  1. Gran Turismo is not going past $5 million in China. There is simply no interest whatsoever for it.
  2. This movie is likely going to end up as the biggest movie of the year in China in 2023 due to everything going on in the world lately.
  3. Post Truth numbers have been underwhelming. I was hoping it would at least beat Suzume but it seems that is not to be. They should have just went with the original 31 Dec release date and leave things to chance.
  4. Changed my mind again, Post Truth should comfortably beat out Suzume for the king of March crown. Suzume ran out of steam way too quick. Hopefully, Post Truth can make it to $100 million.
  5. Suzume should take the number 1 spot in March…comfortably. I was way wrong to put Post Truth above the Japanese anime. Anyway i hope this encourages Chinese studios to bring out local anime to compete with ones from Japan.
  6. it’ll be interesting to see how “Born to Fly” fares in theatres. Given everything that’s going on today, it’s probably going to end up as the highest grossing movie of the year in China.
  7. im a bit curious to see how Super Mario will do since mainland China never went through the whole video game console craze due to the government’s console ban in 2000. Nintendo Switch only started selling in 2019 through Tencent so not holding much hope for nostalgia. PC games pretty much have the market all to themselves.
  8. It’s going to take some time for China to overtake Japan on the international market. China is too reliant on Sun Wukong, Nezha, White/Green Snake etc. There isn’t that much diversity outside of these mythical characters as compared with Japanese anime movies. I also feel Japanese anime will continue to have an advantage over their Chinese counterparts as they aren’t afraid to incorporate a bit of Western influence into their films.
  9. Five Hundred Miles may have fared better if they didn’t insist on releasing on CNY. Way too much competition. If Post Truth only manages to make $60 million, especially given how everything is back to normal in China, then that would truly be a failure. Anyway, we should know soon who the winner for month of March is soon enough.
  10. Suzume? Though it will likely receive a positive reception from the Chinese audience, I personally don’t see this anime beating out Post Truth. Im predicting Post Truth will make at least 4X the total China box office revenue of Suzume. Despite the fact Revival tv drama being widely popular in mainland China, i still think Post Truth will come out on top when the two go head to head next month. The former is primarily targeted towards a more mature and serious audience whilst the latter is a light hearted comedy intended for the whole family.
  11. Of all the movies releasing in China this March, both foreign and domestic, “Post Truth” looks set to come out on top. I dunno how both Mario and Shazam will do but im not expecting much from either of them.
  12. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on were you stand), Marvel is going to end up as an unintended casualty of the escalating geopolitical tensions between the US and China. As things worsen between the two powers, nationalism on both sides is only going to go from strength to strength. “Made in China” products were once frowned upon in China but now are seen as something like a badge of honor especially amongst the younger generation. China box office is slowly reflecting that.
  13. that’s the thing, there won’t be any huge voids to exploit for the next year or two. A ton of domestic movies were delayed due to Covid and many are now scrambling to get slots. The director of TWE2 even touched upon that in a recent interview and this was one of the reasons they decided to go with the CNY date despite Covid concerns.
