Most people online seem to like the trailer, I personally thought it looked incredibly uninspired, but either way I'm still sceptical that this will translate into audience interest. The cast is just rough, full of side characters from unremarkable movies and shows that people didn't give a shit about.

I don't think taking Joker to Venice was a bad idea since those international critics liked the first way more than american critics did. They were the group of people that were supposed to be kindest towards this movie. So these mixed reviews might actually be sugarcoating how bad the reception will end up being, we'll have to see.

A sequel to Joker sounded aggressively stupid creatively from the start, even before choosing to hard pivot it into some silly musical hybrid. You needed someone a lot more competent than Todd Phillips in order to pull it off. I am surprised it's struggling with pre-sales right out of the gate though, I thought it would at least have a strong OW.

This is so depressing. Furiosa's one of the best action movies we've gotten in the past decade, and it'd be a shame if the series dies here due to lack of audience support.

It's the Apple grey area of not knowing how much they expected to make giving two veteran directors such abnormally large budgets. It's not a double standard if the context of the release is completely different.

Yes people are overreacting, I find the complaining about budgets as if they are the main problem with Hollywood odd. In Disney and DC's case, most of their flops would lose money even if the budget was cut in half, because there was just zero interest from the getgo. The key to making flops like Indiana Jones, The Marvels and Aquaman successful would just be to simply not make it. As for cases like Mission: Impossible and Fast X, we know for certain those are down to strict COVID protocols, so the complaining as if it isn't an isolated incident outside of the studio's control is again, really weird.

You're right although FNAF being successful and thus a long running franchise is more valuable to theatres in the long run.

Superhero movies are becoming more and more uncool to general audiences with each passing day, I wouldn't be surprised if Aquaman 2 would've done sizably better if it released at the start of the year compared to the end, as this year has done so much damage to the genre.

What an abysmal past two months for the box office this has been. FNAF being the shittiest movie I've seen all year whilst also being one of the biggest post-summer hits, if not the biggest, is just the cherry on top.

I agree that Black Panther 3 will be less successful than 2 but that has nothing to do with whether 2 was successful, and no making $850M off a $250M budget is not meh. If people here felt the movie was boring and underwhelming then just say that, because I'm sorry these arguments are beyond forced.

The Marvels being significantly hurt by the strike would make more sense if pre-sales started well and tapered off over time, but they were abysmal from day 1. Nobody was even considering giving this movie a chance, it's the definition of DOA.

Not sure what MS do with Brie's existing contract. Captain Marvel is a dead brand, they would've had a leg to stand on if this was well received but sub-300M + B range cinemascore means there's pretty much nothing they can do to save it, the few mega-fans who gave this film a chance and disliked it will not be back for a sequel.

Even if you removed all critics with active hate toward the project, the rest of the world just... doesn't care about this film. And the reviews were last minute. That was the writing on the wall.
And Disney/Marvel knows this, hence the most active promotion for this movie being on platforms they're in control of.
People were saying that critics would be overly nice to this film just because culture war, but I never bought that.

Also, type of reviews and WOM matters as well. if it's basically more of the same (not perfect but fun, blast, stay for credits, charm, heart) even interested parties could delay the viewing cause it doesn't scream must-see. You need Avatar-like WOM (Holy shit I've never seen anything like this before) to pull a miracle and get disinterested interested.
I mean reviews and WOM definitely did help D&D, it was tracking to do much worse than it actually did.

The "hacked to pieces in the editing room" criticisms are an awful sign since it's part of why reviews for BvS, Suicide Squad and Justice League were so bad.

Love and Thunder reviews were mid, the "its legitimately bad" consensus I feel only became a thing well after it came out, but it wasn't really reflected in critic or social media reactions.

Guardians of the Galaxy had a better hook imo. It was the first MCU movie set primarily off of Earth and (at the time) felt like a breath of fresh air. Most of the Thunderbolts cast are just super soldiers or glorified spies, and the trailer has done nothing to make it seem like an essential MCU entry. Unless it randomly turns out to be one of the best MCU movies, this just looks like the definition of skippable filler.
