so movies with success in Israel

Noah a movie about an Israeli

300: Rise of an Empire a movie about an astonishing defeat of the Persian army

I have to strongly disagree here. Coming up with reasons in hindsight you can make everything look easily predictable in this way from a geo-political standpoint, but looking more closely:

300 ROA was a sequel to a film that became cult hit in Israel after its theatrical release (but wasn't particularly successful in cinemas).

Captain America is a sequel to a film about a guy fighting Nazis which didn't make that much. The second film had a nice increase just like everywhere (although not nearly as high as in some other places) else following the Avengers and Iron Man 3, both of which made much more than Captain America 2. Also, keep in mind that that of the 3 Superhero films we have had this year, CA 2 will make the least.

Noah was the one that I think actually had a special advantage, but not because he was "Israeli" (which isn't really true), but because it is based on a very famous story that every Israeli knows.

Films last year that made more than any of the above films:

1) Argo

2) Django

3) The Croods

4) Iron Man 3

5) Fast 6

6) Monsters University

7) Despicable Me 2

8) Grown Ups 2

9) Smurfs 2 (more than those 3 films combined...)

10) We're The Millers

11) Gravity

12) Frozen

13) Catching Fire

Maybe you should find special Israeli connections for all of these as well...

I don't know why some people can't refrain from seeing Jews like ill-advised people with second thought, particularly in Europe..Some people really need a doctor,it's more than an obsession,it's an illness. What surprises me is the weak Maleficent numbers, after weak Frozen numbers we can say Israelis really don't like fairy tales..

Will Exodus likely be huge here? I'd imagine Moses is one the most important figures in Israel's history.

It will probably do very well, but it probably could have done better close to Noahs release date. Just before Passover, the biggest national holiday, which commemorates the events in the film.

I wanted to check up on this but I couldn't find a proper list of Fairy Tale films, so I may have missed something, so tell me if I should add/remove something: (Grey is films that I am not sure if they should be there)

  Israel Dom % of DOM
Alice In Wonderland 4.92 334 1.473053892
Black Swan 1.55 107 1.448598131
The Princess And The Frog 1.33 104 1.278846154
Tangled 2.4 201 1.194029851
Enchanted 1.33 128 1.0390625
Brave 1.74 237 0.7341772152
Frozen 2.34 401 0.5835411471
OZ: TGAP 1.37 235 0.5829787234
Jack The Giant Slayer 0.358 65 0.5507692308
Snow White And The Huntsman 0.822 155 0.5303225806
Hansel And Gretel: WH 0.259 56 0.4625
Red Riding Hood 0.169 38 0.4447368421

The percent for all films is about 1%, so Live action films clearly under perform here,. But Animated films, besides Frozen seem to do OK.

Yeah, Black Swan should NOT be there.  :D

As for the Frozen ratio - well, it was much bigger domestically than all the others, so it's justifiable. The hard number itself seems quite good. AIW is gigantic, but then, it was like that worldwide - the first big post-Avatar 3D flick and everyone got suckered into making that utter crap into a billion dollar movie.

you are right nothing extraordinary

the first 300 was astonishing in Greece

UP was extraordinary in Venzuela (waterfall)

these 3 movies  (and the obvious) connection caught my attention

I called Noah an Israeli to be funny (sorry if you don't see humour there)

Comparing Frozen to fairy tale films that made much less overall might make it look good, but if you compare it to other blockbuster animations its total looks much worse. here is a comparison with all the animated films that made at least 600M WW since 2007:

over 600M WW since 2007

Israel gross WW gross % of WW gross
Shrek 4 4.52 753 0.6
Madagacar 3 4.51 747 0.6
Toy Story 3 4.42 1063 0.42
Up 3.6 731 0.49
Ice Age 3 3.52 887 0.4
Ice Age 4 3.46 877 0.39
Ratatouille 3.08 624 0.49
KFP 3.06 632 0.48
KFP 2 3 666 0.45
Despicable Me 2 3 971 0.31
Shrek 3 2.77 799 0.35
Frozen 2.34 1245+ 0.19
Monters U 2.17 744 0.29

It is by far the worst in percent, but it's also almost last in total gross as well.

Comparison of big comedy sequels:

Wk Hangover 2 Grown Ups 2 Johnny English 2 22 Jump Street
  26/05/2011 11/07/2013 13/10/2011 12/06/2014

1: 519K/519K 348K/348K 309K/443K 362K/362K
2: 461K/1.18M 287K/779K 214K/838K
3: 357K/1.83M 235K/1.2M 135K/1.04M
4: 235K/2.16M 194K/1.52M 113K/1.19M
5: 184K/2.42M 167K/1.8M 76K/1.33M
6: 132K/2.67M 108K/2M 57K/1.4M
7: 107K/2.84M 65K/2.13M 35K/1.45M
8: 69K/2.95M 26K/2.17M 26K/1.45M

10: 31K/3.09 13K/2.24M 10K/1.49M
TOTAL: 3.17M 2.3M 1.51M
PROJECTED

If 22 Jump Street can get some good legs, which I believe it can, then it can have a similar run to Grown Ups 2.

Looks like 22JS is heading towards the higher end of comedies, so I added Ted to the comparison as it seems to go nicely with the way 22JS has been doing so far.
