Having seen the movie, I am now less hopeful on the winning odd of the movie. Not the movie isn't great, it is just too abstract and artsy. It is a movie that you have to understand its metaphors for it to be great. The only way Heron can win this category is blocking members of non-animation branch from voting at all, which isn't happening.

On the other hand, Hisaishi' score is fantastic although is more minimalist this round.  I actually prefer this over Oppenheimer' score.

This soundtrack keeps dancing in my head

The holiday effect already started this week, with many movies holding very well. It'll be even stronger starting this weekend and the next two weeks, with more schools off and Christmas/New Year's coming up. The Boy and the Heron is going to lose a number of theaters this weekend, so its holiday boost may be limited. It'll lose theaters on Friday and then lose some more on Monday because of all the new releases. My two closest theaters are already dropping it :(

I hope we can still see some decent holds, though. At least we have some nice dailies this week.

Hope it can maintain at least 1000 locations during the holiday period.... currently is 2300

If The Boy and the Heron does gross this much in China, it would definitely make it a profitable film, even though we don't know the budget. It was the most expensive film produced in Japan. It has already made about 120 million so far. Although, Suzuki said it had already made a profit back when it had only grossed 56 million dollars.

The most expensive film produced in Japan can be in the range around 6B yen (when they said this, they mentioned the previous most expensive film produced in Japan was 5B yen).

    56M dollars = 8B yen

This film didn't get much marketing in Japan so saying it started to get profit with 8B yen does make sense.

Currently, the film has 115M dollars worldwide =16.5B yen

Not including China, it is expected to finish around 140M-150M dollars = 20B+ yen

Beautifully Animated, but a bit disappointing. The Story and Narrative were all over the place. They were spraying bullets with Storm Trooper precision.

I think Miyazaki intentionally did that.

I mean the old man already made many crowd pleasure films before, he knows the formula.

So this time, he would not accidently do that unless it has a I purpose....

Unlikely Miyazaki would take issue with Oppenheimer. The people in Japan who raised a fuss about it are generally not the same kind of people Miyazaki would align himself with, if anything many of them probably have their gripes with Miyazaki, too. If Miyazaki wanted to boycott America again, it'd be for actual geopolitical reasons.

Short of that, dunno if he'll attend the Oscars anyways, though, since he's been pretty reclusive.

Hope Joe Haisashi will be more active for the Oscar's best score ..... In my dream, I wish he could get that Oscar, his whole carrer has not been regconized by the Western Awards.
