  1. I still think peoples expectations are being coloured by low expectations. It seems to be performing in the range you would expect if we hadn’t had the Ant Man debacle. anyway Reddit posts are always funny to see. Some people don’t understand data.
  2. Just back from watching it. This is not a dark film, mental that critics would claim that. Only negative is what I think most felt - Gamora had no real place in the film, she would have been better left dead honestly.
  3. I don't really agree on the novelty factor. Enough other franchises don't act that way - its far from HP/JP in terms of concept. If Chadwick had survived to film it I think its bigger purely because its probably fun - the wom I've heard was awful, they just got too much inside their own thoughts (understandable) and forgot to make a fun CB movie.
  4. I think people are putting their own feelings onto kids. If BP was the new SW for a new generation it wouldn’t have dropped for BP2. I just wish the film that spoke so strongly to black Americans wasn’t a film whose underlying message seems to be “wow an Africa with skyscrapers!” as if there are not modern successful cities in Africa. Only the nation which hid in a bubble is a successful African country with a modern society. Still enjoy the film but the message taken in America is fairly ignorant.
  5. This constant lamenting on the second film as if it was not well received is really boring. I get people have personal views but it was very well received at the time and a big success.
  6. I don't see how it doesn't impact on the Saturday. Families will absolutely watch the crowning with their kids and probably have a mini party. Not everyones cup of tea but I imagine schools are all doing things in primary classes around it this week.
  7. Yeah I don't see the point in pretending its not been coming in low; if it can rebound thats a great result driven by reviews. Its poor initial performance has to be seen as things outside of the film itself (i.e. a Marvel 'cool off').
  8. I mean this ignores a lot. He got two As from a pretty obscure brand already with Guardians. Even Stevie S had a C+ with the A.I. monstrosity. TSS had a lost against it; I don't think its fair to treat any of the pandemic films as a benchmark. And yes this includes the Cinema Score because it changed who was going to the cinema. EDIT: Also TSS does have a solid RT verified score so it feels pointless to argue it was somehow poorly received.
  9. Not sure if you're half joking or not but I completely agree with the statement. It probably needs that and maybe its just not hitting that audience.
  10. From the reviews its dark but still action packed. The reason I never saw WF was it seemed it was a door two acts before any action in the third act. Seemed very self indulgent (a lot of MCU seems this way right now).
  11. I kind of want to prod Guardians with a stick at this point. Maybe Disney just don't have the modern reach to build hype? Maybe just been too long since the last and MCU just isn't growing so no matter what it does it drops.
  12. Seems it’s just the Mantis thing but honestly that’s in GotG2 as sub text so not sure why it’s made such a thing by the reviewer, maybe to trick me to watch another hour!
  13. Wait. The Special is a need to watch? Just heard it in a review. I thought that was Christmas fun? Marvel needs to stop doing this.
  14. This is 100% the case; end of the day reviewers will look for something a bit different. Its also possible Marvel staff are fatigues/out of some of the ideas that were popular. I still think NEW Gamora was a mistake, we are basically getting a third film about their relation - thats not great when we should be seeing character growth. Reviews seem in the OK range which for me if people were holding out for a review bump to tracking thats not coming but I still hope fans of the films run it up a bit late but thats only a hope.
  15. Have noticed this. Marvel fans suddenly love Quill hitting Thanos because Gunn said he wouldn’t do it. Is funny to see. It’s not like Guardians does not have some serious dark moments. The first film is them all as criminals - including murderers - and the second has Gamora/Nebula have literally been captured and tortured. That’s their entire relationship. Resolving that. Thanos literally murders half the universe including half our hero’s. Guardians has always been about damaged people going on adventures. Why it works over other superhero films is they don’t undercut the emotional moments with quips - the jokes are the characters being themselves so it goes along with the motions quite well. I don’t see how anyone can be looking at the reviews and be hitting panic buttons.
  16. The animal cruelty nonsense must be trolls. Some of the biggest grossing films reflects animals in captivity/being harmed. Anyway no red lights in these reviews. I don’t think these make any real difference compared to final reviews (especially after the nonsense over the years and the awful way Twitter reviews are written) but hopefully a good RT result. Will it make a difference? Not sure but hopefully a sign of good WoM after release and maybe some legs even if the opening is weak.
  17. People keep saying its about the superhero genre but if Guardians struggle its wider than that. Its really not a 'superhero' film in how most would think of them.
  18. Tbf that can be worse than being tired of them. Was a few complaints about little they were in that so people might be less hyped over marketing. Doubt it but it has been part of the wider Marvel problem and negative responses.
  19. D&D also couldn’t maintain its legs and historically we can probably apply that to Guardians, could that change? Sure but it’s nonsense to come into this thread and suggest people are talking DP numbers.
  20. Really good clip. They should have marketed this from this way day one. Hardcore fans know the film is about Rockets past but do the GA who love Guardians know? Unlikely. Good side of a bit of a change I think.
  21. All for it being R rated. Comic films have trended older for quite some time so at least this helps differentiate it from the very crowded space.
  22. When it comes to Disney+ vs theatre strategy I think it’s best just to accept Disney threw IP at the Disney + wall without much additional thought.
  23. GOTG had a massive budget and introduced the wider family of Thanos. Marvel absolutely wanted it to be a box office hit. Was it a risk? Absolutely. But it’s budget shows they wanted it to break out. I do agree you don’t know what will connect with audiences all the time but also that seems like a problem for the MCU. It’s as likely none of them connect as all of them connect. Which is a problem when it comes to allocating the monies.
