  1. I didn’t think watchmen was perfect (the finale was poor) but overall it was a thoughtful expansion of the world with enough interesting ideas of its own. And in superhero tv/movie land, interesting ideas are like water in the desert.
  2. The internet’s losing its shit for this but Hilary swank did it first post-Oscars. Feed your guests, award ceremonies!
  3. Watched Nolan’s acceptance speech, surprised that he sounded like he was about to cry. Find myself rooting for him at the Oscars now.
  4. I think difference is that in his prime Schwarzenegger had a real knack for picking quality directors and it often paid off. Compare with his supposed descendant Dwayne Johnson who took two decades to realise that constantly picking trash eventually affects your star power
  5. I think with Fall Guy it just depends if it’s any good or not. At the moment it looks like a throwaway Netflix production and I keep having to remind myself it’s a proper cinematic non-streamer movie.
  6. I think cinema is stuck in a no-man’s land of being neither cheap entertainment nor a boutique, luxury experience (too many dickheads with phones and bad manners ensure it’s not the latter). I do think at some point operators will have to pick one.
  7. The reaction to that video was a tad OTT. Yes, it sucks that studios don’t pay you more because the film won’t do the numbers OS but, well, they’re not lying about that. It is a box office trend, albeit an unfortunate one.
  8. “X movie flopped so why aren’t we talking about it as much as Marvels???” is by far the year’s most annoying box-office meme. It’s even been done with actual hits like Wonka.
  9. Thank you for creating this spoiler thread so people too busy to see the movie can still find out if the cartoon birds managed to migrate
  10. Clooney’s directorial career is so bizarrely safe. Whatever you think of him as an actor at least he took risks and made weighty projects.
  11. I didn’t realise this was streamer production but I suppose we have to now assume anything that’s not a massive existing IP is.
  12. It’ll make the industry worse but, from the streaming platform side, I see the brutal logic. Their content combined might actually be competitive, and god knows shitty D+ needs more competition.
  13. scorcese’s last hit was almost a decade after Mann’s so perhaps the goodwill burns brighter… (flower moon and Irishman’s budgets was absurd of course. I get the prestige argument but I hate the streaming money pit model whichever auteur’s benefitting from it)
  14. Variety reporting that despite being ‘scaled back’ marketing still cost 100m. What an absolute money laundering operation Hollywood blockbusters are
  15. So what’s the DOM/INTL split on this going to be? Not being snarky, just a shocked at how big it’s apparently playing in the former.
  16. Magneto had a lot of screen time yet somehow still felt under-utilised. They never gave Fassbender (and to an extent McKelken) enough to work with. I kept willing them to centre the movies on him more, but it never really happened. That said, I’m more optimistic than most about MCU x-men. In fact I see the characters as the franchise’s salvation, without whom it’d be in real trouble.
  17. As ever I’m not the target audience, but all this talk of Kang Dynasty, Secret Wars, or whatever it’s called now, reminds me of DCEU hubris in assuming audiences will just show up for the big team up movies because… they just will, dammit.
