  1. #71 Victor/Victoria (1982) - Directed by Blake Edwards 135 Points | 2 Lists Victoria: How long have you been a homosexual? Toddy: How long have you been a soprano? Top 5 placements: 1 Top 10 Placements: 1 Country of Origin: UK, USA Language: English, French Awards: 7 Oscar nominations, including 1 win (Best Music, original score, Henry ManciniLeslie Bricusse) Box Office: $28.2m, 5 Golden Globe noms including 1 win (Best Actress Julie Andrews) Availability: Rent on Prime Video, AppleTV, Google Play Genre: Comedy | Music | Romance Reviews; Rotten Tomatoes: 97% METACRITIC: 84 LETERBOXD: 3.8 out of 5 "Victor Victoria is a marvelous mixture of genders, a blatant attack on sexual attitudes that is both challenging and hilarious." - Bob Thomas, associated press. About the film: Victor/Victoria is a 1982 musical comedy film written and directed by Blake Edwards and starring Julie Andrews, James Garner, Robert Preston, Lesley Ann Warren, Alex Karras, and John Rhys-Davies. The film was released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, produced by Tony Adams and scored by Henry Mancini, with lyrics by Leslie Bricusse. Victor/Victoria was adapted as a Broadway musical in 1995. The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards and won the Academy Award for Best Original Score. It is a remake of the 1933 German film Victor and Victoria. What I Know About the film: I remember watching part of this movie, with my parents or sisters maybe? I think I was like 12 or 13 I think and they were pretty homophonic (still kind of are sadly) at the time and turned it off shortly after figuring out what it was about, drag was never really my thing, so I didn't really peruse trying to watch it again, now of course I'll watch just about anything and I don't have the same prejudice towards drag as I did as a teenager, and I love Julie Andews and Robert Preston so I definitively need to watch this at some point Cultural Impact / Relevance Being released in 1982 Victor/Victoria was one of the first mainstream American films to depict homosexual characters in a leading role. although it is a remake of a 1933 German film titled Victor and Victoria (although I'm not sure how prominent the LGBT themes were), being known mostly for family friendly musicals this film was bit of a change of pace for Julie Andews and Robert Prseton, having more mature and controversial themes, it ending up paying both as it received critical acclaim and earned them both Oscar Nominations, as well as a golden globe win for Julie Andrews and a best Picture nom (GG). it was also a sizable hit grossing $28m on a $15m budget about. about $86m dollars today.
  2. #72 I Love You Phillip Morris (2009) - Glenn Ficarra, John Requa 133 Points | 5 Lists "Enough Romance, let's Fuck!" Country of Origin: USA Language: English Awards: Critics choice Award: Best Comedy Box Office: $2m Dom $20.7m total Availability: Rent on Prime Video, AppleTV, Google Play Genre: Comedy | Drama | Crime | Romance Reviews; Rotten Tomatoes: 71% METACRITIC: 65 LETERBOXD: 3.4 out of 5 "With a solid script and daring performances, the film is enjoyable and will inevitably become a cult classic in spite of some of its uneven gags" About the film: I love you Phillip Morris, is a 2009 English-language French black comedy film[2] based on a 1980s and 1990s real-life story of con artist, impostor and multiple prison escapee Steven Jay Russell, as played by Jim Carrey. While incarcerated, Russell falls in love with his fellow inmate, Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor). After Morris is released from prison, Russell escapes from prison four times to be reunited with Morris. The film was adapted from the 2003 book I Love You Phillip Morris: A True Story of Life, Love, and Prison Breaks by Steve McVicker.[3] The film is the directorial debut of John Requa and Glenn Ficarra. What I Know About the film: I saw this movie quite along time ago when I watched this movie, and I remember it being quite funny, and a bit crazy, I love Jim Carry and Ewan McGregor, and they are both great in this crazy semi-bio pic about a gay con man. Cultural Impact / Relevance The film had trouble getting a theatrical release because of it's explicit gay sexual content and had to be re-edited before finding a distributor with Consolidated Pictures Group. the film showcases real diverse stories about people in the LGBT community showing that they are just as complex and morally complicated as everyone else.
  3. #73 The Children's Hour (1961) - William Wyler 132 Points | 3 Lists "I've been telling myself that since the night I heard the child say it. I lie in bed night after night praying that it isn't true. But I know about it now. It's there. I don't know how, I don't know why. But I did love you! I do love you!" Country of Origin: USA Language: English Awards: Nominated for 5 Oscars, including best supporting actress Fay Bainter, 3 Golden Globe noms (best Actress Shirley MacLaine, best supporting actress Fay Bainter and best director William Wyler) Box Office: $3m Availability: Rent on Prime Video, AppleTV, Google Play Genre: Drama Reviews; Rotten Tomatoes: 80% METACRITIC: 49 LETERBOXD: 4.0 out of 5 The Children’s Hour is a biting (though somewhat muted) condemnation of the corrosive natures of homophobia and hatred, and its all-too-inevitable conclusion seals it as a crushing –and necessary– piece of cinema.- Joe Muldoon, Battle Royale With Cheese About the Film: The Children's Hour (released as The Loudest Whisper in the United Kingdom) is a 1961 American drama film produced and directed by William Wyler from a screenplay by John Michael Hayes, based on the 1934 play of the same title by Lillian Hellman. The film stars Audrey Hepburn, Shirley MacLaine, and James Garner, with Miriam Hopkins, Fay Bainter (in her final film role), and Karen Balkin. What I Know About the Film: I have heard about this film for a while now and really need to watch it, it is one of the first mainstream american films made to directly address the topic of homosexuality, and as well as the homophobia that surrounded it back then, and sadly to a lesser extent still does today. I just watched the apartment, and it made be a big fan of Shirley MacLaine and nothing more really needs to be said about Audrey Hepburn. Cultural Relevance / Impact: Although it would be considered dated today, The Children's hour, showed a turning point in the publics views on homosexuality and lesbianism, in the 1950s it was a taboo topic and LGBT people were mostly treated with hostility, and in the 1960s it started moving towards that of sympathy although many still viewed it as a "mental illness" I am a frim believer in keep history in tack even if the views seem dated or even offensive today, because if we can't remember the past how are we ever to grow in the future. this film was released in 1961. ironically the same year as the British film "Victim" which both directly were about homosexuality.
  4. #74 My Policeman (2022) - Michael Grandage 131 Points | 2 Lists Tom: "You destroyed him." Marion: "We destroyed each other." Top 10 Placements: 1 Country of Origin: UK, USA Language: English Awards: Winner of the performance award (Toronto International Film Festival) Box Office: N/A Availability: Prime Video original Steam on Prime Video Genre: Drama | Romance Reviews; Rotten Tomatoes: 45% METACRITIC: 50 LETERBOXD: 3.1 out of 5 About the Film: My Policeman is a 2022 romance drama and based upon the 2012 novel of the same name by Bethan Roberts, it stars The film stars Harry Styles, Emma Corrin, Gina McKee, Linus Roache, David Dawson, and Rupert Everett. and is directed by Michael Grandage. It is inspired by the relationship between the writer E.M. Forster and Bob Buckingham. What I Know About the Film: I actually drove an hour to watch this movie in a theater even though I know I could watch it on streaming in a couple weeks, because I'm a movie geek and how often can you see Harry Styles in a 1950s movie as a gay policeman? I honestly don't understand why this movie got a mixed reception, I thought It was a very well made, touching and tragic movie, with good performances (yes I thought harry was fine in it). Cultural Relevance / Impact: Shows how dangerous it was to be a gay man in the 1950s and try to have a romantic relationship, boy have we come a long way since then, well probably always be known as that "gay police movie with Harry Styles in it" is the first film in to make the top 100 that actually has a "rotten" critic score. however considering it's 96% audience score, it would seem it was much better received by general audiences.
  5. Sorry about the long delay, its been in incredibly busy week. I am working on the next write up though.
  6. They will probably re-cast him, but Rey Stevenson gave my favorite performance of the whole season. the person they get to re-cast him, has some big shoes to fill. I LOVED the final. after that disappointing season 3 of Mando. this seems to be putting things right back on track. there is alot they still have to tell from where they left things though. I hope they live up to the hype.
  7. #75 Red White & Royal Blue (2023) - Directed by Matthew López 130 Points | 4 Lists "I've got the First Son in my office, mooing over the Prince like a cow in labor, and I'm not gonna get any work done until you put these two lovesick homosexuals on the phone with one another. I don't care what any of those wrinkled white men at Buckingham Palace have to say about it. I want you to march your skinny, perfect ass over to the Prince, hand him your phone, or so help me God, you will never" Top 10 Placements: 2 Country of Origin: USA Language: English Awards: N/A (it's too new!) Box Office: N/A Availability: Prime Video original Steam on Prime Video Genre: Comedy | Romance About the Film: When the feud between the son of the American President and Britain's prince threatens to drive a wedge in U.S./British relations, the two are forced into a staged truce that sparks something deeper. It is directorial debut for Matthew Lopez and based upon the 2019 novel of the same name. What I know about the film Red White & Royal Blue was just released on Prime Video in August 2023, making it the most recent film on the entire countdown, the movie pretty much follows most of the same tropes of a romantic comedy that were so popular in the 1990s and early 2000s. except it's gay and about royalty, it's royally gay. what can I say I love a good romantic comedy, will this movie stand the test of time? we'll see, but one thing this movie has going for it is it's witty dialogue. it's actually super funny, clever, sweet, and just the right amount of cheesy. my bread and butter. so I ate this up. Cultrual Relevance / Impact The film hit the #1 worldwide streaming on prime video upon releases and is already among the top 3 most watched romantic comedies of all time on prime video. The film received favorable reviews from critics and audiences currently sitting at 75% on Rotten Tomatoes. Taylor Zakhar Perez will be remember for his great ass- awesome performance and Nicholas Galitzine for all those princely speeches.
  8. Top 75 ya'll! it's been along time coming but we are getting there! Getting out of the bottom of the barrel and edging our way to the cream of the crop!
  9. #76 Shelter (2007) - Directed by Jonah Markowitz 130 Points | 3 Lists "Who knew there'd be so much drama inside the gates of Pacific Bluffs? I never knew" Country of Origin: USA Language: English Awards: GLAAD Media Awards – Won, Outstanding Film – Limited Release Box Office: $142.7k Availability: Buy on Amazon | stream on Here tv Genre: Drama | Romance At the end of the day, Shelter is a movie that just makes you happy. It's the kind of film you watch when you want something that is wholesome, but not chaste, that will end happy. - Amanda Jane Stern, Film Inquiry. Reviews; Rotten Tomatoes: 60% METACRITIC: 66 LETERBOXD: 3.5 out of 5 About the Film: Forced to give up his dreams of art school, Zach works dead-end jobs to support his sister and her son. Questioning his life, he paints, surfs and hangs out with his best friend, Gabe. When Gabe’s older brother returns home for the summer, Zach suddenly finds himself drawn into a relationship he didn’t expect. What I know about the film: Shelter was one of the first gay films I ever watched, it was also probably the first "good" gay romance film I saw that didn't end with a sob inducing tear fest, although there were some tears of joy I think, this movie is like a nice bowl of hot soup on a cold winter's day. It has it's share of drama, but it's so sweet and idyllic that you can just relax and enjoy it's coziness. and it's also well acted and competently made. so it's not a cringe-fest to watch unlike a lot of 2000s LGBT films. seriously this is a great movie, you definitely should check out if you haven't. Cultural Impact / Relevance Adds to the list of well made, happy LGBT american films made in the 2000s. gained enough attention to actually garner a consensus on Rotten Tomatoes and mattacritic with "generally positive reviews" and is considering a modern, LGBT Indie classic.
  10. #77 Bad Education (2004) - Directed by Pedro Almodóvar 125 Points | 5 Lists I think I've just lost my faith at this moment, so I no longer believe in God or hell. As I don't believe in hell, I'm not afraid. And without fear I'm capable of anything. Top 10 placements: 1 Country of Origin: Spain, USA Language: Spanish Awards: 1 BAFTA nomination (best forgiene language film) Box Office: $5.3m Dom and $40.4m Worldwide Availability: Rent on Amazon | Apple+ TV | Google Play Genre: Drama | Music | History In accounting for Almodvar's identity as an artist and a man, Bad Education comes together like a bold and far-reaching summation of his career to date.- Scott Tobias, AV Club Reviews; Rotten Tomatoes: 88% METACRITIC: 81 LETERBOXD: 3.9 out of 5 About the Film: An examination on the effect of Franco-era religious schooling and sexual abuse on the lives of two longtime friends. What I know about the film: Not alot, it stars Gael García Bernal, who I think is a fantastic actor, and was produced by the studio El Deseo which has produced alot of Latin american and Spanish LGBT films, including Pain and Glory one of my favorite LGBT films, it was an acclaimed film and looks really good so I will definitely have to watch it now. there is another film titled Bad Education from 2019. that also explores LGBT themes, but in the end this film was the favorite and made the top 100. Cultural Impact / Relevance Continues spans reach as dominate force force strong LGBT content in films, and with an 88% fresh rating it is one of the highest rated LGBT films ever. and to quote Ann Hornaday from The Washington Post "To watch Bad Education is to revel, along with Almodóvar, in the power of cinema to take us on journeys of breathtaking mystery and dimension and beauty."
  11. #78 Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) - Directed by Bryan Singer 124 Points | 6 Lists "We are the champions..." Country of Origin: USA Language: English Awards: 4 Oscar wins (Best actor Rami Malek, best film editing, best sound editing and mixing) and 1 Nomination for best Picture, 5 BAFTA nominations, including 2 wins (best actor, Rami Malek and sound) and 2 Golden Globe wins (Best Picture - Drama, and Best actor Rami Malek) Box Office: $216.7m Dom and $910.8m Worldwide Availability: Rent on Amazon | Apple+ TV | Google Play Genre: Drama | Music | History You end up with a very safe and conventional biopic that aims more at being a crowd-pleaser than an in-depth character exploration. - Keith Garlington, Keith & the Movies Reviews; Rotten Tomatoes: 60% METACRITIC: 49 LETERBOXD: 3.4 out of 5 About the Film: The story of the legendary British rock band Queen and lead singer Freddie Mercury, leading up to their famous performance at Live Aid (1985). What I know About the film: I like Queen's music quite a bit, I actually listen to a few of their songs quite regularly, I don't know if I would call myself a queen super-fan or anything, they had some absolutely fantastic music, but I know very little about them personally, expect that Freddie Mercury was gay. so I guess what I am saying is I was just kind of a causal fan, who wanted to see a movie that gives a little insight on who he was and see some of his greatest hits played in a bombastic way and I feel like this film achieved that for me. I know some people have some pretty strong opinions about this movie, that is wasn't accurate enough, it wasn't gay enough, and hey they are probably right, but I actually really enjoyed this movie. it was a fun bombastic movie. It wasn't my favorite movie ever but I really enjoyed it. and thought that Rami Malek was fantastic as Freddie Mercury. Cultural Impact / Relevance One of those strange instances where a film comes out, get's a mixed response from critics, but they love the lead actor, and it looks great and sounds great on a technical front so they shower it with a bunch of awards and it ends up with a best picture nomination, considering it is the highest grossing music biopic off all time and it has much better audience scores I think it was embraced my the general public quite well, and at $910.8m it is the highest grossing film on the whole countdown.
  12. It's simple enough, make a diary of every film you watched this year with gifs. (or an image if there is no gif for the film). Bonus: don't list them film titles and have the person below you guess the names of the film (i watch ALOT of movies so I will be separated my posts per month, films watch in Jan Feb ect.)
  13. So this movie looks ok. was not a big fan of Captain Marvel though, but I'll probably see it. I'm thinking $200-$250m dom. which would be fine.. imo. or would that be bomb territory? I just don't see any scenario where this tops $300m at this pount.
  14. #79 Strangers on a Train (1951) - Directed by Alfred Hitchcock 124 Points | 4 Lists "I still think it would be wonderful to have a man love you so much he'd kill for you" Country of Origin: USA Language: English Awards: 1 Oscar Nomination (Cinematography) Box Office: $2.9m Availability: Rent on Amazon | Apple+ TV | Google Play Genre: Crime | Thriller The upshot is a perfect Alfred Hitchcock thriller...with a ingenious plot taken from a Patricia Highsmith novel and a memorably seductive villain. - Jake Wilson, The Age (Australia) Reviews; Rotten Tomatoes: 98% METACRITIC: 88 LETERBOXD: 4.0 out of 5 About the Film: A psychopathic man tries to forcibly persuade a tennis star to agree to his theory that two strangers can get away with murder by submitting to his plan to kill the other's most-hated person. What I know About the film: I watched this movie a year or two ago and I loved it, the gay subtext is a little more vague than in "Rope" but it is believed the the villain is gay and in love with Farley Granger's character. this is the movie that "Throw mama off the train" is actually based on. Cultural Relevance / Impact Upon release this film actually received mixed critic reviews, praising the performances, but criticised the "crazy murder scenario" whereas today it has an overwhelmingly positive reception and is considered one of Hitchcock's best films. Being released in 1951, it is the third oldest film to make the top 100. It is the second Alfred Hitchcock film to make the top 100

When they recognize to be childhood friends, Eugenio offers him work for the summer. A power and desire game starts and their relationship grows beyond their friendship. What I know About: This is Marco Berger's third film and the second and highest ranking in the countdown, you can see the improvement in filmmaking here, it's a small story taking place in just a couple locations, but it is a very sweet movie. apparently Berger produced this movie through a Kickstarter campaign, with a budget of $67,000. it was intended as a modern Jane Austin story, evoking the same themes of her stories such as people from two different social backgrounds, falling for each other. Cultural relevance / Impact: Further's Berger's signature film style of moody gay romance films, is the most well know film titled Hawaii, that isn't about Hawaii. Adds diversity to Argentinian LGBT Cinema.

Determined not to fall short of their peers, the girls try to cram four years of fun into one night. What I know About: I watched this movie a couple years ago, and it is really funny, In my opinion, Billy Lourd as Gigi was the best part about this movie, it was the first movie where I was like she can act and she is funny. Apparently this movie was in development as far back as 2009 and it would have been a very different film, they re-wrote Kaitlyn Dever character as a lesbian, she was not in the original script, and they were looking for boyfriends for the prom in the first draft. There is this scene with Amy's character dreaming over a girl and watching her skateboarding and the scene is so perfect, flipped the trop on his head and made it into a really sexy scene . Cultural relevance Impact: This is Oliva Wilde' first turn as director, and was considered a massive critical success, garnering near universal praise for the direction of of the film, it received an BAFTA nomination and a golden globe nom.
  19. #82 X-Men Days of Future Past (2014) - Directed by Bryan Singer 120 Points | 2 Lists "All those years wasted fighting each other, Charles... to have a precious few of them back" Top 3 placements: 1 Top 5 Placements: 2 Country of Origin: UK Language: English Awards: Was nominated for 1 Oscar (visuals effects) and 1 BAFTA (Visual effects) Box Office: $233.9m Dom $746m WW Availability: Rent on Amazon | Apple TV | Google Play Genre: Action | Science Fiction | Adventure "The only things larger than the movie's lengthy list of stars are the big ideas contained within. - Richard Crouse Reviews; Rotten Tomatoes: 90% METACRITIC: 75 LETERBOXD: 3.6 out of 5 About the Film: The X-Men send Wolverine to the past in a desperate effort to change history and prevent an event that results in doom for both humans and mutants. What I know About the film: Ok, I know what you're thinking.. Kalo what the fuck is this movie doing here? I know I know this movie is not exactly LGBT.. directly anyways or is it? first off, I saw this film opening weekend any I am a massive comic book film geek and have seen almost everyone in theaters for the past 10 years (yes even Blue Beetle). but yeah I'm getting a little tired of them, but X-Men Days of Future past is imo the best X-Men film ever, (yes even better than Logan). and one of my favorite films of all time, but I actually did not include it on this list. but two people did and they listed it very high. so here it is. As for the gayness, from the first film the X-Men has kind of always had a double meaning, not only is the director Bryan Singer gay, the Mutants themselves are considered a alternate class of citizen who had to fight for their rights and have faced major persecution just for being a mutant, different. even the timeliness is similar to the LGBT movement, Days of Future past, takes place in the early 70s (well the early timeline anyways). shortly after the time stonewall. DOFP in particular deals with deep themes of acceptance and "coming out" Magneto himself tells the mutants to "come out" and this stems all the way back to the first film, seeing it as a kid like 13 or so, I being gay, even though I wasn't fully accepting that's what I was at the time. I instantly saw the comparison I think any gay person would and probably a lot who aren't, in a sense it was movie like this that helped me accept who I was. and this being the best in the series and imo more than just a dumb superhero film, with deeper subtext does fit the bill, not to mention the possibility that Charles and Erik are gay lovers separated by opposing views. also Actor Ian McKellen is gay (who plays older Magneto) Elliot Page (who plays Kitty Pryde) is trans, and late the Character of ice-Man was revealed to be gay in the comics and mystique is bi. so yeah this series is pretty gay. this is a lovely film. so maybe watch it again with these themes in mind and see if you can pick up on them: Also this speech is pretty straight-forward imo: Cultural Relevance / Impact At 90% on Rotten Tomatoes it is the highest rated X-men main series film (Logan has a higher 94% but it is a spin-off). at $746m it is the highest grossing X-Men film as well as the second highest grossing film on the countdown. created endless speculation and shipping of Charlie Xavier and Erik Lenhser as gay lovers.
  20. #83 The Long Day Closes (1992) - Directed by Terence Davies 119 Points | 2 Lists Top 10 placements: 1 Country of Origin: UK Language: English Awards: Cannes film festival Palme d'Or Nomination, Terrence Davies Box Office: $22.8k Availability: Buy on amazon | The Criterion Collection Genre: Drama " [T]hough his work is always suffused with melancholy, the predominate feeling of The Long Day Closes is one of deep, enveloping love for the music, movies, and comforts of his youth." - Scott Tobias, The Dissolve Reviews; Rotten Tomatoes: 81% METACRITIC: 85 LETERBOXD: 4.0 out of 5 About the Film: A lyrical reverie about a young Liverpool boy coming of age in the 1950s among his loving family and the austere Catholic Church as he enters the rigors of school, nurtures a bedazzled love of the movies and longs for companionship. What I know about the film. Not much, I have just recently watched Terence Davies' Benediction and found it a little dull tbh, but the premise of this film does seem really interesting and I love movies about movies, and lonely little gay boys who turn to movies and music for comfort sounds an awful lot like my childhood lol. Cultural Impact / Relevance With it's extremely high critic scores, it is considered by many to be a masterpiece and having 30+ years on it is something of a hidden gem classic. Here is a blurb from Dennis Lim about the film:
  21. #84 Tropical Malady (2004) - Directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul 118 Points | 2 Lists Top 10 Placements: 1 Country of Origin: Thailand Language: Thai Awards: Winner Cannes film festival Grand Jury Prize Box Office: $46.8k Availability: Buy on amazon | Kanopy US | Youtube Genre: Drama | Fantasy | Romance "For an exquisite taste of sensory cinema, look no further."- Jeff Shannon, Seattle Times. Reviews; Rotten Tomatoes: 80% METACRITIC: 81 LETERBOXD: 4.1 out of 5 About the film: A romance between a soldier and a country boy, wrapped around a Thai folk-tale involving a shaman with shape-shifting abilities. What I know about the film: I had never heard of this film until I saw it pop up on the lists submitted here, but the fact that it is listed as a "Thai romantic psychological drama art film" makes me super intrigued already. its apparently based on the story of a soldier who falls in love with a country man and then one or both of them shape shift into an animal. the film was first screened at Cannes film festival and apparently several audience members left before the movie was over and several booed it when it was over, and then it won the Jury prize. the film has pretty positive reviews from critics and general users so I'm thinking the latter was closer to the truth for this movie Cultural Relevance/ Impact. Showcases taiwanese art house cinema as a driving force for creativity in international cinema. tells a diverse, unique LGBT focused story.
