  1. #40 To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995) - Directed By Beeban Kidron 224 Points | 7 Lists "When a gay man has way too much fashion sense for one gender he is a drag queen." Top 5 placements: 1 Top 10 placements: 3 Country of Origin: USA Language: English. Awards: 2 Golden Globe nominations Box Office: $47.8m Availability: Rent on Prime Video, AppleTV, Google Play. Genre: Comedy | Drama Reviews: Rotten Tomatoes: 45% METACRITIC: 60 LETERBOXD: 3.8 out of 5 IMDB: 6.7 out of 10 That there’s still a need for candy-movies like "To Wong Foo" isn’t really the movie’s fault. It seeks only to entertain, and tangentially to enlighten.-Rob Gonsalves. Rob's Movie Vault About the film: To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar is a 1995 American road comedy film directed by Beeban Kidron and starring Wesley Snipes, Patrick Swayze, and John Leguizamo as three New York City drag queens who embark on a road trip. Its title refers to an iconic autographed photo of Julie Newmar that they carry with them on their journey. Newmar additionally appears in the film as herself. What I know About the film: To Wong Foo, is an ok film, it's fine, it's funny at times, it's also basically an american remake of the Australian film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. which is superior in almost every way. So this films existence a mere one year latter is a bit.. bizarre. but it happens all time time I guess. this is definitely one of the higher ranking films to actually have a mixed critically reception. maybe the highest? audiences seem to like it better though. Like I said this movie is ok. it's mildly entertaining and of course Patrick Swayze looks good in drag. because well he looks good in anything. but yeah this isn't one of my favorites Notable feats: The film was released on September 8, 1995, and was in the number 1 spot in the North American box office for two weeks with a worldwide gross of $47.8 million. Critical response was mixed, with particular criticism towards the plot and its familiar elements, but the performances of Swayze, Snipes, and Leguizamo were lauded. Swayze and Leguizamo both earned Golden Globe Award nominations as Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, respectively.
  2. #41 The Color Purple (1985) - Directed By Steven Spielberg 212 Points | 5 Lists "Oh, my God, do you guys remember straight people?" #1 placements: 1 Top 10 Placements: 2 Country of Origin: USA Language: English. Awards: Nominated for 11 Oscars Including best picture. and pretty much everything else, it sadly didn't win any. Box Office: $98.5m Availability: Rent on Prime Video, AppleTV, Google Play. Genre: Drama Reviews: Rotten Tomatoes: 73% METACRITIC: 78 LETERBOXD: 3.9 out of 5 IMDB: 7.7 out of 10 I anxiously awaited the coming of this movie. Last week I saw it, and I was not disappointed. Indeed, when it concluded, I stood up and cheered. -Dorothy Gilliam. Washington Post. About the film: The Color Purple is a 1985 American epic coming-of-age period drama film directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Menno Meyjes, based on the Pulitzer Prize–winning 1982 novel of the same name by Alice Walker. It was Spielberg's eighth film as a director, and marked a turning point in his career, as it was a departure from the summer blockbusters for which he had become known. It was also the first feature film directed by Spielberg for which John Williams did not compose the music, instead featuring a score by Quincy Jones, who also produced. The cast stars Whoopi Goldberg in her breakthrough role, with Danny Glover, Oprah Winfrey (in her film debut), Margaret Avery, Rae Dawn Chong, Willard Pugh, and Adolph Caesar. Filmed in Anson and Union counties in North Carolina, the film tells the story of a young African-American girl named Celie Harris and shows the problems African-American women experienced during the early 20th century, including domestic violence, incest, child sexual abuse, poverty, racism, and sexism. What I know about the film: I saw this movie quite a few years ago with my mom, it was good I liked it, it was really interesting to see African american culture, post slavery time, and see how they were affected by prejudice, even when they basically lived in their own sub-culture. it had some really hard, emotional parts, a bit hard to watch but effective. I do think this movie was a bit long and slightly boring at parts. I feel that way about a lot of Spielberg movies though. I actually had a gig for a while as a stage hand and I would set up and tar down sets for plays. the hours were crazy but I kind of loved it. and I remember one of the last ones I did was for a play of the color purple. which I actually got to watch and that was pretty cool. Notable feats: The film was a box office success, grossing $98.4 million against a budget of $15 million. The film received acclaim from critics, with particular praise going to its acting (especially Goldberg's performance), direction, screenplay, musical score, and production values. However, it was also criticized by some for being "over-sentimental" and "stereotypical", and was boycotted by some chapters of the NAACP for its depiction of rape. Nonetheless, the film was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actress for Goldberg, Best Supporting Actress for both Avery and Winfrey, and Best Adapted Screenplay, but did not achieve a single win. It also received four Golden Globe Award nominations, with Goldberg winning Best Actress in a Drama. Spielberg received a Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement, and a Golden Globe nomination. In 2006, the American Film Institute ranked the film 51st on its list of most inspiring movies.
  3. #42 Bros (2022) - Directed By Nicholas Stoller 219 Points | 4 Lists "Oh, my God, do you guys remember straight people?" Top 5 placements: 1 Top 10 Placements: 1 Country of Origin: USA Language: English. Awards: Nominated for best comedy (Critics Choice award). Box Office: $14.8m Availability: Rent on Prime Video, AppleTV, Google Play. Genre: Romance | Comedy Reviews: Rotten Tomatoes: 88% METACRITIC: 72 LETERBOXD: 3.1 out of 5 IMDB: 6.4 out of 10 It’s a proper, laugh-out-loud comedy which have you gasping for breath one minute and hands clapped over your mouth the next – yes, they went there.-Wenlei Ma, New.com.au About the film: Bros is a 2022 American romantic comedy film starring Billy Eichner and Luke Macfarlane as two gay men in Manhattan who avoid commitment but are drawn to each other. The film is directed by Nicholas Stoller based on a screenplay he co-wrote with Eichner and is produced by Stoller, Judd Apatow, and Josh Church. Produced under Universal Pictures on a budget of $22 million, it is one of the first gay romantic comedies by a major studio and has an openly LGBT principal cast. What I know about the film: This movie is only a year old, so I remember a lot about it's release and seeing it. it was distributed by Universal, and stars a pretty much all openly LGBT cast. and it advertised the heck out of the fact that it was the first to do so. and honestly I think this movie is sadly imo mostly famous for how badly this bombed at the box office, but, I think people are tired of "the first" angle as far as advertising though. we have 100s of LBGT films at this point, and dozens with major studios and A-list actors in them, some of the members of the LGBT community themselves. and yes it's great that this movie was made almost exclusively by the LGBT community. but at this point in time it's more like a fun fact. not a history changing statement that is gonna make millions of people see it. So yeah this movie came out and bombed hard only making $11.6m domestically total. which sadly is less then I was hoping it would make in it's opening weekend. let alone total. but it was also advsetised as a romantic comedy. they just don't do very well anymore sadly. in fact had this same movie been released 10 or so years ago it probably would have made over $50m. never the less I still was super excited to see it, it got solid reviews from critics so I drove to a late night showing and was the only person in the theater. I still loved it, it was funny like super funny imo, there were so many jokes that I feel like you would only get if you were gay and it just spoke to me, is this movie perfect? no. is it a bit cheesy? yes, absolutely its a romantic comedy, I'd be disappointed if it wasn't. was it a bit heavy handed at parts and all "brought to you by the democratic party and the PRIDE flag" yes and that part did bug me a bit. but only a bit. I know some people have issues with this movie, but I just really really liked it a lot. I just remember feeling very happy when I got out of that screening. but sad that so few people didn't seem to care to see it, wish it would have broke more into the mainstream awareness, it's a great movie. Notable Feats: Bros had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 9, 2022. Universal spent between $30 million and $40 million marketing the film and commercially released it in theaters in the United States on September 30, 2022. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, but it bombed at the box office, grossing $14.8 million worldwide against a production budget of $22 million.
  4. #43 The Wedding Banquet (1993) - Directed By Ang Lee 216 Points | 5 Lists "You're witnessing the results of 5,000 years of sexual repression" Top 10 placements: 1 Country of Origin: Taiwan, USA Language: Chinese, English. Awards: Nominated for best Foreign film at the Oscars, as well as best foreign film at the Golden Globes. Box Office: $1.2m Availability: Watch on Tubi, Pluto TV, Rent on Prime Video, AppleTV, Google Play. Genre: Drama | Romance | Comedy Reviews: Rotten Tomatoes: 97% METACRITIC: N/A LETERBOXD: 3.8 out of 5 IMDB: 7.6 out of 10 This tale of a marriage of convenience charms and amuses with strong comedic performances with a great script and some beautifully shot sequences.- Colette Maude, Empire Magazine About the Film: The Wedding Banquet is a 1993 romantic comedy film directed, produced and co-written by Ang Lee. The story concerns a gay Taiwanese immigrant man (played by Winston Chao, in his film debut) who marries a mainland Chinese woman (May Chin) to placate his parents (Gua Ah-leh and Lung Sihung) and get her a green card. His plan backfires when his parents arrive in the United States to plan his wedding banquet and he has to hide the truth of his gay partner (Mitchell Lichtenstein). It was a co-production of Lee's Good Machine production company, and the Taiwanese Central Motion Picture Corporation. What I know about the film: I saw The Wedding Banquet several years ago, long after I had seen "Brokeback" and it was years before I even knew that he directed another "gay" romance film, although instead of being about gay cowboys. it's interracial city boys living in New York, and while this does go into the prejudices and persecution of being gay. it does so in alot more "comedic take" and it's kind of a breath of fresh air. this movie may not be as hauntingly beautiful or poetic as Brokeback. but it's a very well made, funny, engaging film. and I truly enjoyed it. although I enjoy almost everything Ang Lee does. (except for that awful "Hulk" movie.) definitely need to check it out if you have not. Notable Feats: Lee's second feature film and his first to get a theatrical release in the United States, The Wedding Banquet premiered at the 43rd Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Golden Bear. It was both a critical and commercial success, becoming the most profitable film of 1993[4] and won five Golden Horse Awards, including Best Film and Best Director. It received Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for Best Foreign-Language Film, as well as six Independent Spirit Award nominations.
  5. #44 The Way He Looks (2014) - Directed By Daniel Ribeiro 216 Points | 4 Lists Karina: We're going to see the sunset. Leonardo: Speak for yourself. I'm not gonna see anything. Top 10 placements: 2 Country of Origin: Brazil Language: Portuguese Awards: Won the Teddy Award for best LGBT feature. Box Office: $1.2m Availability: Rent on Prime Video, AppleTV, Google Play. Genre: Drama | Romance Reviews: Rotten Tomatoes: 93% METACRITIC: 71 LETERBOXD: 3.9 out of 5 IMDB: 7.9 out of 10 "This exquisite film - about a blind teenager who falls in love with a classmate - will charm you from beginning to end."-David Lewis San Francisco Chronicle. About the Film: The Way He Looks (Portuguese: Hoje Eu Quero Voltar Sozinho, lit. 'Today I Want to Go Back Alone') is a 2014 Brazilian coming-of-age romantic drama film written and directed by Daniel Ribeiro, based on his 2010 short film I Don't Want to Go Back Alone (Eu Não Quero Voltar Sozinho). The film stars Ghilherme Lobo, Fábio Audi, and Tess Amorim, reprising their roles from the short. What I Know about the film: I watched this movie shortly after it was released and when I saw it, it was my favorite LGBT romance film of all time, Loved it, it's a simple story about a blind teenager who falls in love for the first time, but it's very well made and acted and very sweet. It's probably not my favorite LGBT romance of all time anymore. but it's a really great film that everyone needs to check out. Notable Feats: The Way He Looks premiered in the Panorama section of the 64th Berlin International Film Festival in February 2014. It was released theatrically in Brazil on 10 April 2014. The film was met with positive reviews from critics and audiences; both groups praised Lobo, Audi, and Amorim's performances, Kerchove's cinematography, the soundtrack, and Ribeiro's direction. It ranked as the 5th most viewed film in the country on its first day of release. The film won two awards at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival; the FIPRESCI Prize for best feature film in the Panorama section and the Teddy Award for best LGBT-themed feature. It was selected as the Brazilian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards, but was not nominated.
  6. #45 Milk (2008) - Directed By Gus Van Sant 211 Points | 11 Lists "All men are created equal. No matter how hard you try, you can never erase those words." Top 10 placements: 1 Country of Origin: USA Language: English Awards: N/A Box Office: $54.6m Availability: Paramount+ | Rent on Prime Video, AppleTV, Google Play. Genre: Drama | History Reviews: Rotten Tomatoes: 93% METACRITIC: 83 LETERBOXD: 3.8 out of 5 IMDB: 7.5 out of 10 "Penn is so well-tuned that not for a minute does his Milk lapse into a caricature." - Namrata Joshi, Outlook About the Film: Milk is a 2008 American biographical film based on the life of gay rights activist and politician Harvey Milk, who was the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California, as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Directed by Gus Van Sant and written by Dustin Lance Black, the film stars Sean Penn as Milk, Josh Brolin as Dan White, a city supervisor, and Victor Garber as San Francisco Mayor George Moscone. What I Know about the film: I saw Milk, quite a few years ago, I remember thinking it was a pretty powerful film and Harvey Milk was pretty inspiring, the very first openly gay elected official is a pretty big deal, and that went a long way for LGBT rights and spotlight. very well made film as well with a great performance from Sean Penn. It's also has a great supporting cast with Diego Luna and James Fanco Standing out. Notable Feats: Attempts to put Milk's life to film followed a 1984 documentary of his life and the aftermath of his assassination, titled The Times of Harvey Milk, which was loosely based upon Randy Shilts's 1982 biography, The Mayor of Castro Street (the film won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for 1984, and was awarded Special Jury Prize at the first Sundance Film Festival, among other awards). Various scripts were considered in the early 1990s, but projects fell through for different reasons, until 2007. Much of Milk was filmed on Castro Street and other locations in San Francisco, including Milk's former storefront, Castro Camera. The film was released to critical acclaim and grossed $54 million worldwide. It earned numerous accolades from film critics and guilds for Penn's and Brolin's performances, Van Sant's directing, and Black's screenplay, it received 8 Oscar nominations at the 81st Academy Awards, including Best Picture and went on to win two: Best Actor for Penn, his second Oscar, and Best Original Screenplay for Black. Note: Milk is the first film in the top 100 to receive more 200 points, ranking at #45 means 45 films received over 200 points
  7. HONORABLE MENTIONS PART 3 #106 Longtime Companion (1989) 93 Points | 4 lists This movie is not very easy to find, it was released in 1989. it deals with the horrific AIDS epidemic of the 1980s, through the viewpoint of a group of gay friends. I did have to pleasure of watching this movie, I had to buy one of the last copies available on Amazon. because of it's subject matter this is not a very easy watch, if there is a subgenre I put off watching more than any it's any that have to deal with AIDS. it is just so freaking sad. and honestly kind of scary because it's a real thing that happened and still affects the world today. But this is a pretty good and very sad little movie. #105 Johnny Guitar (1954) 94 Points | 2 Lists Johnny Guitar is a 1954 American western Western film directed by Nicholas Ray and starring Joan Crawford, Sterling Hayden, Mercedes McCambridge, Ernest Borgnine and Scott Brady. While not explicitly a queer film, the film is considered ahead of it's time for portraying a strong female lead who took on the rule of what was considered the "man's part" I haven't seen the film myself so I can't say to what extent this is a LGBT film, but it's shows up on letterboxd's "Pride: A Chronological History of Queer Interest & LGBTQ+ Cinema" film list so it must be at least somewhat significant, the film definitely peaks my interest so i will have to check it out.
  8. #46 Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958) - Directed By Richard Brooks 199 Points | 6 Lists "Well the Truth is as Dirty as lie!" Top 10 Placements: 1 Country of Origin: USA Language: English Awards: Nominated for 6 Oscars, including Best Picture, best actor (Paul Newman) Actress (Elizabeth Taylor), Director (Richard Brooks), adapted Screenplay and Cinematogphy. 3 BAFTA Noms and 2 Golden Globe Noms, Best Picture and Best director) Box Office: $7.7m Availability: | Rent on Prime Video, AppleTV, Google Play. Genre: Drama Reviews: Rotten Tomatoes: 97% METACRITIC: 84 LETERBOXD: 3.9 out of 5 IMDB: 7.9 out of 10 About the Film: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is a 1958 American drama film directed by Richard Brooks, who co-wrote the screenplay with James Poe, based on the 1955 Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name by Tennessee Williams. The film stars Elizabeth Taylor, Paul Newman, Burl Ives, Jack Carson, and Judith Anderson. What I know About the Film: A couple of years ago I had only seen about 1 or 2 Paul Newman movies ever, and like 1 one of them was Cars, and then I started watching old movies and ended up watching a few of his movies, and he ended up becoming one of my favorite actors, of his time at least, and he has the most insane blue yes I had ever seen. anyways I had heard That the film Cat on a Hot Tin Roof had queer subtext in it, what I didn't know that the play it was based on, portrays Brick Pollitt, Paul Newman's character as a explicitly homosexual man, well a closeted one at least, the writers of the film screenplay (or government censorship forced them to) did their best cover this up, but it's such a central plot of the story it doesn't even make since unless you believe he is gay, so if you view it that way this film that way. it is way ahead of it's time, sadly they leave just enough out and add an rather confusing reconciliation that was just enough to pull the wool over 1950s audiences eyes. and if you don't read between the lines, the story is really a big too do about nothing. I guess I find myself in the middle, I wonder if there was a deleted scene that would have stated this better. So I find myself really liking and kind of hating this movie at the same time. Obviously Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman are fantastic, but it does have that very talkie, play like feel about it. Yes I did like this movie, because thankfully a more modern audience can see through the censorship taking place, but it is a bit of a frustrating watch, and a sad example of right-wing government convenorship of LGBT rights that took place less than 70 years ago. Notable feats: Well-received by both critics and audiences, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof was MGM's most successful release of 1958, and became the third highest-grossing film of that year, grossing $7.7m dollars. and was nominated for 6 Oscars, including best Picture. Note: Being released in 1958 Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is the 4th oldest film to make it into the top 100 and the second oldest to make the top 50. with 199 Points it is the highest ranking film on the countdown to have under 200 points at #46.
  9. #47 Bound (1996) - Directed by Lilly Wachowski, Lana Wachowski 198 Points | 4 Lists "Corky: You know what the difference is between you and me, Violet? Violet: No. Corky: Me neither." Top 10 Placements: 1 Country of Origin: USA Language: English, Italian Awards: N/A Box Office: $3.8m Availability: Paramount+ | Rent on Prime Video, AppleTV, Google Play. Genre: Drama | Thriller Reviews: Rotten Tomatoes: 86% METACRITIC: 64 LETERBOXD: 3.9 out of 5 IMDB: 7.3 out of 10 "Before the Wachowski sisters gave us the scoop on The Matrix, they pushed boundaries during the 90s indie boom with this neo-noir... "- Andrea Thompson, Chicago Reader About the Film: Bound is a 1996 American neo-noir crime thriller film written and directed by the Wachowskis[a] in their feature film directorial debut. Violet (Jennifer Tilly), who longs to escape her relationship with her mafioso boyfriend Caesar (Joe Pantoliano), enters into a clandestine affair with alluring ex-con Corky (Gina Gershon), and the two women hatch a scheme to steal $2 million of Mafia money. Bound was the first film directed by the Wachowskis, and they took inspiration from Billy Wilder to tell a noir story filled with sex and violence. Financed by Dino De Laurentiis, the film was made on a tight budget with the help of frugal crew members including cinematographer Bill Pope. The directors initially struggled to cast the lesbian characters of Violet and Corky before securing Tilly and Gershon. To choreograph the sex scenes, the directors employed sex educator Susie Bright as an ad hoc intimacy coordinator, and she also made a cameo appearance in the film. What I know About the Film: Being a fan of the Wachowski sisters for a while, this movie has been on my watchlist for a while, I just haven't gotten around to watching it yet, it's very well reviewed though and sounds like something I would really like, I'll have watch it soon. Notable feats: Bound received positive reviews from film critics who praised the humor and style of the directors as well as the realistic portrayal of a lesbian relationship in a mainstream film. Detractors of the film found its plot superficial and criticized the violence as excessive. The film won several festival awards. Bound is often cited as one of the best lesbian movies
  10. #48 Your Name Engraved Herein (2020) - Directed By Kuang-Hui Liu 195 Points | 3 Lists "It's Beautiful to fall in love at your age, it will come if it's meant to be. No one can stop it." Miller, Ready Steady Cut About the Film: Your Name Engraved Herein 'The name engraved in your heart' is a 2020 Taiwanese romantic drama directed by Patrick Kuang-Hui Liu and starring Edward Chen, Jing-Hua Tseng and Leon Dai. The film premiered in Taiwan on September 30,[4] followed by a global release on Netflix on December 23. What I know About the Film: I saw this movie fairly recently this year I believe. The story is touching, and pretty insightful, especially if you like me know almost nothing about Taiwanese history. It's good to know the nation has become more progressive in recent years, but sad that so many had to endure this kind of persecution for so long, definitely worth watching you should check it out if you haven't already. Notable feats: With over $100m in Taiwanese box office, it is the highest grossing LGBT film in the nation's history, becoming the first LGBT film to do so, it was also consequently the highest grossing film of 2020 in Taiwan. The film received five Golden Horse Award nominations, winning for Best Cinematography and Best Original Film Song.
  11. #49 C.R.A.Z.Y. (2005) - Directed by Jean-Marc Vallée 194 Points | 4 lists "What do you want to hear? That I'm gay? A fag? That I suck cock? Yes something happened but not with him. Top 10 placements: 2 #1 placement: 1 Country of Origin: Canada, France Language: French Awards: N/A Box Office: $3.7m Availability: Rent on Prime Video, AppleTV, Google Play. Genre: Drama | Comedy Reviews: Rotten Tomatoes: 100% METACRITIC: 81 LETERBOXD: 3.9 out of 5 IMDB: 7.8 out of 10 Fantastic performances, sharp wit and a raw honesty breathe new life into the rites-of-passage drama. - Liz Beardsworth, Empire Magazine About the Film: C.R.A.Z.Y. is a 2005 Canadian coming-of-age drama film directed by Jean-Marc Vallée and co-written by Vallée and François Boulay. It tells the story of Zac, a young gay man dealing with homophobia while growing up with four brothers and his father in Quebec during the 1960s and 1970s. The film employs an extensive soundtrack, featuring artists such as David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Patsy Cline, Charles Aznavour, and The Rolling Stones. What I know About the film: I watched this movie not that long ago, and I really liked it, it was such a well made film about about a family with all boys and one happens to be gay. funny, and emotional at parts. One interesting and kind of frustrating thing about finding this movie online is you have to type out C.R.A.Z.Y exactly in order to find it on most movie websites. Notable Feats: A popular piece in the Cinema of Quebec, C.R.A.Z.Y. was one of the highest-grossing films of the year in the province. The film won numerous honours, among them 11 Genie Awards, including Best Motion Picture. At Quebec's Prix Jutra film awards, it won 13 awards in the competitive categories from 14 nominations, becoming the all-time record holder for most award wins at that ceremony; it also won both of the box-office based awards, the Billet d'or and the Film s'étant le plus illustré à l'extérieur du Québec, for a total of 15 awards overall. In 2015 the Toronto International film festival critics ranked it among the top 10 Canadian films of all time. the film is loosely based on screenplay writer's own childhood.
  12. #50 Tokyo Godfathers (2003) - Directed By Satoshi Kon 181 Points | 5 Lists "What if a miracle like the Virgin Mary getting pregnant... was to happen to a homo?" Top 10 Placements: 1 Country of Origin: Japan Language: Japanese, English Spanish Awards: N/A Box Office: $453.1k Availability: Rent on Prime Video, AppleTV, Google Play. Genre: Drama | Comedy | Animation Reviews: Rotten Tomatoes: 92% METACRITIC: 74 LETERBOXD: 4.2 out of 5 IMDB: 7.8 out of 10 A modern animé classic fit for rediscovery by both adults and kids-not to mention a stirring celebration of inclusivity that remains ahead of its time. - Nick Schager, The Daily Beast About the Film: Tokyo Godfathers[a] is a 2003 Japanese adult anime Christmas tragicomedy adventure film written and directed by Satoshi Kon. The film stars live-action actors such as Toru Emori, Yoshiaki Umegaki, and Aya Okamoto as the lead voice actors. Kon was inspired by the 1948 American film 3 Godfathers to make the film. Unlike Kon's other films, Tokyo Godfathers contains no fantasy elements nor does it explore themes of the lines between fiction and reality, instead being grounded more in realism. However, as is typical of Kon's work, the film includes devices that are not straightforward, and Kon himself called it a twisted sentimental story. Tokyo Godfathers was released in Japan on November 8, 2003, and in North America on January 16, 2004. It won the Excellence Award at the 2003 Japan Media Arts Festival and Best Animation Film at the 58th Mainichi Film Awards. What I know about the film: I had heard of the film but, didn't know much about it before this countdown, I didn't even know one of the characters was trans, this movie sounds pretty unique and awesome though so definitely need to check it out soon. Notable feats: Is a very rare case of LGBT representation in animated film, slightly more comon now, but in the early 2000s this was almost unheard of. Showcases a uniuqe use of great storying telling coming from Japanse and helps the inrich the coulture of film and LGBT representation.

  14. Yeah this movie was fantastic, I loved it, part of me wished it was just a gay indi romance though. I would drink Jacob Elordi's bathwater too tbh. Barry Keoghan is outstanding.
  15. This movie started off with some great flare, it had a lot of humor in the first half and one beautifully shot battle sequence on in ice. the whole film was beautifully shot really and the costume designer needs an Oscar. but boy did this drag in parts and the last hour was the worst, it went from a somewhat quirky, darky and sexy take on Napoleon to a pretty standard war movie by the end. I would say if you loved history you may like that, but Riddley Scott has not been one to stick to close to history (The Duel being one of the most historically inaccurate films I have seen in a while, but that movie did keep my interest a bit more at least). this movie is almost an hour shorter than Killers of the Flower Moon, but somehow it felt longer. It was an alright movie overall, but it had some serious pacing issues and really dragged in the end, I would probably give the first half a B+ and the last half a B- so hovering at a low B atm.
  16. This just sucks, aside from All of Us Strangers, this was my most anticipated film for the remainder of the year. who knows WHEN it will come out now. really hope it doesn't drop on streaming...

  18. #51 Victim (1961) Directed By Basil Dearden (UK) 179 Points | 3 Lists Top 10 Placements: 1 About the film: Victim is a 1961 British neo-noir suspense film directed by Basil Dearden and starring Dirk Bogarde and Sylvia Syms. It premiered in the UK on 31 August 1961 and in the US the following February. It was the first British film to explicitly name homosexuality and deal with it sympathetically.[2] On its release in the United Kingdom, it proved highly controversial to the British Board of Film Censors, and in the U.S. it was refused a seal of approval from the American Motion Picture Production Code. Despite this the film received acclaim and is now regarded as a British classic, as well as having been credited for liberalising attitudes towards homosexuality in Great Britain. What I know About the film: I watched this movie earlier this year and it is a very well made if somewhat lower budget 1960s Neo-Noir thriller, what makes it stand out is that it is at least in terms of great Brittan the first film to ever say the term "Homosexual" out loud. not only that a gay man is the protagonist of the film, and the film garners sympathy for homosexuals' and treats the characters who are homophobic as ignorant or even cruel. this movie should be watched on those merits alone in my opinion, but it is just a well made film overall.
  19. #52 tick, tick... BOOM! (2021) Directed By Lin-Manuel Miranda (USA) 176 Points | 4 Lists "Lately, I've been hearing this sound. Everywhere I go, like a tick, tick, tick..." Top 3 Placements: 1 About the film: Tick, Tick... Boom! (also stylized as tick, tick... BOOM!) is a 2021 American biographical musical film directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda in his feature directorial debut. Written by Steven Levenson, who also serves as an executive producer, it is based on the stage musical of the same name by Jonathan Larson, a semi-autobiographical story about Larson writing a musical to enter into the theater industry. The film stars Andrew Garfield as Larson, alongside Robin de Jesús, Alexandra Shipp, Joshua Henry, Judith Light, and Vanessa Hudgens. Tick, Tick... Boom! had its world premiere at the AFI Fest on November 10, 2021, and began a limited theatrical release two days later, before streaming on Netflix on November 19. The film received acclaim for Garfield's performance, the editing, and Miranda's direction. It was named one of the best films of 2021 by the American Film Institute, and was nominated for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy at the 79th Golden Globe Awards, and Best Picture at the 27th Critics' Choice Awards. For his performance, Garfield earned numerous awards, including the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, as well as a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor. What I know about this film: Well I watched this film almost solely because it stared Andre Garfield, he is one of the most talented younger actors out there and one of my favorites, I had not even seen RENT, or any of Jonathan Larson's content before watching this, and I liked it so much I ended up watching rent.. this movie is better by long shot. Garfield is truly stunning in the lead role and boy can he sing. Robin de Jesus is also incredible though, the whole cast is great, and Lin-Manuel Miranda is of course great in his directorial film debut, but after seeing Hamilton I wasn't really surprised. Fun fact: Andrew Garfield sings a song titled 30/90 about turning 30 in 1990, I was born in 1990 and turned 30 in 2020. the year the film and that song was filmed. and the film was released in November 2021. the month I was born.
  20. #53 The Matrix (1999) Directed By Lilly Wachowski, Lana Wachowski (USA) 175 Points | 2 Lists This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill - you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes. Top 3 Placements: 1 Top 5 placements: 2 About the film: The Matrix is a 1999 science fiction action film written and directed by the Wachowskis.[a] It is the first installment in the Matrix film series, starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving, and Joe Pantoliano, and depicts a dystopian future in which humanity is unknowingly trapped inside the Matrix, a simulated reality that intelligent machines have created to distract humans while using their bodies as an energy source.[7] When computer programmer Thomas Anderson, under the hacker alias "Neo", uncovers the truth, he joins a rebellion against the machines along with other people who have been freed from the Matrix. What I know about the film: First off, I know I said I wasn't going to accept this film on the countdown, but after receiving the ballots, there ended up only being two films that made the top 100 and you couldn't 100 say were directly LGBT, and out of the top this one does have a tons of queer metaphors and trans allegory, which considering that both Wachowski siblings are both trans and have undergone transitioning is not really that surprising, so I just made two people very happy and perhaps a few very upset. but The Matrix is one of the best action and sci-fi films ever made it is on numerous best films of all time lists (ranks 16 on IMDB) and beat The Phantom Menace in 1999 for the best visuals Oscars (although TPM probably had better visuals, just not as good of story). I absolutely adore this film it is in my top 50 of favorite films of all time and there is a lot of allegory into about the world we live in, being queer ect. it is probably the most well known film in the entire countdown and I promise it is the last film on this countdown that's only LGBT content is brief, allegory or metaphor
  21. #54 God's and Monsters (1998) Directed By Bill Condon (UK, USA) 174 Points | 3 Lists "He's never met a princess, only queens" Top 3 placements: 1 About the film: Gods and Monsters is a 1998 period drama film written and directed by Bill Condon, based on Christopher Bram's 1995 novel Father of Frankenstein. The film stars Ian McKellen, Brendan Fraser, Lynn Redgrave, Lolita Davidovich, and David Dukes. Its plot is a partly fictionalized account of the last days of the life of film director James Whale (McKellen), known for directing Frankenstein (1931) and Bride of Frankenstein (1935). A veteran of World War I, the aged Whale develops a complicated relationship with his gardener, Clayton Boone (Fraser), a fictitious character originally created by Bram for the source novel. An international co-production between the United Kingdom and the United States, Gods and Monsters is produced by Paul Colichman, Gregg Fienberg, and Mark R. Harris; Clive Barker served as executive producer. As well as featuring reconstructions of the production of the Bride of Frankenstein, the film's title is derived from a scene in Bride of Frankenstein, in which the character Dr. Pretorius toasts Dr. Frankenstein, "To a new world of gods and monsters!" Gods and Monsters was nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Actor for McKellen and Best Supporting Actress for Redgrave, and won for Best Adapted Screenplay. Despite receiving positive reviews, the film was a box office failure. It was later adapted as a play of the same name which premiered in London at the Southwark Playhouse in February 2015. What I know about the film: I actually watched this movie before I watched either Frankenstein or Bride of Frankenstein which I kind of wish I had first because they are brilliant movies, crazy how after making such iconic pieces of art a man is shunned from society and his career is pretty over after being outed for being homosexual, but that was the 1930s for you I guess. and 40s 50s ect.. I don't know exactly how historically accurate this film was, but it's was incredibly engrossing and a fun watch none the less with very good acting from both Ian McKellen and Brenden Fraser. any fan of Frankenstein should watch it or heck anyone with any interest in queer history, or a young Brenden Fraser half naked.. (and not at all like The Whale) and you definitely should watch both Frankenstein and Bride and of Frankenstein if you haven't those are like essential classics.
  22. #55 A Single Man (2009) Directed By Tom Ford (USA) 173 Points | 4 Lists "A few times in my life I've had moments of absolute clarity, when for a few brief seconds the silence drowns out the noise and I can feel rather than think, and things seem so sharp. And the world seems so fresh as though it had all just come into existence. I can never make these moments last. I cling to them, but like everything, they fade. I have lived my life on these moments. They pull me back to the present, and I realize that everything is exactly the way it was meant to be." Top 10 placements: 1 About the film: A Single Man is a 2009 American period romantic drama film based on the 1964 novel of the same name by Christopher Isherwood. The directorial debut of fashion designer Tom Ford, the film stars Colin Firth, who was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of George Falconer, a depressed gay British university professor living in Southern California in 1962. The film premiered on September 11, 2009, at the 66th Venice International Film Festival, and went on the film festival circuit. After it screened at the 34th Toronto International Film Festival, The Weinstein Company picked it up for distribution in the United States and Germany. An initial limited run in the United States commenced on December 11, 2009, to qualify it for the 82nd Academy Awards with a wider release in early 2010. What I know About the film: A Single man was one of the first gay I've I had seen, it may not have had quite the same impact as "Brokeback" but it came close, it is a gorgeous film to watch and contains the most visually romantic and gorgeous scene I have ever seen of two men sharing a cigarette, which is kind of silly because cigarettes' are terrible for you, but damn do they make some good aesthetics for a film scene. I've always found Collin Firth a little overrated when it comes to sex appeal, but he is quite sexy here as a closeted 1960s teacher, and of course brilliant another emotional drama for the ages. I love this movie, please do you yourself a favor and give it a watch.
  23. I figured that was the case. but aside from the ending scene, I just didn't really feel it conveyed that very well. that might have something to do with the minimalistic style of the film I suppose though.
