  1. Rocky IV (1985)

Stallone reached peak after Rocky 4 release he was the top most actor with 2 300m grossers in same year! Not a easy task then but surprisingly both grossed 300m with few thousand dollars apart! Rocky 4 grossed 127m Dom and 173 OS! This was Stallone's top grossing movie in Japan with ‎¥4.75 billion ($30.5 million) until Cliffhanger which was no 1 movie of 1994 in Japan with a gross of ‎¥6.40 billion ($ 62.1 million). Rocky 4 had marginal increase in its Dom gross compared to Rocky 3(125m) whereas its OS gross had good increase compared to rocky 3 which grossed 145m! Rocky 4 was when downtrend of rocky series began! Discuss
  2. Released during summer of 1985 and Stallone was on the verge of being the no 1 star a few months later after this with Rocky 4 due for release! Pretty sure the first one was very well received which led to huge increase in its domestic gross more than 3 times of 47M grossed by First Blood. Whereas OS had comparatively lesser than 2x increase with 78M for the first and 150 for the 2nd one! Discuss!
  3. As someone who is in and loves the field of marketing, I'm always on the offensive or defensive when we talk about it. I decided to create a thread where we can discuss movie marketing and studio campaigns. What does BOT think about X movie's marketing, what is a good or bad campaign to you, and what do you expect them to do? What movies lived and died on their campaigns and what was effective or ineffective? Being on BOF since the beginning, I have seen many discussions over time and feel many here see a movie as having bad marketing just because it had 2 trailers instead of 3 or because they started pressing the campaign 1 1/2 months before release instead of 4. I feel too much emphasis is put in trailer views (TV spots get more eyes), and I feel we judge things like posters or images too hard, when the GA really doesn't care. And I feel there is a bias against Sony and Fox here, mainly because they don't have the franchises that WB and Disney do. Universal was in the same boat until Jurassic, Fast, Shades, and DM exploded, now Universal is everyone's fav. Deadpool imo had one of the best campaigns this decade but it was mocked until OW, or at least until the high tracking. Before release, SKLPOOPL and Fox's other meta tactics were laughed at here, then after release it was seen as genius. So why? We always talk about marketing, but really only in respective movie threads. So I'm creating this so we can have a thread dedicated to everything movie marketing.
  4. As you know both Moana (11/23) and Sing (12/23) are opening this holiday, both with respectively grosses. I think Sing will likely make more than Moana, for a few key reasons. 1.) Illumination is kind of a brand name now. 2.) Moana has more family competition (DS, Trolls, FB) than Sing (RO). 3.) Sing has been marketed more than Moana these past few months, and each trailer getting more views. It also seems likely that Disney will put more effort in promoting Rogue One and Doctor Strange this holiday, than Moana, similar to how TGD barely got promoted last year when The Force Awakens was about to be released. 4.) The first 20 minutes of Sing was shown at TIFF with seemingly good buzz. 5.) An almost done cut of Sing was also screened at TIFF with great reviews, most notable was Variety comparing Sing to a Pixar, WDAS, and Dreamworks level of quality. 6.) There has been minimal marketing for Moana, and Trolls had a decent OW along with Strange breaking out, and Beasts nearby, Moana may underperform, so things are looking good for Sing. My predictions for each are Moana: 65/90/305 Sing: 60/85/320 1/29/17: This club was a huge success and my first victory here. Although my predictions were way off Sing broke out big thanks to the holiday season, great weekdays, and the marketing power of Illumination. Actuals: Moana: $56.6M (3 Day)/$82M (5 Day)/$250M-$255M (projected total) Sing: $35.2M (3 Day)/$55.8M (5 Day)/$75M (6 Day)/$270M-$275M (projected total) IN (Might of the Lady Gaga pigs) YourMother ($320M Sing, $305M Moana) WrathOfHan narniadis ($300M or over for Sing) Truckasaurus BenedictL11 CaptainJackSparrow Spaghetti Hiccup23 DAJK RandomJC Krissykins fracfar CaptainH OUT (Maui Power!) 5. Latin America is a very dynamic region with expanding audience and grosses in local currency. Sadly due to shrinking exchange rates, the gross in US$ is lower in 2015 than in previous years. For box office purposes, it comprises the following markets: Mexico Central America and some of the biggest Caribbean islands (usually reported as Panama) Trinidad, Suriname and smaller Caribbean islands (usually reported as Trinidad) Colombia Venezuela Ecuador Brazil Peru Bolivia Argentina Chile Uruguay Paraguay In 2015, Mexico (US$0.9B), Brazil (US$0.8B), Venezuela (US$0.3B) and Argentina (US$0.2B) were the Top 4 in terms of US$ gross. Since it's hard to find details for the whole area, decided to open this thread to ask for help, gather numbers and find out which are the best grossing and most viewed movies in Latin America, as well as potential forecasts. Any other info exchange is welcome.
