  1. New poll up. Thor 2 has already passed Thor's opening day and opening Friday admissions. It is looking at a 1.7-1.8m opening weekend. Fantastic. Can't wait to see this tomorrow. 4.5m is happening although Ender's Game will try and cut into Thor 2's gross next week.Rigor Mortis is doing extremely well. It could find its way to just over 2m when the dust settles. Captain Phillips is doing pretty good as well. It could finish with about 1.5-1.6m.
  2. A note about Monsters University: I believe it has already passed 10m. If you look at its total after its 4th weekend, it had accumulated $9.31m. The problem with that number, however, is that by July 31, it had made 8.938m. If you add on the $476,000 reported by BOM, its total after the August 1 would be at $9.414m signifying that $103,000 has disappeared from Monsters University's total. I'm not sure if it's a simple clerical error or something more sinister perhaps (fudging?) but in my eyes, it has already passed 10m. It should stand at 10.75m after this weekend. I don't know why you are laughing because that is a very good weekend total. The One Direction movie only got limited showtimes at a handful of engagements. Theaters actually had to add showtimes due to the strong demand. Unbeatable has been doing spectacular numbers so far but the close battle for #1 last week was a pivotal week for Unbeatable. If it successfully defended #1 for the fifth week in a row, it will have been the only film since Avatar to reign on top for more than 4 weeks. No other film in at least a decade has achieved this feat. Unfortunately for Unbeatable, The Stolen Years won Sunday and can successfully claim victory over Unbeatable if you include the sneaks it got. Also, official weekend numbers are never published so we won't know who the victor really was. Still, the fact that a boxing movie could and will take down the much hyped Cold War from last year is a magnificent accomplishment. The Way We Dance is also another eye opener. It will supersede a 10 multiplier and 2m total is looking pretty good with holidays coming up.

Shield of Straw is looking to be this fall's leggiest foreign film. Before Midnight will be also be a film to watch given that its early special previews at Cityplaza and iSQUARE sold out within 1 hour. Growns Up 2 will be a major flop. The first one did really bad and it will have competition. It is being bookended by The Internship a week before and This is the End at the end of September. The middle of September will feature the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday which is why studios and distributors are snapping up slots quickly. Sadako 2 is coming off a huge hit here with Sadako and it is widely expected to win that weekend. Call the September 26 weekend the weekend of the long delayed films. 3/4 movies on that list have been delayed by at least 1 month from the US release date. Elysium has the edge with IMAX but Runner Runner could pose a challenge. The most interesting weekend of the fall season comes right at the beginning of October where 2 local releases go head to head. It will be Donnie Yen vs. Lau Ching Wan in the battle of superstars. But Gravity will be ahead of both of them due to IMAX and intense interest. Winter begins with Ender's Game out and it should be a big event movie. Early marketing has fired off posters with HK's financial district being destroyed. Thor is unleashed the following week and then we've got The Hunger Games 2 two weeks later. The Hobbit 2 will hope to reclaim the winter crown on December 12. December 19 is going to be one of the most heavily looked at weekends of the remaining 4 months. 4/5 scheduled releases are family films and 3 of them belong to the animation category. Out of the whole lot, The Wind Rises is the most anticipated with it being Hayao Miyazaki's rumored final film. This will challenge as the biggest film of the winter. Hayao Miyazaki's last 3 films have made 2.5m or more. I expect it to make at least 5m. Something will have to move because The Wind Rises is surely going to be an event film this winter. The Monkey King has just been recently moved to December 19, however, it is unclear if that date will stick. If so, then I guess they are hoping for big HK star + holidays will = Journey to the West box office total. One more family film will enter on Christmas Day. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 will hope to break 1m this winter. The first one was released on New Year's Eve and was a mild hit. Competition looks to be extremely fierce and until other animations gets out of the way on December 19, Cloudy 2 might not have a chance to get to 1m with this much competition scheduled.

Secretly Greatly - $86,380 (opening weekend actual) Outside the top 10 Forbidden Super Hero - $103,140 Mood Indigo - $14,181 (opening weekend actual) The Wolverine pushed hard on its 2nd weekend and came through with a spectacular hold. It will take down X-Men: First Class by next weekend. The Smurfs 2 came up short this weekend, unable to grab its first #1 ranking here. This really disappointed in a summer full of animation hits. This should be able to get more than 1m here but 1.5m is a stretch. R.I.P.D. was slightly below average but still managed to post a weekend over $400,000. This won't be crossing 1m. Pacific Rim had a good hold, down 52%. 4m is upcoming next week. Despite the horrible reviews, SDU had an outstanding hold. Although there was no local competition, it had to contend with widespread condemnation from users. There are 2 local movies coming out next week so it will have a hard time replicating this week's hold onto next week. 2m will be cleared. Despicable Me 2 did not have the best hold this weekend but it still did relatively well. Although Saturday and Sunday fell harder than usual, this will leave with more than 4m. Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum took everyone by surprise when it not only bucked the usual 60% decrease on its 2nd weekend for a Doraemon film but came through with the best hold of the top 10. This played to a wider base than most Doraemon films. The Rooftop did not generate a lot of interest this weekend. Most was centered on The Wolverine and SDU. This might not make it to $250,000. Secretly Greatly had a pretty good opening weekend and surpassed Miracle in Cell No. 7's opening weekend. There is still a lot of work to be done if it wants to make $250,000 but it has a really good head start with excellent WOM. Now, on to Monsters University. The reason why I labelled it in red is because I think the total is wrong. There is no way that it did less than R.I.P.D. and barely edged Pacific Rim. It was already ahead of Pacific Rim by almost $13,000 on Thursday so the end result is Monsters University is ahead by $13,000 this weekend? R.I.P.D. was ahead of Monsters University on Thursday but Monsters University steamrolled R.I.P.D. on the weekend so it does not make any sense why it would lose to R.I.P.D. Most likely it was a typo and the correct total should be $9,441,207 ($73.23m HK), which would be $503,160 (-46.6%) for the weekend.

It won't break out from under The Smurfs 2 today but putting as much distance as it can will make a difference in final rankings this weekend. The Smurfs 2 increased nicely. Great for The Wolverine. Routine decrease for Pacific Rim. R.I.P.D. saw a big increase today because it had a very low increase with Saturday's pre-sales. SDU declined a lot. Today will be its largest drop of the weekend. Not good for Despicable Me 2. Doraemon has virtually caught up to it. Doraemon soared today. It might have its best hold today which is the most important since Sunday's are the time where it does its most business. The Rooftop did OK despite being only one of three to drop in pre-sales. Decent for Secretly Greatly.

It is assured of beating X-Men: First Class now and becoming the highest grossing X-Men feature film ever. 3.5m is a done deal. In the battle for #2, The Smurfs 2 tried hard to pass Monsters University but Monsters stood its ground. Very good for Monsters University and nice rebound for The Smurfs 2 after that horrible Friday. We still need to see how Sunday unfolds before declaring who is #2 and #3. Right now though, The Smurfs 2 is still ahead due to a stronger Thursday and Friday. SDU had the 2nd smallest increase of the top 10 but it is a very good hold. Looks like Pang Ho Cheung movies are review proof for now. It has a terrible rating but that is not stopping people from checking it out. R.I.P.D. is also garnering negative attention from users hence the low increase today. Where Pang Ho Cheung gets a reprieve, this is more susceptible to negative reviews. It should start dropping heavily after this weekend. Meanwhile, the lower increase for R.I.P.D. was good for Pacific Rim as it enjoyed a wonderful increase today. 4m will be no problem at all now. Troubling hold for Despicable Me 2. On the surface, it is quite good but if you look deeper, its walk-ins have cooled considerably since Thursday. In fact, Doraemon has had more walk-ins than Despicable Me 2 the last 2 days. Besides that, it also was the only animation in the top 10 to not increase by at least 50%. This weaker hold, however, does not change the fact that it will gross over 4m. The Rooftop had the lowest increase of the top 10 but that was to be expected given Jay Chou's rabid fanbase wanting to see this as early as possible. It will make over $100,000 this weekend. Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum had a wicked Saturday. While Despicable Me 2 has seen its drops grow larger this weekend, Doraemon has done the opposite. $500,000 will happen now and it might even take down Doraemon: Nobita's New Great Adventure into the Underworld - The Seven Magic Users as the largest Doraemon picture in HK. Secretly Greatly was boosted by strong reviews and had a very big increase today. It will beat Miracle in Cell No. 7's opening weekend and could make over $250,000 total.
  10. I grew up on it too. But the decision to change the movie to live action was a bad one.

  13. At 4 PM, Monsters University is the only film in the top 10 to beat yesterday's admissions. Despicable Me 2 will quickly follow within the next hour.Weekend is tough to sort out right now. Wolverine/Smurfs 2/Monsters University and even SDU: Sex Duties Unit are ranked #1 at different theaters. That's good news for Wolverine. If Monsters University or The Smurfs 2 can't outpace Wolverine in pre-sales then there's nothing left to say except The Wolverine will win this weekend. (Not that there was any doubt but sometimes weekends can skew things heavily in favour of family films.)The Smurfs fell 13% on Friday but rebounded for an 83% jolt on Saturday. The Smurfs 2 is unlikely to follow that trend though given the weak weekend increases for animation this summer. It is looking at an 7-8% decline today but it could see a 60-75% bump tomorrow if it does get the family crowd going.

WOW. Its combined admissions is down -62.7% from The Smurfs' 3D Cantonese and English admissions only. At this rate, if it does not pick up, The Wolverine will win a 2nd weekend. Pretty good for The Wolverine. Good for Monsters University. Pacific Rim did decently. SDU did alright. R.I.P.D. is doing terribly. I have no idea why The GRAND decided to not let people use giftcards or complimentary tickets for this film for 2 weeks. It is not a blockbuster at all. The Rooftop did OK for being in 20 theaters but how frontloaded will it be? INSANE hold for Despicable Me 2. Despicable Me did not even do that great here so this is a huge surprise. Not good for Doraemon. Secretly Greatly is not doing that well.

Once Monsters University was not getting the 4-5 screens that Iron Man 3 or The Avengers got, Despicable Me 2's path to 3m became a lot easier. If theaters had given 4-5 screens to Monsters University like tracking suggested, DM2 would not have come close to 3m. Possible but it's unlikely. Market has been completely tapped out with 7 animation releases in the past 6 weeks.

Tiny Times - $43,830 (opening weekend actual) If we take out the $388,000 in previews for SDU and $16,630 for Hentai Kamen, the top 11 accumulated $4,362,139. That would make July 2013 the only July month on record to have 3 weekends tally above 4m or more. We'll need to see final numbers to make sure if it's the biggest July month ever. The Wolverine grabbed the biggest opening of all time for an X-Men movie despite not having X-Men in the title. It has excellent WOM and will be the 2nd X-Men film in the series to break 3m. SDU: Sex Duties Unit had massive previews which hugely inflated its opening weekend gross but with it, it still grossed 1m. Due to the huge sneaks and the poor reception, it's unlikely to pass 2m. Monsters University's conversion to 2D this week caused its gross to drop but it recovered very nicely on Sunday. It's now the 9th biggest film of all time. It won't break into the top 5 but it could sneak past The Dark Knight Rises and Transformers: Dark of the Moon for 6th all time. Pacific Rim held strong in the face of The Wolverine. Great WOM is flying around for this one. I think 4m is still going to happen. RIPD looks DOA and The Lone Ranger does not look appealing. Despicable Me 2 once again stole the show with the best hold of the top 10. It's a superb hold but I'm still very skeptical of it breaking 4m when The Smurfs 2 is coming out this week. Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum did its best numbers in 5 years. One of the bigger Doraemon openings of all time, this should be able to make it to $350,000. $400,000 might be reached if it does not get destroyed by The Smurfs 2. Turbo did not have a good hold. It looks like The Smurfs 2 will crush its screens this week. Tales from the Dark 1 is still dropping heavily but will inch past 1m in the next few days. Part 2 opens next week. Hentai Kamen: Forbidden Super Hero was hot on its opening weekend, snatching nearly a $20,000 PTA without previews from its opening weekend. Playing in just 2 theaters, it jumped over Tiny Times and Blind Detective into the top 10 with previews and will make over $100,000 total. Blind Detective had the worst hold of the top 10, falling over 2/3. Its fall signals the death of it making 2m and it looks to finish with only 1.97m. Tiny Times opened in 10 theaters and a $4,000+ PTA. It saw a Mainland boost over the weekend but it did not really excite crowds outside of its niche market.
  23. It is the biggest opening for an X-Men movie. WOM is very good so this will make 3m and become only the 2nd X-Men movie to do so. Monsters University did OK this weekend. It started off a little rough on Thursday but recovered nicely on Sunday. At this stage, 10m should be done by the August 15 weekend. Pacific Rim was ushered out of the room with The Wolverine around but did manage to break 3m this weekend. WOM remains strong so 4m is still up for grabs. It should be able to do it in 2 weeks. Depending on your view, SDU either grossed more or less than Vulgaria. Its previews represented a whopping 40% of its total opening weekend. WOM is horrendous and 2m is unlikely to happen. Despicable Me 2 fended off Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum for 5th and had the best hold of the top 10. Its surprising run is surely going to be one of Universal's highlights this summer but another big animation film is coming out next weekend. The Smurfs 2 will likely steal any remaining theaters outside of EDKO's block and it is going to be hit hard. Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum opened powerfully. Its estimated $195,000 opening is the best it has done in 5 years and is the 2nd highest grossing OW for a Doraemon film. By Doraemon standards, it's an excellent opening weekend.
