Considering I was on the opening day ops team for Pandora at DAK, I’m going with yes to being aware of it. Fantastic land, one of the only times modern Disney execs didn’t budget cut WDI (Cameron’s power likely had a lot to do with that). The attention to detail did WAY bigger things for the park and IP than Galaxy’s edge ever has for Studios and SW. -

Leaving this here as well (and no I won’t be responding to quotes due to moderation), but just since some want to act as though Nintendo’s modern kid appeal problem is some false narrative. The receipts from Nintendo’s data themselves: And yes, date showed Mario movie was very big with kids, again did a TON for Nintendo there. Stop making an argument with me I’m not making in the first place. -

Nah, there’s no pop culture footprint there like your Star Wars, potters, marvel, etc etc etc. Anyone who says otherwise needs to find the huge merch, spin off, multimedia, extended universe, cosplay, and conventions that don’t exist for Avatar or call it a day trying to keep this pointless argument up. It’s beyond tired. They are movies people tune in for, not pop culture things. And I’m the one who called A2 being a box office juggernaut when very few here did that first week of release, so I hardly need to be reminded about success metrics. -

So have we talked about how freakin massive Shrek 5 would be if kfp4 managed this? Because damn, that might just be Hollywoods current biggest goldmine right there -

??? I literally said kids loved the Mario movie. As for before that? Yeah, Nintendo had plenty of data showing their target audience was skewing more and more adult and the number of under 18 demo of Switch owners is incredibly small given the massive 140m install base -

Avatar IS culturally irrelevant. People are highly interested in experiencing those movies on the biggest screen possible though. Big difference. Kid interest in Nintendo branded stuff has been a sore spot for them in recent years, but I will say the Mario movie made huge strides for them in that respect and kids definitely got on board. -

I said then and will say now KFP2s performance at the time was completely shocking. There was really no reason for it not to be huge, and now it’s more true than ever now that we know obviously the target kid audience of those first two look back on it very fondly. -
Well it is nice at least to FINALLY have an actual blockbuster BP winner again. Perhaps fittingly, both the Oscars and Grammys this year had the least pacing/dull issues in ages and ages as well. I’m impressed (though not holding my breath about it being more than just a fluke). But if this year wasn’t a fluke and we start getting relevant winners with less dull shows again, maybe Oscars will actually have a legit comeback.

I never imagined Migration would end up being such an important movie for the medium, but it kind of is. Literally the only big studio original animation with a healthy profit of the past couple years. Problem still is that they had to make the budget tiny to pull it off. We will definitely see a dip in animation quality if studios now have to make their original animation for under 100, which is sad
-
Ugh, that’s way way better of an opening for KFP4 than it ever deserved. This is absolutely sending the wrong message to Hollywood that animation is only viable in sequel form now. The last stronghold for originality in the industry is caving, and once the floor falls out on all these sequels because eventually they will run out of ones people care about, then what?

Well I guess we know the cap at this point on OW for the modern adult blockbuster (esp male skewing) And by adult I don’t mean R rated like certain CBMs, I mean mainly over 30 -

Imagine if Dune 2 wasn’t too far along to cancel after 1… hopefully studios see this as meaning something planned as multiple parts doesn’t have to succeed out of the gate if the quality is there. Migration has turned into a massive win for Illumination at this point. 300 WW against a 70 budget? Yeah, that’s a hefty profit. Their track record of very profitable movies honestly continues to floor me. Nothing has broken it yet as far as their animation goes. -

I think social medias relevance was mostly equal 10 years ago to today for movies. Now music, that’s a whole other story thanks to TikTok (but maybe not anymore with all these labels yanking). TikTok is the big difference for movies too, but not as often as music.
