Saw it yesterday. Meh. 7/10 (was 7.5 heading out of the theater but has dipped since). GF gave it a 5, she's indifferent on Comicbook/MCU movies (Loved BP for example and loved the old X-Men movies like X2, and she's a feminist for an example). Which is actually a solid rating. lol But really the movie had issues in the first half and definitely finished stronger than it started, which is not the norm for most comic book movies these days (It's usually strong first 2 acts meh 3rd act. I'd argue the opposite for this one). The cat was great, the the Skrulls were fun, and the soundtrack was a nice and nostalgic for 90s kids such as myself.
I thought Brie Larson was okay at best with a few solid moments. The writing was meh. It felt like the movie was just going through motions. The relationship between Fury and Danvers felt super forced and not organic at all. Was also annoyed by the "Black friend" trope but her daughter is going to be future hero so that's fine I guess. Nonetheless it followed the tired yet proven true formula of an MCU movie for the most part.
I honestly think Guardians 1, 2, Iron man, All 3 Captain Americas, Thor 1 and 3, Ant Man 1 and 2, Spider-Man Homecoming, Avengers, Avengers: Infinity War, Doctor Strange, and Black Panther were all straight up better movies in almost every aspect. I have it around Incredible Hulk level, which is good actually, just nothing special and that's okay. It's def better than Ultron, and Iron Man 2 and 3.
Also, Wonder Woman was a much better movie too if we want to compare. No Man's Land scene alone was better than most of CM.

The Village? Lmao. To this day, I've never seen a movie fall apart within the last 20 or minutes like the Village did. I think Shyamalama's best movies are Sixth Sense, Signs (even with maybe the worst plothole ever, it was overall very good imo), the Visit (underrated), and Split. Unbreakable when I first saw was underwhelming to me but I understand why it has a cult following. So 5 movies ranging from slightly above average to great is actually not bad, even if the other movies are (Happening, Lady in the Water, The Last Airbender,After Earth) well,trash. (Haven't seen Glass yet....)

Love the Rock, but no. Will Smith peaked higher than the Rock. ID4, Men in Black and sole headlining movies like I Am Legend, Hitch, I,Robot, etc. Rock is huge but not Will Smith, as of now, IMO.

I've learned after Titanic and Avatar, both of which i consider to be the most overrated movies around; and I consider T2 the GOAT action movie so i respect Cameron too. I can't count out Avatar 2. That dude just seems to connect with audiences - all time only Spielberg during his heyday could be argued as being better in this department. Wouldn't be shocked if Avatar 2 grossed like 3.5 billion or something (even though i don't think it will. I think it will drop but it just can't be counted out)

As far as the others:

That being said, I see a result in the JW-TLJ range as it is a family skewing movie and it'll be more backloaded alas animated films
- Star Wars Ep. IX: It has no hook and TLJ burned and pissed a lot of people off, not to mention it won't even sniff the hype TFA had, so if it makes more than TLJ, that's a good thing already
- Avatar 2: I think people underestimate the 200M+ OW chances for this.... Avatar may not have pop culture presence, but it was a phenomenom and interest will be huge for this. That being said, I doubt that it really blows up hardcore enough for 258, especially if it's a December opener
Next major OW record contender, should A4 not pull it off, is unquestionably Harry Potter 8 imo.
Everything you say make's sense.....But if you go back looking at the trends of US opening weekends...Something is going to break it in under 5 years. I'm going off memory here but let's see the OW Records Since 1989:
1989: Ghostbusters 2 / Batman (didn't The Last Crusade break it too? i forget)
1992: Batman Returns
1993: Jurassic Park
1995 Batman Forever
1997: The Lost World
2001: Harry Potter 1
2002: Spider-Man
2006: Dead Man's Chest (and in between this time it could be argued The Matrix Reloaded and Return of the King could have broken it - Same with Phantom Menace in 1999 cause it opened on Wednesday)
2007: Spider-Man 3
2008: The Dark Knight
2011: Harry Potter 8
2012: The Avengers
2015: Jurassic World / The Force Awakens
2018: Infinity War
In Almost 30 years the OW record hasn't lasted more than a little over 4 years. SOMETHING is going to break it, maybe even a few times in the next 4-5 years. haha. At least that's my prediction based on this

Yeah if The Lion King is nailed right, marketed right (which it will be) it's got a shot (domestic opening weekend); i wouldn't be surprised if it hit a 275 million opening or something crazy like that. I'd be shocked if it opened below 200 million. Kids, Grownups, the soundtrack. I don't wanna get TOO hyperbolic but the argument could be made The Lion King live action is like the "Force Awakens" of the animated live action adapted movies that are gonna come out.

Great point Batman did it with it's first 3 movies (Batman 89, Batman Returns, Batman Forever) and then The Dark Knight (four overall).
Ghostbusters 2 did it, Jurassic Park 1 did it, Return of the Jedi did it, Rocky 3 did it (i think). But in terms of recent times with these mega openings it is true that the recent ones have been nostalgia fueled.

I'd agree but i remember everyone here was SHOCKED when Avengers went down in 2015 with Jurassic World, then Force Awakens broke JW in December. Force Awakens gets beat 2.5 years later (tho if it stays at 258 Force Awakens retains it adjusted right? I'm sure IW will probably be like 262-263 with actuals). Now we're like "it won't be beaten anytime soon." I'd say odds are Avenger's 4, and/or Lion King have a shot at the US opening. You can't ever count out Star Wars but Episode 9 is gonna suffer in it's opening due to Last Jedi - if it's received better it'll be shown via its legs not the opening. The Opening weekend record hasn't held longer than 4 years since maybe Spider-Man 1 right? 2002 to 2006 with Dead Man's Chest. 2007- Spiderman 3, 2008- Dark Knight 2011 - Harry Potter 8, 2012 - Avengers 2015 - JW and Force Awakens 2018 - Avengers Infinity War.

Forget about the 258-263 million. I'm O.O at the 640 million worldwide opening. GOT. DAMN. I think The Lion King actually could outright break the opening weekend record next year (at worst challenge it), but that worldwide opening? What movie has a chance in hell at that in the near future? Avatar 2? o.O The next Furious movie has no shot due to diminishing US returns. Star Wars Episode 9 won't do it either.

My main criticism of the MCU was the "villain of the week" issue they were having in 75 percent of their movies (and most of the movies were STILL good so that's a testament to their execution.) They have officially fixed their villain issues with Hela, Vulture, Killmonger and now Thanos. Killmonger and Thanos are now in my top 3 comic book film villains (Heath's Joker will remain number 1 for me for a while). I didn't think Thanos was quite*** Killmonger but he was close enough and lived up to the hype (for me it was at minimum Killmonger quality of a villain or bust and Thanos lived up to the 10 years of hype so credit given). That ending (one of the best endings of all time, let's be honest, at least for a big blockbuster movie - Dark Knight, Empire Strikes Back, - I think Infinity War will ascend to that memorable level, and Thanos will no doubt become iconic based off that. It was his film featuring the Avengers. Congrats to its success.
PS- Is my bet still safe? LOL. I actually spotted Infinity War a 275 million opening and still felt i would comfortably win (Under 936 Million Domestic). Can a non fanboy/girl who is super hyped and thinking 1 billion domestic give me a realistic time frame where I can still my bud he can pay me when it's clear it won't get there?

I am not crapping on tdk trilogy , though Batman begins never got the sequel it deserved in my opinion, I am just saying that they aren’t influential AT ALL, tdk was for a few years and its influence withered way , died when the MCU rose to unprecedented levels of success and TRUE INFLUENCE with ENTIRE STUDIOS , whether its universal (dark universe), Warner (dccu, the monsters shared universe , Godzilla, king kong e.t.c) , trying and mostly failing to mimic that success.
lol. Hey man, I like Marvel/MCU. I've seen every single one of em and i cited why MCU changed the game. But so did The Dark Knight Trilogy in it's own way - You're looking at the scope of studios, fine, i said that (eveyrone's copying it = Studios that what i meant haha). I'm legit saying Filmmakers are/were influenced by what Nolan's Batman films did. Look past the bias of not liking the Dark Knight, which you basically just revealed. I think some MCU films are overrated but i have 3 out of my top 5 comic book movies from it (Black Panther, Iron Man 1, Winter Soldier, and the other one is still Marvel but not MCU in Spider-Man 2). I don't want to get in to a meaningless back and forth, and i know we are in a "everything now now now now" era of reactiveness due to the hot take / social media landscape. But saying Nolan's films don't have an influential place at the very least within the evolution of its own genre let alone the impact on modern filmmakers I listed above as a small piece from a larger size of more evidence I can point out, is just straight up lying. That's all i mean, just pm me if you wanna keep talking about this.

The dark knight opened the door for comic films being taken as legit films- the oscars suffered such a backlash from not nominating it in 2009 oscars that they changed the best picture format- if Black Panther gets nominated you will see this brought up again by multiple media outlets - you can thank the dark knight for that consideration
Batman Begins (or casino royale) is the modern blueprint for a successful reboot and an original hero movie- you can ask Jon favreau Who said he was influenced by Batman begins
The dark knight has actually been put on Best film lists- not like hyperbole Internet dork lists, like actually critic lists
Heath ledger dying helped, but don’t act like the movie wouldn’t have been a 400+ million dollar hit at the time - ledgers joker was gaining Oscar buzz pre death, there was massive hype building due to Batman begins and it’s goodwill.
Not just comic book villains but every single VILLAIN PERIOD has been put on the joker bar since the movie came out- he’s ascended to Vader, Hannibal level classic villain status.
The dark knight has become one of the most quotable movies of all time - “why so serious” “you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain” “he’s not the hero we deserve” - all quoted everywhere
A piece of music from the dark knight soundtrack is more recognizable then most if not all of MCU’s entire score catalog.
When TDKR came out it was one of the most hyped movies ever-even with avengers blowing up. It was tracking for a 180+ million opening before the theater massacre happened and even Box office mojo had it at a 214 million dollar opening pre shooting

MCU has changed things, forever(see what I see there?). MCU changed the entire landscape when it comes to cohesive on screen universe building - it’s incredible and studios are trying to copy it no doubt. It’s consistency is almost unparalleled and no franchise is bigger worldwide right now in terms of the sheer volume of films and result the mcu has evolved into- But don’t go crappin on the Dark knight trilogy acting like it didn’t change the game too. Its probably regarded as one of the best trilogies of all time (Real talk). It’s just fake news mang. Other films influenced - Skyfall (As previously mentioned)

just to add the opposite: All of my friends who've seen it accept one have said it's "badass" "amazing" "good" and 1 said he didn't like it, but he didn't like begins all that much and tdk is very linked to it (fairly known by this point so it's not a spoiler; begins is even referenced in the teaser trailer)those who said it was amazing; 3 girls (no lie)3 guys, one of which didn't want to see it cause of Anne hathawaythose who said it was badass: friend who is a dark knight bandwagoner and forgot begins even existed. A friend who loved tdk and loved this. That friends girlfriend who didn't watch batman begins.Those that liked it but felt it "missed" something: friend of mine who admitted he was too hung up on Heath ledgers joker and gave rises a 9/10 and dark knight a 9.1/10.Those that thought it was good: friend of mine who is a superman lover and HATES Batman. He called a major plot point in the movie Early on, dissed the plot holes and still thought it was good.Those who thought it was bad: my one friend, who felt it was too choppy and wants to see it again to give it a second chance and feels as though Nolan left out footage.Everyone else aka randoms: dude at a bball game the other day said it was amazing and he loved bane, random people talking about the movie saying they loved it and it was good etc.- while it's clear wom isn't on tdk's level and there is a vast amount of evidence that the film has SOLID even very good WOM. U don't make 440+ million with crappy wom. Even the phantom menace had good wom in the beginning. Although I will say it may be more "mixed" than percieved but Its not like it's a backlash or anything .Everyone keeps posting that this movie has very good WOM because of internet polls and critic ratings, but I don't see the real life translation of thisI didn't like it. My good friend (a comic book artist/nerd) didn't like it. 3-4 friends from work who have seen it have said (at best) it was pretty good, or okay (everyone else hasn't seenit yet). One of them disliked it as much as I did. 2-3 other people on FB have posted things blasting it, and I haven't seen any post the oppositeI'm not seeing it.

unless (God forbid) a shooting happens on it's opening day with the killer calling himself an expendable, there's no point of even asking if it's gonna be affectedsigh...I don't even know who I'm talking to anymore. I guess we'll have to end our discussion about this as I no longer feel you're being objective about it Anyway, I'm curious to see how you feel the shootings are impacting movies if say EX2 "only"opens in the mid $30m range or lower

A movie that had a horrific attack in its name, with a killer who referred to himself as the joker, that has been labelled as the dark knight killer, and a tragedy that has been noted as the dark knight massacre... Constant messages on facebook indicating people r afraid of going to see the movie...US media going crazy linking Batman and Shootings together, news of copycats, etc... And this movie is going to finish with 430-460 million domestcally...and some.. R disappointed??... And at the same time some claim the shooting has had no affect on the film??????? SMH

I'll agree with what was said about the joker. I'm not sure joker is more popular than batman domestically, but he is easily the most popular comic villain ever, and possibly the most iconic, sought after live action villain besides lecter and vader. Anyone who reads the comics know there's few better examples of ying and yang like those two. Plus, the joker is the easiest to market as well. If the next batman is in 3D and the joker is written and executed well by who plays him, whatever opening weekend there is at the time could be in jeopardy.

Pump the breaks. Worldwide/Overseas, yes (praying for Endgame to beat Avatar, the most overrated movie of all time) but in the US no Marvel has not "surpassed" Star Wars in the US overall. Inflation wise and rounding up Star Wars basically has 2, 1 billion dollar domestic films and 5 films in the top 20 of all time. MCU is game changing and huge, but in the end Star Wars will remain more iconic in the states at least; just my opinion. I don't believe Iron Man, Black Widow, The Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Panther, Captain America etc will be held in higher regard historically in cinema than Yoda, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Lando, and Darth Vader etc. The Original Trilogy changed the game and set the blueprint too much. Star Wars "peaked" higher in the US than MCU. If this is the most hyped movie of all time in the US it will surpass Force Awaken's 976 million adjusted figure, IMO, and it might get close but i don't see that happening. Also - Maybe i'm showing my age. The hype for Phantom Menace was so huge that many people thought it was going to slaughter Titanic, straight up. Endgame is in the convo though with Menace and Force Awakens (32 years of hype. For many that was the real sequel that people wanted to see, not the prequels even tho Menace was crazy hyped as well)
Everywhere else tho, it's a wrap. MCU has surpassed Star Wars, agreed there.
That said, watch Avatar 2-4 average 3 billion per film. Also, props for mentioning Reeves on Batman, has the potential to be a great string of films if they're done right. Batman vs Joker as the main plot has broken records twice, can't fully count it out from doing so again. haha
