Solid increase for Trance. Better for The Big Wedding but Friday sees bigger gains for romance movies. Platinum Data is frontloaded. Finding Mr. Right saw a nice push. No is doing pretty well. The achievement for No is, in contrast, pulling away viewers from Tokyo Family. Thursday saw more walk-ins for Tokyo Family than Friday.

Iron Man 3 ate into its gross.

Very good hold. It could hit anywhere from 45,000-50,000 admissions today. Nice jump for Trance. Standard increase for The Big Wedding. Looks like Platinum Data is frontloaded. Good bump for Finding Mr. Right. Nice hold for We Were There: True Love.

Very impressed by its admissions today. It seems headed for $210,000 and $285,000 for the 5-day (including Tuesday previews). It is overperforming in HK. The Big Wedding is looking slightly better. Adjusting its prediction to $140,000. Still not that great for it. Platinum Data had an OK opening day considering the number of theaters and screens it is playing in. If it's frontloaded like most Japanese films though, its opening weekend could be pretty low. Finding Mr. Right is clinging to the top 5. There was a slight mainland bump that pushed its admissions a little higher this week. Similar thing happened with Drug War although that is losing a lot more week to week. Huge fall for Evangelion. I still think $200,000 will happen. No opened in 3 theaters. Nothing worthy to report here. Conspirators took a huge dive but as the previous Detective films have shown us, these drops later on in its run are nothing new. Tokyo Family suffered heavier losses this week with Trance and No coming out but it's still a good hold. For Iron Man 3... Daily admissions (2nd WKD) Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday Total The Avengers 29,554 39,463 76,120 69,356 214,493 Iron Man 3 35,951 35,951 Gap 6,397 -33,066 -109,186 -178,542 It's a good hold. It left The Avengers in the dust. Huge 6,000+ admissions advantage heading into Friday. WOM is settling in at 88% which is a bit higher than The Avengers' WOM. It should be able at least 2.5m this weekend. 2.6m is where I think it will end up this weekend. If that happens, it would rank 2nd to Avatar for the biggest 2nd weekend on record. It only needs to clear 2.3m for it to slide into 2nd so that is pretty much sewn up. Does it have a shot at Avatar? Not counting it out but I need to see actuals first.

It's losing the battle against The Avengers heading into its 2nd week. After its Sunday increase, I didn't expect such a quick turnaround. Nevertheless, it breaks another record. Avengers made 56% of its gross in its first 7 days. If Iron Man 3 has the same % breakdown in gross, it will make 13m. Strong opening day for Trance. Thursday adm. Its 2nd Thursday pre-sales admissions made up 89.7% of The Avengers 2nd Thursday pre-sales admissions. 2m is still happening. Openers dominated the top 5 despite the biggest prize being out of reach. After a strong opening day with the holiday, Trance comes back down to Earth. WOM seems very positive at the moment. Opening day might turn out to be its best day of its entire run. If that occurs, it is looking at $200,000 this weekend. If positive WOM seeps in and general audiences are interested, this could go higher with about $250,000. The Big Wedding is a good counterprogramming choice for females. But Iron Man 3 will be a viable choice for females with the romantic subplot. Iron Man 3 is tapping into almost every genre and demographic besides very young children. This is headed for $125,000. Platinum Data is a semi-wide release out as another different offering to Iron Man 3. This sci-fi thriller doesn't really have any sci-fi worth watching than Iron Man 3 or a thriller that is more intriguing than Trance so I don't see it doing well outside its small niche audience. Finding Mr. Right is holding on even with direct competition from The Big Wedding. Let's see how far the Mainland push will help FMR this week. Huge collapse for Evangelion. It did what it set to do though. It has already beaten the 1st and 2nd in the series. Even with that huge drop, it will still make $200,000. Exceptional hold for Searching for Sugar Man.

A lot of theaters have cut down on Iron Man 3's 3D showings and given it more 2D showtimes. This is usually due to the distributor, they usually do not give many 2D showings at a theater on opening weekend unless its one of the worse off ones or moviegoers at that particular location have been known to reject 3D over 2D. Pre-sales remain fairly high although Thursday and Friday have been muted because of the Wednesday holiday. Thursday will see a small bump from the Wednesday holiday so a weekend above 2m is expected. Trance is getting a lot of theaters, releasing at least very wide. With its HK bow on May 1, it will be #2 this weekend. Pre-sales have been on the weaker side. The Big Wedding is behind Trance in theater count and pre-sales. Running at a brisk 90 minutes, this short comedy will the de facto #3. Platinum Data is a semi-wide release. Pre-sales have looked bad. No and We Were There: True Love are both limited releases. No is outperforming We Were There: True Love at this point. Holdover Evangelion 3.0 will stay in theaters for a 2nd weekend. After a good opening weekend, this has the capability of reaching $300,000 but only if it has a good hold. Finding Mr. Right will keep on showing at Broadway/AMC. All Broadway/AMC theaters showing this on Wednesday will continue to show on Thursday/Friday. Big loser seems to be Oblivion and Conspirators. Even some Broadway/AMC theaters have decided to take out Oblivion in favor of Finding Mr. Right or a new release. Conspirators seems to be losing steam against Drug War and Finding Mr. Right. Theaters are likely keeping Drug War and Finding Mr. Right on due to increasing ticket sales from the Mainlander push this week.

  8. At the beginning of season 1, I thought Person of Interest was an OK show. Not really outstanding in any way. Just a nice crime procedural drama but it has steadily grown into one of my favourites since the last half of season 1. Season 2 really elevated the show for me and now I think it's one of my fave shows on the air right now.

  13. I know that but I was wondering why and how before she got cured. Like how she was able to use her powers with complete control. And about the Phase 2 thing. Maybe the Phase 2 scene is supposed to be a throwaway scene but why would you say that in the first place? I thought it was going to be important later on with Pepper but it turns out it's not even necessary since she was able to control her powers like she was Nikita.
  14. Admissions are still ongoing but Iron Man 3 is putting up a huge fight on Sunday. It increased from Saturday! Speculation is that there is some mainlander effect today because other films have seen big increases as well. Here's my new article if you haven't seen it yet. Evangelion 3.0 lost a lot of admissions in pre-sales on Sunday but it will end up in 2nd this weekend. Big spike for Oblivion. If it can keep up this pace today, it will beat Finding Mr. Right for 5th. Nice bump for Tokyo Family. Holding really well. Huge fall for Drug War. A 45% drop in pre-sales is unheard of. I'm thinking it might be an error. The Croods re-appears after not being in the top 10 the whole weekend. As of this post, Iron Man 3 has already crossed 100,000. More showings are selling out today and those that didn't are 95% full which is what Avengers did back then. Did I say 9 was the record? Because now it's 10 (including the 2D morning showing). Still, 9 3D morning shows is crazy. It got more morning shows on the holiday than the opening weekend which never happens. Avengers' didn't have this number of morning shows on the May 1 holiday. It's even crazier since Trance comes out May 1.
  16. Avengers got mid 80's. TDKR got low-high 70's. No scores for DH2/TF3/OST because the site that I got these scores from was revamped in 2012 and before then they didn't have these types of scores.
  17. WOM remains very high although it's come down from that perfect score to 91%. Still above The Avengers' and The Dark Knight Rises rating.
  18. The so-called big twist was predictable. Especially when they telegraphed it in the very first minute.Other than that, it was a top notch film. Better than IM1 and way better than IM2 and The Avengers. Action, acting, plot were all extremely well done. 9/10 (A-)Did anyone else wonder how Pepper was able to control her newfound powers? No doubt that scene was badass but I found it to be slightly odd. Also, was Phase 1, Phase 2 ever explained in the movie? The bad guy was talking about how Pepper was only in phase 2. Does it mean that Pepper's able to control her powers but there might be some sort of glitch during that phase?

It will be #2 this weekend. That's a big increase for Conspirators. Amazing hold for Tokyo Family. Onto Iron Man 3... Let's analyze this hold. Iron Man 3 increased 5% while Avengers 13% on Friday. On the surface it looks like Iron Man 3 held worse but it actually held better. Avengers' gain does not include its midnights while Iron Man 3's does. Here's where the two films stand. Daily admissions (OW) Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday Total The Avengers 67,741 76,410 149,832 130,495 424,478 Iron Man 3 76,778 80,693 157,471 Gap 9,037 13,320 -136,512 -267,007 Iron Man 3 widened the gap on Friday and it is expected to increase that gap through the weekend. And the Iron Man 2 & 3 Comparison... Daily admissions (OW) Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday Total Iron Man 2 56,582 96,078 76,730 229,390 Iron Man 3 76,778 80,693 157,471 Gap 76,778 100,889 4,811 -71,919 Although it is behind in admissions, Iron Man 3 has already passed Iron Man 2's OW in only 2 days. Saturday adm. (so far) April 27 Rank Title LW TW WKD % chg QD % chg 1 Iron Man 3 -- 92,236 -- +97.7% 2 Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo -- 2,580 -- +53.6% 3 Drug War 3,008 877 -70.8% +91.5% 4 Conspirators 3,343 808 -75.8% +43.8% 5 Oblivion 6,572 708 -89.2% +157.5% 6 Finding Mr. Right 1,501 676 -55.0% +31.3% 7 Tokyo Family 672 588 -12.5% +133.3% 8 Touch of the Light 409 210 -48.7% -- 9 I Give It A Year 763 170 -77.7% -18.3% 10 We Were There: First Love -- 166 -- -4.6% Absolutely INSANE number for Iron Man 3. Biggest Saturday pre-sales ever. It had nearly identical admissions increases from Friday to Saturday pre-sales as The Avengers. I'm thinking this will hit 155,000 admissions today with a chance at 160,000. _____________________________________________________________ Deadline is reporting that Iron Man 3 made more than The Avengers on opening day but from the numbers that I dug up, it doesn't seem to be the case. Rth, can you weigh in on this?
  22. You are correct. The distributors are trying to overcompensate by throwing lots of releases to theaters but most will be shunned by viewers here.
  23. For superhero films, I would say China is a stronger market than HK.
  24. 600m is happening. The 3 main reasons why I felt that Iron Man 3 was going to make 600m OS was due to: 1. No big competition This is the biggest factor. If a Batman, Spider-Man or an Avatar were released in the same year, Iron Man 3 wouldn't have sniffed at 600m. 2. 3D This is still a huge draw overseas. Iron Man 2 grossed 318m OS so if you take into account that 3D adds 50% OS, it would sit at 477m. 3. The Avengers "X" factor This brought about a certain magic amongst the general public. It made every superhero more desirable, even the lesser ones like Thor or Captain America. There are still some other factors like market expansion and competition for Iron Man 2 (which diluted its gross) that are contributors to Iron Man 3's surge in gross.
