Great review Baumer and I agree with a lot of it. I just saw it yesterday and it definitely sticks with you! The visuals and music are hypnotizing and NWR has such a great style for visuals. I was so glad this was way better than Only God Forgives, which was such a letdown to me (minus the visuals) after the excellent Drive (which I love). The first I'd say hour and 10 minutes of this I loved, but then NWR does go off the deep end a little (which seems to be his new thing) and the last half hour of craziness brings the film down a little for me, but it's still a solid B/B-. There were only like 8 people in the theater when I saw it, but the necrophilia scene (specifically when she spit in the corpse's mouth) made one couple walk out lol. I imagine that happened in al ot of theaters, but obviously they didn't know the director and what they were getting into.
The opening shot and music was also a, whoa I'm in for something very cool and different here, and I also loved the scene where she was the closing model for the runway show and has her sort of Black Swan transformation and goes all innocent blue to demon red (though that transformation happened a little too fast for me, but it's only a 2 hour movie so what are you going to do). I also kept thinking why doesn't she use some of the modeling money she should be getting and get the fuck out of the shitty motel!
And I know you didn't want to spoil the ending in your review but I loved
But yeah, if you can deal with a little craziness and a few fucked up scenes, it's a real visual treat and journey worth taking. Some will say it's trash, and yeah it's not for everyone, but I think it's worth it if you're into a little weird and out there movies. Think Black Swan meets Mulholland Drive meets (mainly the visuals of) Only God Forgives.
Edit: Upping to a B/B+ It really does stick with you and I want to see it again.
