Finally saw it and man I love it. I've been hyped for this project for 4 years since the moment Halle's casting was announced and I actually expected it to be a normal mix-reviewed Disney remake I would end up liking anyway because I just have these rosy eyes for Halle. But the actual quality of the movie exceeds my expectation and I think it is no doubt the best live adaptation. Besides Halle's star-making turn, what I love most is all the small changes and details they add to the love story, which make the development of the relationship more convincing and more "modern". Eric is FINE as hell on the big screen and the promotion materials really do dirty to the chemistry-Ariel and Eric got the best chemistry in any princess live adaptations and every moment they share on screen I have a big grin on my face. I teared up 4 or 5 times throughout the movie and I'm a 25 yo male lol. The movie does have its problems for example the CGI looks off in some underwater scenes and the pacing could've been better but these are all minor aspects. I had a really great time watching this movie and I left the theater with a full heart. And the more I think about how a movie with such a moving story and kindness receives so much hate the more upset I get. I really hope Halle won't be affected by the naysayers and enjoy the success of the movie because it's her movie and her moment.

still, this is already the mildest criticism of the casting and Halle Bailey herself. The rest are just plain racism-they even make a lot of humiliating names for Halle's Ariel and use the n-word freely. They even attack people who went to see the movie and gave positive reviews online, calling them "brave" and "hero" and "not afraid of hurting your eyes"

on China's social media, I've seen countless arguments like this: "I'm fine with their political correctness attempts and casting a black actress but why couldn't they at least pick someone more beautiful for example, Halle Berry?" Well first most Chinese don't know many black actresses so they just throw some big names like Berry without knowing that she is probably too old for Ariel and could not sing; second, I think this type of argument just scream (hidden) racism because you can clearly tell that they automatically believe that a light-skinned or a "whiter" black woman is more attractive.

the "silent majority" are the ones who pay to see movies in the theater. no matter how loud those annoying racists scream and bomb and make a big fuss out of everything on social media, they don't matter at the end of the day. unfortunately, not many overseas markets have this kind of filtered audience score system and a lot of general movie-goers may be scared away by the bombed score even if they may actually end up liking the movie.
