Good for World War Z's opening day. It wasn't enough to beat Battleship/Sherlock Holmes 2/Fast & Furious 6's opening Wednesday night shows but that's a good number. Zombies aren't that popular in HK though The Walking Dead might be starting to turn public opinion of it. Early reviews are coming in hot with lots of good scores posted. Awful for Hangover 3, After Earth and Switch. Good hold for So Young. Not good for American Dreams in China. Very good for Miracle in Cell No. 7. Woah for Fast & Furious 6. Blech for Pee Mak Phra Khanong. World War Z will lose to Fast & Furious 6 in admissions but it could end up being much closer than general expectations. Monsters University preview
  2. Badges of Fury, Jet Li's new movie, is getting special screenings on Friday. Interest must not have been high enough to open on the 28th. Pre-sales don't look all that great either. Now You See Me has regained #1 from World War Z. This should be Now You See Me's last day at #1.

Most holdovers suffered terrible drops with the loss of last Wednesday's holiday. American Dreams in China held extremely well. Nice number for Miracle in Cell No. 7. WOM is spreading. Pee Mak Phra Khanong is still doing quite good. Wednesday adm. World War Z's number is very good though. It's not a sequel nor does it features robots or aliens. It will aim for 1m this weekend. Pretty good for Now You See Me. It will fall harder later today but people have been very receptive to this caper flick. All the holdovers saw huge drops with pre-sales. So Young had an OK drop. This is why I don't like Wednesday admissions. Long Weekend and Dead Man Down are there because of house bookings not because it saw an upsurge of random viewers today.

  5. It's very hard to get final numbers for any film in HK as people in the industry focus on the here and now. Mojo says Saving General Yang made $819,042 but if you want accurate final numbers, you'll have to wait until July/August when half year reports come out and even then they only publish the top 10 films, sometimes 20. _________________________________________________________________________________ Now You See Me had a very strong Monday, nearly matching its Thursday admissions. Man of Steel IMAX update Most theaters have not posted Man of Steel's schedules yet but let's take a look at how well Man of Steel is doing in IMAX. At the iSQUARE IMAX, peak showtimes are nearing 50% capacity with a week and a half to go. Now, let's check the Megabox IMAX. Quite good. Most profitable showtimes are 20-30% full. People that go to Megabox don't buy tickets as fast as those people that watch in iSQUARE so Man of Steel won't have a problem selling out here. If you're worried about Man of Steel's pre-sales in IMAX, I reassure you that these are very good pre-sales. Most films fill up half of the theater a few days in advance. This is still more than a week out so Man of Steel is headed for a weekend north of 3m.
  6. Updated actual for Pee Mak Phra Khanong: $1,224,591 ($9,504,324 HK)World War Z Wednesday schedules are out. Most have allocated 1 screen for the zombie apocalypse film but some have opted to put it on 2 screens (either 2 for 3D or 1 for 3D/2D separately). Pre-sales are quite good at Langham Place and a few other locations. It looks to be shooting for a 1m OW.

Terrible for So Young. It had the weakest increase of the top 10. Great holds for American Dreams in China and Pee Mak Phra Khanong. Better for Miracle in Cell No. 7. Astronomical increase for The Great Gatsby. Man of Steel update Man of Steel IMAX tickets are on sale. On its 1st day of selling, peak showtimes are 30% full. It's not even close to the insane frenzy for Iron Man 3 tickets on its 1st day of pre-selling but Man of Steel will definitely get close to selling out. 18. Yes it is. The theater chains and distributor thought that since this movie was a huge success in China that it would be a hit in Hong Kong.

It will conjure up at least 25,000 admissions today. Hangover 3 and After Earth got abandoned. Switch and So Young are disappointing. American Dreams in China posted the biggest increase of the top 10 but didn't hold that well week to week due to direct competition. Legend No. 17 did fantastic with just 3 showings (which all have sold out) at The GRAND. Disaster for Fast & Furious 6. Pee Mak Phra Khanong is holding OK. Miracle in Cell No. 7 had a small Friday increase. WOM is not bad at the moment.

It actually gained from its holiday admissions and it beat After Earth and Hangover 3's opening day numbers. 1m is assured. It's going to make anywhere from 1.075m-1.2m this weekend. Not a great hold for Hangover 3. It's a better hold than what its WOM suggests but it seems the finale factor is having some pull with people. Terrible for After Earth. It has a rating score of 71% but it has come way down after it pulled a 91% rating from opening day users. Switch lost more than half of its holiday business. Of the 3 films that held sneak previews yesterday, Switch was the biggest loser of them all. Now You See Me increased from its holiday sneaks and So Young was flat. So Young did poorly. Ouch for Fast & Furious 6. It'll pass 3m this weekend. OK for Pee Mak Phra Khanong. Clearly, the distributor is going for one last push to make $10m HK ($1.288m US). It should be able to make it before Man of Steel opens. American Dreams in China suffered a setback with So Young and Switch making the rounds this week. It still held up pretty well with the amount of direct competition. Not good for Miracle in Cell No. 7. The Great Gatsby pulled out another good hold. 23. They need to stop rounding up the numbers. $1.7m does not equal $1.657m.
