Indian Box Office Thread | Jawan overtakes Pathaan, becomes highest grossing Indian movie of 2023

Among these 2 zero would have posted bigger loss right considering it didn't even touch 100cr in India?

Zero actually didn't lose any money as SRK was producer, so he basically worked for free for 2 years.

Zero budget is lower than TOH so bit lower loss in absolute.

TITANIC run in INDIA

If the following assumptions are true, Titanic had one heck of phenomenal run in India. Highest 1st Week Earner of 1998 was 'Chote Miya, Bade Miya', then 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' which was highest grosser for that year.

Day 1: Titanic released on 6th March, 1998 in India in 11 Theater's.

Opening Week-end: Titanic opened to $101,933 in 11 Theatres. [Variety, Don GROVES]

After its eighth consecutive $40 million-plus frame, “Titanic” (cume: $647 million) sailed into sell-out seshes in India, sinking $101,933 from 11 ports, while posting record-busting bows in Lithuania and Estonia. James Cameron’s epic has become Argentina’s top grosser, passing BVI’s “The Lion King,” and is on course to pass “Die Hard 3” to become Japan’s top grosser. The boat pic has just passed Gallic title “Les Visiteurs” to become the top-grossing pic ever, with an $82.8 million cume, in France, which staged the most interesting contest at this weekend’s overseas box office.

Opening Week: Titanic earned $203k in first five days and $72k in next two days, ending the 1st week with $275k.
In its latest conquests, the Fox Intl./Paramount behemoth garnered $203,000 in five days at just 11 theaters in India, and had equally dazzling maiden voyages in Lithuania and Estonia. The most lucrative market, by a narrow margin, is France, where “Titanic’s” $83.7 million now reigns as the top earner in history, beating “Les Visiteurs"

After One Month:  Titanic had grossed roughly $1.35m with total footfall of 2M+ [Generally, ATP was 20-25 cents but I have accounts of where ATP for Titanic were 30-35 Rs. (little lower than 1$ during those times) & Black Market Price of 200 Rs.] In its first five weeks here, the film, in the original English version, has been seen by more than two million people including many with little or no English.

Two Months Later, It ended up with $2.45m (Reported by Indian outlet-reddiff)

After 30 Weeks, in it's 6th month of release in India, it had reached $5m. image.png

Both of above were reported by Indian News Channel so it maybe in Nett. Converting into Gross - we get to $8.75m (Conversion done by @charlie Jatinder)

In meantime in August, Godzilla that had earned $1m in opening week, earned $443k in 2nd week. The big lizard swallowed $443,000 on 123 Theatres in India

Some Landmarks via searching for India.

Sep 11, 1998, In India Titanic hit $10m. Last weekend, the super-liner grossed $862,000 with contributions from Japan (where the cume is an astounding $186.9 million), Brazil ($69.2 million) and India ($10 million)

1st Week of Oct, 1998. In India, Titanic cume becomes $10.8m. Last but not least, “Titanic” cruised on to $1.214 billion, still earning coin in Japan ($191 million) and India ($10.8 million).

The above is last News of Titanic (from India) and then FOX declares $12.4m gross from India in Dec, 1998. @Bruce This is all I could find in Variety, New York Times, Hollywood Reporters and few old Archived Indian sites. Final cume of $12.6m was put in Magazines of Variety International.

TITANIC ERA AVERAGE PRICES - Japan currently has the highest average ticket price ($8.72), followed by Sweden ($7.80), the Netherlands ($6.08), the U.K. ($5.96) and Germany ($5.85). The U.S. average is $4.65. At the other end of the spectrum, the price of admission in India is just 20 cents. The Indian Movie average price is about right but that ain't true for Hollywood movies.

I miss the old Prasads IMAX. It was a great theater back then. Now its just another theater with shit parking. The owners refused to upgrade the IMAX screen and let it fall into disrepair.

Good news by the way grim. Even though they aren't IMAX anymore. They have upgraded the projection to DUAL BARCO LASER with DP4K-60L

Living through the run of Titanic, even in my small city, was crazy. There were mile long lines to get into the theater.

Pushpa is on a dream run in Gujarat and Maharashtra. Also helping that there is literally no competition in sight.

Week 1 - ₹175.6cr

Week 2 - ₹57.2cr

Week 3 - ₹48.5cr

Week 4 - ₹19.7cr

Week 5 - ₹10.5cr

Week 6 - ₹8cr Approx

Total - ₹319.5cr

It can probably do another ₹8-10cr, will reach Top 15 grossers of all time. After 1st week, a ₹250cr closing felt like it and now this.

Pushpa (Hindi) run has been phenomenal. Probably the only 100c nett film to reach the milestone with after a low opening(3c).
