I personally think it's a bit overhyped.  It has a lot going for it and is a solid entry in the genre but overall I felt like it was much more tame than I was expecting.  Had some really cool aspects, in particular the opening credits and the acting was phenomenal.  Vera Farmiga is great in whatever she's doing.  I definitely prefer these kinds of old ghost stories to torture porn/gore and this is easily the best horror film in the past year or so (though I'm not sure that's saying too much).

Not willing to praise it as highly as some of the others because I thought it was slow to start and it didn't hold its intensity throughout but definitely worth checking out.  I think audience atmosphere has a lot to do with it as well and my audience laughed at several parts that kind of killed the mood.  So in my opinion, a solid B+.

Second best exorcism scene of the year behind Jonah Hill's!

I usually don't like modern horror movies. When jump scares don't land for me it's because the film doesn't bother creating tension or building the world of the story (first Paranormal Activity was a victim of this, IMO). But The Conjuring has tension and atmosphere in spades. Perhaps it's just a breath of fresh air to see a silly haunted house tale amidst painfully serious found-footage movies but I totally fell for it. Everything in the film is laid out so clearly that I became invested in the plight of this poor family and particularly the ghosthunters, who felt like real, fleshed out characters. It's a gorgeous film in terms of set design and cinematography but also in pacing and knowing when to push the scares forward.

The Conjuring scared the ever-living piss out of me and I highly recommend you go watch it.

B+ or 7/10 for now. I feel the same as Ryne1040

Insidious is scarier in some parts but they are about even. I can't remember what I gave Insidious.

well it is getting very good RT scores - 83% positive - for both top critics and all critcs...

so now RIPD is dead to me and I will see RED 2 and this today!

But I think what the three of us are saying is that it is good and it is very scary in some parts but overall it's just a good movie not a fantastic one

I'm not a huge horror junkie like you, so when I saw the reviews, I expected to be BLOWN AWAY, Quarantine style, Ring style, PA style. I wasn't. It was just a very good exorcism movie, with a touch of Amityville

REC blew Quarentine (the remake) away. That's probably the best found footage horror movie out there. As far as The Conjuring, like I wrote on Monday I'd give a solid B+. It has incredible camera angles, tension, and atmosphere. The acting is also of a much higher calibre than usual horror fare. It wasn't the scariest horror movie ever, won't give me nightmares, etc. I just left the theater and thought it was fun like Insidious. I also thought it was similar to The Lady In Black. I'm desensitized to horror movies though.

I just find the Exorcist distubing. Movies like The Descent,The Ring, etc don't do anything for me either. I guess the last horror movie to truly scare me going into it was the remake of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre in 2003. I was a lot younger then too, but haven't had that feeling watching a horror movie in a long time. The remake of The Hills Have Eyes was also pretty damn disturbing due to that one scene (if you've seen it, you know the one I'm talking about). It's pretty much the same with going to Halloween Horror Nights at Univesal. I fucking love it, but it doesn't scare me. I just enjoy the experience.

Nowadays things have changed but Childs Play 2 used to terrify me when I was a kid because I hate dolls. That animatronic is something else still to this day. I can't count the amount of times I've seen the original trilogy now though. Watch them every Halloween.

Anyway will probably catch this again this weekend with another full house. Then bring on Who's Next and Insidious 2.
