Indian Box Office Thread | Jawan overtakes Pathaan, becomes highest grossing Indian movie of 2023

Recommended Posts

Avengers - Endgame has come and dominated the box office like no other recent release but it can be said the numbers have come with the help of South markets where no Hindi film really works in a big way. The only exception is Sholay (1975) which was bigger than the local releases of the time.

Butr what really makes sad reading is that if we take out the South Indian markets (Nizam / Andhra, Mysore / Karnataka and Tamil Nadu / Kerala) and keep to the places where Hindi films do the most business (actually should be used to do the most business now) then the top two are not Hindi films now.

Below are the first week totals from Mumbai, Delhi / UP, East Punjab, Rajasthan, CP Berar, CI, West Bengal, Bihar, Assam and Odisha and Avengers - Endgame has the second highest numbers from these markets with 186.71 crore nett. Bahubali - The Conclusion leads with 233.85 crore nett which is also not a Hindi film. Tiger Zinda Hai is best Hindi film but collections are 6 crore nett less than Endgame. It also has to be noted that most of the Hindi films have had major holidays somewhere in their first weeks.

Below are the first week collections without the South Indian markets (these markets have bigger markets for local films and Hollywood also has potentially bigger markets than Hindi films).

1. Bahubali 2 - The Conclusion (2017) - 233.85 crore

2. Avengers - Endgame (2019) - 186.71 crore

3. Tiger Zinda Hai (2017) - 180.90 crore

4. Sultan (2016) - 176.45 crore

6. Sanju (2018) - 173.96 crore

Spider-Man films in India

1. The Amazing Spider-man 2 - ₹80.27cr

2. The Amazing Spider-man - ₹79.28cr

3. Spider-Man: Homecoming - ₹73.68cr

4. Spider-Man 3 - ₹66.27cr

Inflation adjusted S-M 3 would be ₹175cr Approx. TASM and TASM 2 will be ₹128cr & ₹112cr Approx.

I am hoping for ₹150cr ($22mn) Approx from Far From Home.

Well, Last time Homecoming was squashed between Tubelight of Salmaan, just after Eid and Munna Michael released on the same day. Also, Homecoming had too much of High school and less action.

This time though Salman's Bharat should almost be out of gas by 7 July, even if it is SuperHit.  Kabir hits the Cinema in late June, but it should earn most of by time FFH releases, nothing big seems near its release.

It really does have the potential to hit 150 or 200 Cr.

Tube light was dead by the time Homecoming released. It was affected by Jagga Jasoos + War for Planet of Apes.

Not sure about Indian local film, but it seem the local films are weaker this year round. Any new indian blockbuster that could be a breakout?

Actually 1st quarter has been great for Bollywood. Uri The Surgical Strike did breakout with brilliant trending.

Bharat is upcoming big film, if get appreciation, may go as high as ₹600cr GROSS i.e. ~$87mn.
