  1. Maybe a combo of both? It did open in new territories this weekend - France, Belgium, Germany, Turkey. It doesn't have any new territories so next week's hold will be telling.
  2. A24 promoted the hell out of CW and did it smartly. Their ad on the new Roadhouse was genius. When you clicked play, the trailer played with a message about how you're getting this movie ad-free thanks to CW, and that's the only ad you'll get. Which is weird cuz if you have Prime you don't get any ads, but they twisted it into, thanks to A24's CW, you get to watch this movie add-free, after this trailer. They must have paid a sweet penny for that.
  3. Civil War is a 2/5 movie whose reviews are bolstered by the A24 logo. It's meant to be super thought-provoking but you walk out going, "ok yeah sure, but what's for dinner?" But it's not actively bad or boring so it may have decent legs.
  4. Weren't there tons of tweets saying this is the most intense movie of all time and your heart will stop and you haven't seen anything like it, it's like actually being dropped in the middle of a civil war but even more intense? My TL was bombarded with those reactions. What happened? Everyone is now disappointed and it gets a B-?
  5. Gaga hasn't proven that she is a $20M-a-role movie star yet. A Star is Born was bigger than anyone excepted and despite mixed reviews and adult movies flopping during the pandemic, she drew people to House of Gucci. But 2 movies isn't enough to justify $20M. That $12M sounds about right.
  6. Blockbuster cinema is dead. So a tentpole that looks, feels and sounds like cinema will be seen as try-hard by many people in 2024. That's not what they're used to.
  7. There's also something that feels forced about her encountering yet another crazy killer after X...this time bc it's 80s LA, it's the Night Stalker. And the whole "I wanna be a star!" thing was done to perfection in Pearl and feels repetitive here. So it's taking an element out of X and and element out of Pearl and combining them but to what looks like diminishing returns. But I hope it's great.
  8. Perri has abysmal taste and while I appreciate her positivity towards the genre, usually just gives all horror movies a 4 or 4.5.
  9. I loved X and adored Pearl but this trailer....didn't really do it for me.
