  1. I was in circuit mall last Sunday and checked the cinema out of curiosity in the early afternoon. Seats around half full for Partners in Crime and Deleter on an early afternoon. Labyu with an accent 1/4th full Nanahimik ang Gabi almost empty

Anecdotal but In my social feeds Deleter is the one with the most buzz I feel

Family Matters is the one I'm most interested in seeing.

My brother in law and his family were planning to watch Avatar last Jan 1 but when they saw it wasn't showing asked me which MMFF entry would be nice to watch instead. I told him Avatar was coming back on January 8 and convinced to just wait instead. I'm so orry MMFF

    Fine I'll do it.

The original article that started the $2b misinformation.

    https://variety.com/2022/film/news/avatar-2-budget-expensive-2-billion-turn-profit-1235438907/

The above is what Jim said, not to them but to GQ, that variety quoted in their article and they extrapolated to mean the break-even is 2 billion dollars.

So first Jim never gave a concrete number, that's the first point.

Second point, Jim is talking about a business case he had. A business case for Avatar 2 to get greenlit. That's over 10 years ago. The highest grossing films back then looked a little different.

Variety dropped the ball on this one, probably because they weren't the ones interviewing Jim so they minderstud. Terrible reporting honestly.

Jim never gave a concrete number but I mean it makes sense that a majority would assume he was talking about the third highest grossing film today and not ten years ago. Also I won't blame a forum member for believing something that was reported in all the major trades. I won't hold Cameron blameless as well, He knows how the media is and how it would interpret his words.

Anyway ten years ago Avengers was the third highest grossing film at 1.5 Billion so that number matches with what others here have computed.

  3. Will Smith from Pursuit of Happiness

As for Jake Sully I found him more interesting as a character in the sequel compared to the first. I agree he makes some bad parenting decisions but I always felt he was genuinely doing what he thought was best and even had some doubts himself and was just trying to do the best he could. I think he benefited as well from having the spotlight moved to his kids.

If the trend continues, those movies ranked below #4 will be pulled out from cinemas.

Doesn't this happen every filmfest even pre pandemic? Heck I remember years ago I went to see an indie film on Friday night and it had already been yanked from cinemas. It opened on Wednesday. Just 2 days.

Well i picked the first 4 eps vs the first movie of the trilogy first to have comperable runtime and also cause they arent centered towards large climactic battles but either way i think my point still stands if you pick the last 4 eps of a GoT season that include some climactic spectacle and Return of the King or the Two Towers

But what about Rings of Power 😎

  6. I do agree a poor cinema experience can be a turn off. My first screening of Wakanda Forever I don't know if it was a projection or screen issue but it looked so dark. I could barely see anything during some evening scenes.

Watching something in a bad cinema and then noticing that the image is clearer on a high end TV when they watch the movie again months later has discouraged some of my friends from returning to the cinema.

  7. Pre Covid Star Cinema would have a lot of mainstream rom com hits anytime in the year.

They debate a lot about whether cinemas are dead in the main forum because of Covid and streaming. So far it feels really true here in the Philippines. If this years MMFF earns money I will be happy. That may also help future releases.

  8. I am interested in seeing Family Matters and actually think it may surprise and be number 2.

Sadly I think the Philippines is one of the worst countries for box office enthusiasts for us. No site with a weekly top ten. Sometimes we need to wait until the studio announces the total gross. Numbers for flops hard to find. And even the MMFF remember a few years ago they made a new rule not to announce the box office gross so as to not create a bandwagon effect for the poor performers

I haven’t seen it yet, but Babylon strikes me as something so ambitious and out there that it might take several viewings to fully appreciate what Chazelle has done.

I get that plenty will watch a film once, form an opinion, and then that’s it. Set in stone.

For others, and I’m sure there’s plenty of us on here, we might end up doing complete u-turns on movies as we watch them more and see things we didn’t contemplate or appreciate initially.

I’m wondering what films some of you guys have done these u-turns on. Perhaps a film you loathed in cinemas that you now hold in a much higher regard?

I adored Superman 4 The Quest for Peace when I was a kid. I watched it again as an adult and I thought it was garbage.

What this elides is that Movie A is implicitly coming out in a time period where $1000 is worth much less than $500 was in the time period that Movie B came out. The producers behind Movie B are going to be much happier.

Good point. Honestly I wasn't thinking of movies from different time periods when I wrote that as I was thinking of National Cinema day with all tickets being a dollar.

Another thing though why I prefer gross. With admissions the records of classic movies will never be broken. But with gross you are always dreaming of the next biggest opening ever. You wonder when another all time grosser will appear. It's more exciting and fun haha
