Puss in Boots 2: The Last Wish | December 21, 2022 | 8th Most Profitable Movie of 2022

Recommended Posts

Some people here and elsewhere have argued that the Dragons TV show hurt anticipation for HTTYD2 by making it less of a theatrical "must-see." Puss will get a series on Netflix between now and when the sequel comes out, so could that also hurt Puss 2? (Or will being on Netflix mitigate that because it won't be AS readily accessible?)

The Penguins of Madagascar show didn't hurt Madagascar 3....although that was a spin off.

It certainly hurt the actually Penguins movie though

I've actually never seen the first one is it any good?

The first one is excellent in my opinion. Nothing revolutionary, but we'd be in a much better position, animation wise, if the companies were more committed to giving the kind of above average effort they gave Puss in Boots (2011). It's got a lot of beautiful, well-curated locations.

Quote

The sequel to the 2011 Oscar nominated Puss in Boots, entitled Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, will open on Friday, September 23, 2022. Currently, Puss in Boots 2 is the only wide release on that date, and Universal had the weekend already reserved for an untitled event film.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish will be directed by Joel Crawford and produced by Mark Swift, the creative team behind DWA’s 2020 smash The Croods: A New Age, which earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Picture – Animated and is the third highest-grossing feature during the pandemic with $158 million.

Oscar nominee Antonio Banderas will again voice the suave feline outlaw, as Puss in Boots discovers that his passion for adventure has taken its toll: He has burned through eight of his nine lives, leaving him with only one left. He sets out on an epic journey to find the mythical Last Wish and restore his nine lives.

This will be a sequel to the Puss in Boots film from 2011.

The film is co-directed by Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado. Crawford previously directed The Croods: a New Age, while Mercado acted as a supervising director on the kids series Harvey Beaks. Both filmmakers have extensive experience animating feature films, not only for Dreamworks but for Hollywood films in general.

In the event that The Last Wish maintains its September 23rd release date, the film, while having the slight advantage of releasing first, will be facing a challenging box office battle as Across the Spider-Verse Part One is slated for release two weeks after.

EDIT: I thought the thread was open 😭

Those of you yearning for Shrek 5 might want to keep an eye on this. Assuming that families won't just wait for streaming again like they have done for animated movies in the new world, if it does well we might see the green ogre finally return to the big screen. The 11 year gap certainly won't help, nor will Shrek not being taken seriously as a brand in years. This will probably top out at $150M-$200M worldwide, but there's always a chance it could be a hit.

Closer to 9 years :Venom:

The 2015 Dreamworks restructuring was brutal, to say the least. It caused both this movie and Madagascar 4 to get canned. The only reason why the former eventually came back to life was likely Chris Meledandri.
