  1. Wow Sam, Now You See Me is really breaking out. It's pulling in crazy numbers. It has already beaten After Earth/Hangover 3's opening day numbers. It could pull in 1m total.
  2. It's doing good. Thursday adm. Bad for After Earth and Hangover 3. OK for Switch. Not good for So Young. Weak for American Dreams in China. Catastrophic for Fast & Furious 6. Horrible for Miracle in Cell No. 7. Not good for Pee Mak Phra Khanong.

Incredible for Now You See Me. It will make more than $500,000 combined. Ok for Fast & Furious 6. Average opening for Switch. Nice gain for American Dreams in China. Not great for Pee Mak Phra Khanong. The Great Gatsby saw a huge increase. Disappointing sneaks for So Young. Weak for Thomas & Friends: Blue Mountain Mystery although it rocketed up 650% today. 3-day admissions Jun 10-12 Rank Title 3-day adm % chg from 4-day 1 The Hangover 3 45,632 -43.5% 2 After Earth 42,423 -47.5% 3 Fast & Furious 6 19,348 -35.8% 4 Now You See Me 16,704 -19.7% 5 American Dreams in China 11,275 -29.6% 6 Pee Mak Phra Khanong 9,347 -22.4% 7 Switch 6,350 -- 8 The Great Gatsby 5,091 -30.0% 9 Star Trek Into Darkness 3,751 -23.7% 10 Long Weekend 2,881 -35.6% The top 2 dropping the most from the 4-day suggests weak WOM. Contrast that with Now You See Me which had excellent holiday numbers. Fantastic. OK for Fast & Furious 6. Decent for American Dreams in China and Pee Mak Phra Khanong. Not bad for The Great Gatsby. Good for Star Trek Into Darkness. Ouch for Long Weekend.

Strong pre-sales for Now You See Me. Ok for Switch. Wow Thomas & Friends. It beat its Saturday admissions with Wednesday pre-sales.At 3 PM, Now You See Me, After Earth and Hangover 3 are separated by less than 300 admissions. Very close battle between the top 3.
  5. Is no one watching this? We're nearing the end. Harrison saved his best for last. Fantastic performance. He deserves to be this year's Voice winner.
  6. 2 weeks from now on opening weekend. I intend on seeing the film in 2D as I hate converted 3D. The only 3D that I like are the 3D movies that are filmed with RED Epic cameras.

Huge gains for The Great Gatsby, Star Trek Into Darkness and Iron Man 3. Long Weekend and A Wedding Invitation have not moved an inch from last Thursday.

  9. The studio/distributor decides it from what I know. Theater chains have a say too but I think it ultimately comes down to the studio. Higher prices have led to lesser admissions. Last year, The Hobbit clearly showed that people were not interested in HFR and higher ticket prices.
  10. Why are we debating this? 2013 was always going to have a lower gross than 2012. Compare the two lineups. 2012: The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, Ice Age: Continental Drift, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Life of Pi, Skyfall, Twilight: Breaking Dawn 2, Men in Black 3, Ted, The Hunger Games, Les Misérables, Wreck-It Ralph, Prometheus, Battleship, Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted 2013: Iron Man 3, Man of Steel, The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug, The Hangover 3, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Thor: The Dark World, Fast & Furious 6, The Croods, Monsters University, Despicable Me 2, The Smurfs 2, Pacific Rim, The Lone Ranger, The Wolverine, Oblivion If you look at the group as a whole, 2012 is much stronger than 2013. Why? 2012 features a lot of films that are the last in the franchise. The Dark Knight Rises, Men in Black 3, Twilight Breaking Dawn 2, Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted, Ice Age: Continental Drift can all be considered as the finale for their respective series. 2013 consists of a lot of sequels but most are the 2nd in the franchise not the 3rd. Most of 2012 can be summed up by either being an adaptation of a novel/play or a continuation of the franchise. 2013 seems to be a little more diverse than 2012 in content but that means it can be a hit or miss at the box office. Foreign films played a big role in 2012. Intouchables was obviously the standout and played a huge role in 2012's massive sum but 2013 hasn't had a worldwide phenomenon like Intouchables to boost its overall take yet.

Weekdays this week will be slightly inflated due to the Wednesday holiday. It looks like the holiday is starting to take effect. Good to very good drops for Fast & Furious 6, American Dreams in China, Pee Mak Phra Khanong and The Great Gatsby. Poor for Long Weekend and A Wedding Invitation. Huge dives for Star Trek Into Darkness and Iron Man 3. Holiday schedules are up and Now You See Me, So Young and Switch will be getting half-full day showtimes, affecting the rest of the field. To accomodate the new films, Hangover 3 is losing a screen, holdovers like The Great Gatsby, Pee Mak Phra Khanong are losing showings or new openers like Long Weekend/A Wedding Invitation gets their showings slashed.

Let's see where it stands against Hangover 2. Daily admissions (OW) Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday Total Hangover 2 15,379 18,257 24,823 26,021 84,480 Hangover 3 14,607 18,295 25,597 58,499 Gap -772 -734 40 -25,981 Hangover 3 has come back to take the lead over Hangover 2, however, Hangover 2 increased 5% on Sunday. It doesn't look very likely that Hangover 3 will be able to do the same. Pretty bad increase for After Earth. I expected it for Hangover 3 but Hangover 3 managed to do a little better than what I thought. After Earth didn't get a weekend rise. Now You See Me did very well today. WOM seems stellar too. Horrific hold for Fast & Furious 6. OK for American Dreams in China. Pee Mak Phra Khanong is losing steam. So is The Great Gatsby. Painful for Star Trek 2. Massive increase for Thomas and Friends: Blue Mountain Mystery. It rose nearly 5x from Friday. Disastrous for Long Weekend.
  17. Saturday adm. Now You See Me sneaks are doing good. Fast & Furious 6 is falling apart. Acceptable for American Dreams in China. Not good for The Great Gatsby. Thomas & Friends: Blue Mountain Mystery enters the top 10 after two very slow days in pre-sales. This is Pee Mak's first bad hold. Star Trek 2 crashed this weekend. Ok for So Young special screenings.
  18. Hangover is the franchise that raised the potential grosses of comedies in the past few years. Before, they were hit or miss for the most part but Hangover built a solid fanbase in comedies. Now you see comedies becoming more and more popular in HK. Look at Sacha Baron Cohen. Borat made $176,000 in 2007. Bruno made $218,000 in 2009 but The Dictator made $1.37m last year. Much of that increase wasn't because of market expansion or Sacha Baron Cohen fans. Ted, Horrible Bosses, 3 Idiots plus the entire Hangover series show that there is a place for comedies here.
  19. Big news coming out of Universal. Despicable Me 2 will have special screenings beginning on June 29. FOX certainly won't be pleased by this development. Man of Steel won't be affected very much but of course, Despicable Me 2 will take away slightly from Man of Steel's potential gross. Friday June 7 Rank Movie LW TW WKD % chg QD % chg 1 The Hangover 3 -- 18,295 -- +25.2% 2 After Earth -- 17,049 -- +6.8% 3 Fast & Furious 6 17,527 6,892 -60.7% +26.4% 4 American Dreams in China 5,891 3,654 -38.0% +37.3% 5 Pee Mak Phra Khanong 4,231 2,624 -38.0% +11.0% 6 The Great Gatsby 2,777 1,632 -41.2% +64.0% 7 A Wedding Invitation -- 1,114 -- +2.6% 8 Long Weekend -- 1,011 -- -5.2% 9 Star Trek Into Darkness 3,317 937 -71.8% +41.8% 10 Iron Man 3 2,205 487 -77.9% -5.1% Hangover 3 won Friday by a slim margin. The Hangover series has had weak Saturdays & Sundays in the past so if After Earth displays even a standard sci-fi increase, it will win this weekend. That mini increase for After Earth looks really bad compared to the rest. Fast & Furious 6 is slipping into freefall territory. Steady for American Dreams in China. Biggest surprise on Friday was Pee Mak Phra Khanong which saw a sluggish gain. The Great Gatsby had another great Friday increase. Awful for A Wedding Invitation and Long Weekend. Good increase for Star Trek 2 but its weekend hold is anemic. Horrible for Iron Man 3. Most of the top 10 looked torpid. Maybe people are waiting for Man of Steel.
  20. Looking ahead toward Man of Steel, it will do really well but not as well as Iron Man 3. I think it will do 3.6m OW.I think it could have done better if they had released it next Wednesday. Next Wednesday is a holiday and distributors love to schedule their films around a holiday but I understand that they want to wait until kids are out of school before they release it. It sucks when studios schedule their tentpole films in early June in North America. It means that HK will get it delayed and then have to suffer some two tier films for a few weeks.Ticket prices have been released and they are more expensive than The Avengers and Iron Man 3. Wow, WB is going all out for Man of Steel.
