility to see that happen. But I wasn't here for the likes of The Greatest Showman and Jumanji, and admittedly nearly every musical either underperforming or outright bombing during my time on this forum and more closely looking at the box office has tainted my view. So my opinion is pretty amateurish. As I said earlier in the thread, it's a really great movie and I'm rooting for it to make lots of money.
