Joss Whedon too.

” “I actually like the first Alien vs. Predator,” he admitted. “I’m a Paul W. S. Anderson fan.”
"I don't believe in transcending the genre, I believe in the genre."
Joss Whedon has used that quote many times before. The first time I read it was in a Avengers interview talking about comic book films but he also used it before when talking about Buffy.
I agree that there are too many movies being released and with money being tight most people aren't going to go out of their way to see anything other than a guranteed crowd pleaser hence sequelitis. They go back to what they know.
No wonder Disney paid Paramount money so they wouldn't distribute The Avengers and IM3. I wonder if they made more money off those 2 movies(without doing anything) than they will off of STID?
I completely agree with you. When the news came out that J.J. was doing Star Wars it was like the wind was taken out of STID's sails. And then the guy goes on tv and talks about how he doesn't like Star Trek. I know I lost any interest in seeing this movie quickly after that. And then all the hate for J.J. on forums when the details of the film started to come out. This turned into a "Wait for WOM" movie after all of that and then the trailers were boring as hell and way too dark.
