  1. who cares about the RT score? Are you saying this film bombing hasn’t been predictable for a long time now?
  2. Like marvels, this bombing is way too predictable to be enjoyable. The element of surprise is crucial. Always has been.
  3. I love vintage Mann but I struggle to think of another director who keeps getting shockingly big budgets based on diminishing goodwill from past glories. Ridley Scott, I suppose, but even he feels like he still has a huge hit left in him.
  4. Only found out about Zone of Interest a month ago, not sure how it caught me by surprise. Glazer is the most interesting English language director going in my opinion
  5. Nazis and Soviets worked together. War makes strange bedfellows.
  6. Patrick Willems did a good video recently charting the career trajectories of Dwane Johnson and Reynolds. TL;DW: Reynolds is probably trapped in snark mode because his other business ventures are heavily reliant on that persona for their marketing. Essentially, too much money is at stake for him to pivot to being a serious, well-rounded actor because he’s now defined as a ‘disruptive’ entrepreneur who doesn’t take himself seriously(see the ads for his gin and mint mobile)
  7. My partner’s listening to the book on audible. It’s incredible: they’ve mashed together an old version of the audiobook with what sounds like a radio play, so sometimes all the characters’ dialogue will be spoken by one British narrator and in other chapters there’ll be many different American voices. It even has the film poster as the cover, so this is regarded as the go-to version on the platform, but it’s virtually unlistenable
  8. I played fallout 4 for way too many hours so I guess I’ll give this a shot. The writing in that game was often atrocious but the world definitely has dramatic potential. The vault experiments alone could be an entire tv show.
  9. Music biopics are one the worst genres going right now but at least this one won’t be the usual rise -> fall -> rise that the others all seem to fall into. No happy ending or moment of redemption with this one.
  10. I never make predictions but a few months ago I got a lot of shit from a poster who shall remain nameless for noting how spectacular this and marvels bombing in tandem would be.
  11. Congratulations to the tv comedy The Bear which definitely a tv comedy
  12. Accidentally clicked on page 1 of this thread where “captain marvel 2” was announced and had a real WTF moment
  13. I remember the bbc website had a news story dedicated to the costume reveal. Back then, when it was much more serious and less prone to puff pieces, that was a huge deal. Man, that movie really shit the bed. It really was set up to be *huge*
  14. Majors has had the fastest rise and fall of any star I’ve ever seen. When creed 2 came out I remember thinking “how is this guy suddenly everywhere?” and now I’ll probably never see him in a movie ever again
  15. If that’s the reason that’s hilarious. I know no-one gives a shit about technical awards but I’m all for that level of pettiness.
  16. “It feels like a Ubisoft game” is not a compliment in 2023 and reviews are reflecting that. The ‘reclaim towers in a map littered with busywork icons’ felt dated a decade ago. If you love it then great, but I’m glad people are calling that shit out now.
  17. The original Wonka movie seems to be a cult classic in the US but definitely isn’t in the UK so I’m sure audiences in the latter will just take it as its own thing. I never saw the original but I did read the book, and the wonka in that generally finds children annoying so it’s funny seeing this new version of him that, apparently, loves them.
  18. And… it’s a shame they couldn’t have made something more interesting with the IP, but there you go.
  19. Trouble is RDJ’s team is pushing the post-Oppenheimer ‘3rd act of his career’ narrative (yes, it’s Oscar campaigning, but still), and going back to the marvel fold actively conflicts with that. I was cynical at first but I’d be really surprised if he took the payday now, even in a few years. Evans on the other hand…
  20. No-one said they were the main problem. But they clearly aren’t helping, and when even Disney is finally admitting they’re spending too much on movies well, maybe there’s light at the end of the tunnel
  21. Honestly, I’m fine with bloated budgets being punished even if they’re scorcese and Scott films too. The streaming model/money pit is bullshit and Hollywood seems determined to learn the hard way.
