I don’t think he should remain CEO. He’s just not the guy. I think the reigns will be handed over sooner or later. Maybe someone like Staggs or Mayer returns, heck even Rice himself, Sarandos. Perhaps even Walden, Daniel, or D’Amarro will get a very quick ascent to the top.

in fact I actually don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility that privately the board has told him he’s not returning. He answers to the the chairman at the end of the day.  I think it’s possible the Board wants Dana Walden as the next CEO and that Rice needed to go for her pathway to be clear.
Walden and Rice had been together for a very long time. To see that she’s inheriting his position and not leaving with him is surprising to me. I think she’s the best bet for who Chapek is replaced by.

The problem I have with the succession plan is they had very few options when Iger left, pretty much Chapek or Mayer in the end. No one at Disney and certainly no one outside the company has the right experience to be a great CEO right off the bat in my opinion, we could get another Iger surprise (he did much much better than expected when he first got the job) but that seems unlikely. Problem is no one knows the Parks well enough while having the Hollywood relationship side of things as well, it is either one or the other. I could see a Co-CEO thing happening with a Media/Parks split or make it a prerequisite that Walden or whoever familiarise themselves with the Parks. There really isn't an easy great choice for CEO when the 2 most important aspects of the company are Streaming and Parks, Kareem is probably the person with the most overlap of those 2 segments but he seems like Chapek's closest ally (although that does mirror Iger/Eisner) but again don't know how good Kareem is at playing The Hollywood relationship game.

Anyway as far as the Rice firing I think it does have to do with them fearing losing Walden, in which case they may have made the right choice (although handled the dismissal poorly) but we will find out for sure in the coming weeks.

Going straight to Disney+ in France: https://deadline.com/2022/06/disney-french-windows-strange-world-bypass-theatrical-disney-plus-1235040493/

Around the time of Turning Red's shift to Disney+, a lot of people were expecting Strange World to get a similar treatment as well. Looks like those predictions did come to pass, albeit only in France for now.

Posted in the France international thread quoting myself and this has been in the works for 9 months+, when Disney refused to sign the new windowing deal that pretty much confirmed their intent they were just waiting for the right film to test this on.

MCU, Star Wars, Avatar 2 will almost certainly remain theatrical in France everything else from November onward will be questionable. Of course if Disney can come to an agreement on a shorter more favourable window this all may be mute but that seems unlikely to happen before this film is released if at all.

Several sources say the studio is mulling skipping the theatrical release altogether in France and releasing straight on streaming platform Disney Plus in order to avoid being subjected to the local windowing release schedule.

    Pretty sure they're bluffing

Nope, no bluffing first film is going to be Strange World which will skip cinemas in France while it is released in the rest of the world.

Dissatisfied with not being able to release them on its Disney+ platform until 17 months after their theatrical release and having to remove them from its online service temporarily when they are broadcast on free-to-air channels such as TF1 and M6, the Disney giant has decided to release his next animated film “Strange World” directly on Disney+ and skip the big screen. And this, only in France, yet one of the countries with the highest density of cinemas in the world!

"It is the consequence of the "media chronology" as practiced in France that we consider unfair, restrictive and unsuited to the expectations of our audiences," said Hélène Etzi, President France of Disney.

  4. Not as great as the last episode but still really good.

Moses Ingram especially was fantastic in it.

    She was fantastic indeed.

    Spoiler

Her interaction with Leia was great, as was her brief interaction with Vader in person.

The Jedi catacombs scene was all kinds of messed up, particularly when they showed the youngling.

This is going to sound like a really weird and strange thing to say, but I'm new to the Box Office game.

Is Universal in a really bad state (especially if Jurassic underperforms)

The 355, Marry Me, Ambulance, Firestarter have all bombed.

    Could they be in trouble?

As a company they are not in trouble, they are owned by Comcast so have plenty of money for now to function. If Comcast decides to sell or spinoff NBCUniversal I'm sure there will be plenty of bidders for their Theme Park division alone.

From Box Office/film business standpoint they have not been doing as well as they did in 2015 but their studio division has still been profitable, although somewhat challenged through COVID, they have 2 big Pay 1 deals with Amazon and Netflix as well as with their own streamer Peacock that makes their films money, they make money on PVOD and other EST, money from physical media etc all on top of whatever box office they make. Even if JW3 has a disappointing run it will likely be profitable or that very least close to breakeven from theatrical alone and then all those other revenue streams kick in as well.

  6. Running Man boost for Lightyear?

In all seriousness, this is the first time I can remember a Hollywood movie being promoted at the beginning of a Running Man episode, Disney is clearly spending some marketing $$$ or I guess more accurately

  7. I don't know why it always devolves into streaming vs. theatrical, the studios are obviously going to want both revenue streams.

If you ask a studio if they would rather $5-10B at the studio with an operating margin of 30% or $10-20B from streaming with an operating margin of 20% they would most likely respond

Both Is Good The Road To El Dorado GIF

That is a possible outcome for 3 of the studios within the next few years.

Also the studios have, for the most part, never been producing more than they are right now. Streaming and TV have really opened up more opportunities.

As for the 45 day window, it has an impact but not a major one for most films although Top Gun Maverick does seem to be super leggy so it for sure would be more impacted by the 45 day window than say The Batman and DS2.

Off topic - but it looks like due to Hollywood’s new windowing, as well as there being less films coming out, for the month of June there’s only 3 NEW major studio films being released for legal home viewing: “Downton Abbey”, “Doctor Strange”, and “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent”. I don’t think it’s ever been so dry.

That is what you think until JW3 opens under $50m and gets the 17 day window!

That was Oblivion, which I just watched tonight and which surprisingly, he carries really well again.  Not as good as Top Gun Maverick, but it's as good as it can be b/c Cruise is in it...it's again almost a single lead movie and I liked it - B+/B - just too much plot to go higher...

They didn't mean going to space in the movie, but actually filming in Space.

Shondaland's first show for Netflix is their highest watched English language show with a huge margin, with Season 2 outdoing Season 1, and Inventing Anna was No. 1 on the streaming charts for weeks too. Her results so far are much better than Abrams', especially if you go by the reported deals of 100M vs. Abrams' 250M.

She doesn't have the volume of shows though and whilst she has performed the best of the Netflix mega deals she got 1 mega hit and 1 hit ( if I'm being generous and including Inventing Anna in the original period ... which means you may as well include Westworld for JJ) out of what seems to have been a 4 year deal, the rest were misses. Also that $100m is probably a lot higher now that they expanded those terms after, as I mentioned, her multi-year presumably finished last year.

  12. Also having a very small presence on social media continues to be a blessing. As you both point it it is so easy to explain the actions of the characters, people just need to have some patience.

Then again there are Star Wars "fans" out there who hate a character due to her skin colour, so maybe I'm expecting too much of some people.

  13. Spoiler

Bro, they doing Vader so well. Holy shit this is HYPE.

The confrontation between Obi-wan and Anakin, this is what I want.

    edit:

    Spoiler

Vader burning Obi-wan damn, he's been wanting to that for a while I bet.

Reva at the end being scary as shit with Leia, this episode makes the first 2 look bad ... and those first two episodes were great and I love them.

Please please please can the next 3 episodes be this good 🤞It might reach ESB levels for me if that is the case!

    Oh OK.

Anyways Universal is taking down videos of Jurassic World Dominion, still few remains but good to see that they are taking action.

Remember same thing happened with Endgame if I recall correctly (maybe it wasn't videos but major plot points came out somehow) and it still went on to make an insane amount of money.

JW3 just needs good word of mouth, which we will see how Korea reacts in the coming days, should find out within a few days.
