  1. Yeah somehow this year summer was so crowded in Japan. IO didn't have a chance to shine. I hope FD can break $100m, but if the rates don't drastically change, to get $100m it needs around 12b yen. That's not easy.
  2. Just saw Attack on Titan in the theater here. Whatever makes the manga and anime great and popular, I didn't see it in the movie. Shallow and no character development whatsoever. As a movie it's also a mess. And it's so gory and gruesome, although that's maybe a good thing, making the terror felt real. No wonder it got bad legs.
  3. College starts in mid September or even October. School on the other hand, starts in early September.
  4. Just saw the trailer for Veteran when I saw Inside Out for the 2nd time today. I thought it looked good. With 10m+ admissions I assume it's actually a good movie? Assassination will also be released here soon, so can't wait for those two. Btw, did the success of IO increase Pixar brand's popularity in SK? I mean, will future Pixar releases benefit from this, or will they go back to its usual mediocre results (less than 2m admissions)?
  5. Yup, Ted was one of the success stories of 2012 in Japan. So not strange at all it got a lot seats. I think the dubbing was actually one of the reasons it was successful. Ted 2 won't be as big though. Also, a little bit disappointed with IM5 legs. I still hope it can cross 5b yen.
  6. My facebook, twitter and other social media feeds are full with people seeing Inside Out and loving it. WOM is kicking in. The OW here was just okay, but I hope this means the legs will be good.
  7. Assuming all goes well, it's likely that we will have at least 5 Hollywood movies over 5b yen (Cinderella, JW, MI5, Minions, BH6), as opposed to 2 last year. Even if you use calendar year instead of Japanese box office year, SW7 will replace BH6 and we still have 5 movies. Not bad at all. Also, there are already 8 Hollywood movies (including BH6) over 3b yen. I think that's the most since 2007. So Hollywood's not dead yet there.
  8. Family movies got the biggest holiday boost last week, so it's natural that they get the biggest drops this weekend. And the weekend numbers are still projections, not actuals or even estimates. So it still can change, but I believe the actuals won't be far off.
  9. Losing steam? It's projected to have the best drop among Hollywood movies from a holiday-inflated weekend. How is it losing steam? JW is still on track for $1B OS. But yeah it looks like it's gonna be close.
  10. You're joking, right? IO is holding really well. It's getting like 10x multipliers. It's the opposite of bad WOM.
  11. But that's the point. Japan almost never follows the trend. Especially for animated films. That's why these results are surprising.
  12. Wow JP3 opened with 800m yen? DIdn't realize that. Jurassic series is a strong franchise in Japan. So is Mission Impossible. I believe Mi 1 & 2 were the #1 movie of 1996 & 2000 respectively.
  13. With normal legs, maybe $60-65m? It's hard to predict the multiplier because it opened on Wednesday, which is a very rare thing in Japan. Titanic made around $200m, Avatar $180m, The Avengers $45m.
  14. Great numbers! That would make 7-8b yen possible for JW, right? 10b total would be amazing but I don't know how the WOM is.
  15. I know right? And with JW breaking out, it's like suddenly Japan finally follows the rest of the world. So weird. The Boy and the Beast is doing great. But I thought it would dominate the box office, along with Attack on Titan and Hero 2 (and Inside Out). That's why my predictions for JW and Minions were conservative. I've been following Japan box office for years, but this is one of the most unpredictable summer for me.
  16. Yay for Jurassic World! I was wrong, but I did say I wouldn't be surprised if JW topped MI5. And MI5 still opened well too. Finally non-Disney movies rule Japan. I was waaay wrong about IO though. I thought the material was very Japanese-friendly. Maybe it's just too crowded. The Boy and the Beast killed it on OW, and then Minions killed its chance at crazy legs. And then JW broke out.
  17. Depends of your defition of "breakout". I think that's pretty good.
  18. For now, I'm gonna say MI5, because MI4 did like 5b yen, while I'm not sure if the Japanese feel as nostalgic as the Americans about JW. But, I also won't be surprised if JW does bigger than MI5. It could go either way.
  19. That's a surprisingly big opening for Minions, considering it's a non-Disney non-Pixar animation. Kinda depressing too how it beat IO's OW lol. Depending on the legs for both movies, we might have a showdown between Minions and IO in Japan too.
  20. Her album is still in the top 10 (#8) on last week's Billboard 200 despite having been out for 7 months. Her 3rd single reached the top 15 on Billboard Hot 100, and her new one is climbing on the chart. How is that irrelevant? I do agree we won't hear much about her next year, but that's because time has passed since her debut song & album. I think if she releases a new chatchy song for her new album, it can be a hit again.
  21. Whoa! It has a bigger 2nd weekend than PK? Will be the 2nd member of 300 crore club then. In the US it only dropped 36%! That's unusual for a Bollywood movie, right?
  22. I was gonna say that. Usually, while very entertaining, Salman Khan's movies are often ridiculous and ignoring the script. But this one has a decent and moving story, and some good acting too. it felt more like an Aamir Khan movie. I was pleasantly surprised. Nawazuddin was perfect in this. The little girl was great too. She's super adorable.
  23. This. In fact, most of the biggest live action Japanese movies are TV adaptations. It's really interesting to see what kind of local movies that are successful in different countries. Superhero movies in the US, animation and TV adaptations in Japan, etc. In my country, Indonesia, 8 of the top 10 biggest local movies in the last 20 years are book adaptations.
  24. It's a very popular drama series. The first "season" was one of the highest rated dramas ever back in 2000. And then the first movie was a blockbuster, grossing 8.15b yen total in 2007. The 2nd "season" was also a rating success in 2014, although not as big as the first one. Also, the lead actor, Takuya Kimura is one of the biggest superstar there. So it's not surprising that the theaters have high expectation for this movie. That's why I hope IO can open big enough to get the #1 spot. Even if it doesn't, the legs will be great.
