Spielberg is easily one of the best simply because he can pull off any genre and turn them into near masterpieces. I doubt many will agree though.

QT and Cameron. They have small filmographies but also very few real few stinkers. Directors who make tons of movies tend to stink up a number.

Spielberg is the best ever.

Scorcese, Coppola, Hitchcock and Clint Eastwood round out the top 5 directors of all-time for me.

What has Polanski and Lynch and Von Trier done to make them one of the 5 best? Just curious.

but we're talking the best of all time.  David Lynch is too weird and esoteric imo to be one of the best.  Polanski is good no doubt, but I don't know, all time?

This. One day, critics will call Blanchett best actress of all times and people in 2043 will go "Who Hell That?" My point is, Best Ever is deeply connected with household recognition. Aka movies that have been seen by many and actors and directors who are known by their name and not mostly for one role or one specific movie.

I would have Bay in my top 10 of all time.

he'll be remembered for sure. Most likely won't get on any critics top list but at least people won't scratch their heads when they read his name unlike PTA and the likes whose movies only snobs watch.
