Captain America: Civil War (2016)
yads replied to Dementeleus's topic in Review That Movie! (Spoilers Allowed)
I'll have to see it again before I cement my opinion, but I suspect this might end up being my favourite Marvel movie. TWS is tighter from start to finish, but this is much more emotionally powerful and much more funny. Plus the airport scene is pure bliss. The only real negative I can think of - other than the Sharon Carter kiss that came out of nowhere - was the shaky cam in the first half hour. Seriously, unless you're Paul Greengrass cut the fucking shaky cam out! A -

Given the ecstatic buzz coming out of Marvel and the great trailer I can't see any way this does under 400m. And Baumer: forget about this being a sequel to WS - it's an Avengers film in all but name, and it's likely to be orgasmically received by fans and the public. AOU is the floor, IMO. I'll put in $10. But I won't be paying out.

The Hateful Eight (2015)
yads replied to Dementeleus's topic in Review That Movie! (Spoilers Allowed)
To be honest I didn't even realise he was doing the narration. Which I guess is a good thing as it didn't pull me out of the movie (like his every cameo does). -

The Hateful Eight (2015)
yads replied to Dementeleus's topic in Review That Movie! (Spoilers Allowed)
I enjoyed this a lot. After reading some reviews I was expecting a nihilistic, misanthropic hate film... and I didn't find it that way at all. It was ultimately about a brother's love for his sister and a black man and white man finding common ground and mutual respect. OK, and some nihilism and misanthropy thrown in. Plus it was a relief that Tarantino didn't give himself another hideous cameo, with or without an "Australian" accent. -
Star Wars The Force Awakens (2015)

I think we're probably going to see something similar to The Avengers here. People who naturally focus more on the story of a movie will complain about TFA, while people who naturally focus more on the characters will enjoy it a lot. Personally I'm way more interested in character arcs than plot and I thought the new characters were all emotionally engaging... so I really liked the film. Unlike the prequels, I cared about what happened to these characters. They felt like real people, the locations felt real, the conflicts felt real. That all earns TFA a lot of goodwill - so I can ignore that it's basically lifting the entire plot from ANH. But I'd add that while it's fine to reset the saga like this with a loose remake of Episode 4, Episode 8 needs to be original. If they play the same card twice people will be a lot less forgiving. Also, I hope they never ever, ever, ever do another Death Star plot ever again. Ever. -

As a Winsome Whedon Worshipper TA stands as my fondest memory. But it's interesting how the record doesn't just get broken by a small amount every time... every few years it gets demolished. -

It's much simpler than that. Cap 2 and GOTG are good movies. TDW isn't. -
Yeah The Long Goodbye is awesome.

Completely incomprehensible plot, but it's all about the atmosphere and the Bogart-Bacall chemistry. A.

Goyer can't write and Snyder can't direct. Otherwise it's pretty good. Grade: D

I thought MOS was a decent movie until The Fight That Wouldn't End started. Then I got a headache.
