Gunday had a strong opening in most places in India with around 60-65% collections on average. The opening was very good at multiplexes and the single screens that opened early.

The start for Gunday was better in North and Central India than Mumbai circuit and though Mumbai was good it was not as strong as places like Delhi/UP or CI. It was the opposite for Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram - Leela the last Ranveer Singh starrer which opened best in Mumbai circuit.

It is Valentine's Day today so the film should get a little boost from that at multiplexes with better collections in the  evening and late afternoon than a normal Friday. Gunday is on course to put up a very good first day total and if it sustains it may well emerge the first hit of 2014.

Gunday is set for a very good first day as collections are looking to be around the 14 crore nett mark as multiplexes in most areas have recorded excellent collections.

The film is collecting very well on day one in the Northen, Central and Eastern markets while Mumbai and South is underperforming a little bit. Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram - Leela grossed around 15 crore nett on day one and there is a possibility of similar collections but a lot will depend on evening collections in Mumbai circuit.

Gunday is almost sure to gross better numbers than Goliyon Ki Raasleela in North but there could be a relatively big gap in Mumbai as Goliyon Ki Raasleela did extraordinary business in Mumbai due to phenomenal numbers in Gujarat. The multiplex collections have also been aided a little by Valentine's day while in single screens Valentine's day has little affect.

Gunday had very good first day grossing around 15 crore nett as per early estimates. The film had solid collections all over with collections in East Punjab beating the biggest opener of 2014 Jai Ho due to there being a holiday in Punjab state, West Bengal and Assam also saw similar collections to Jai Ho though other circuits were lower.

The collections are very good for a film like Gunday and it was multiplexes with better collections than single screens even though it was an action film.

This was due to two factors the first being that multiplexes got benefit of Valentines Day and second being that the cast has limited face value for the single screen audience. The single screen collections were good but for this type of film they had potential to be better. It will be interesting to see what happens over the weekend as Saturday growth will be tough as multiplexes might not show growth but Sunday should be up and a 40 plus weekend looks easily achievable for the film.

The film was also had a release in Bengali with the screen count unlikely to be over 50 screens..

Gunday Saturday early estimates : 11.5-12.5 cr (from Indicine)

"Gunday has witnessed drops in the range of 20-28% at various centres across India, with both single screens and multiplexes slowing down considerably on Day 2.

The reason for the drop could be because Friday was a holiday in parts of the country for Guru Ravidass Jayanti and also Valentine’s day, which tends to help business in Urban centres. Also, Gunday was running at 60% plus occupancy on Friday, which is quite high considering all factors like star cast and screen count.

As per early estimates based on collections from a few centres, the Saturday business of Gunday is likely to be around Rs 11.5 – 12.5 crore. The two day total of the Yash Raj Films’ production is around 28 crore.

Gunday is likely to see a decent jump in business on Sunday, but the total is unlikely to be much higher than Friday. First weekend business is likely to be around 45 crore net."

Wondering what happened to Tarun Mansukhani after Dostana. Dostana 2 seems to be stuck in developmental hell - he has claimed to have finished the script like 5 times now.

Koochie Koochie Hota Hai even had a full trailer released 3 and a half years ago and nothing. Karan Johar seems to have moved on to other projects in the interim. Doubt if either of those 2 movies will see the light of day. But then again, prior to last year I would have asked the same thing about Abhishek Kapoor who seemed to disappear after "Rock On" only to come back with "Kai Po Che" 5 years later.

Gunday producer figures,

16.12 + 12.63 (-21.65%) + 15.18 (+20.2%) = 43.93cr

About 9cr less than Ram-Leela and about 16.75cr less than Jai Ho. So 100cr looks tough.

Ram-Leela like legs take it to 97cr.

Jai Ho legs take it to 85cr.

Probably will end up in the middle somewhere close to 90cr.

Yeah Dharam seems to be busy with a few films : Gutka, 2 States, Ungli, Humpty Sharam ki Dulhaniya(not kidding, lol. It's on their site) and Shuddhi. They released 11 films in 5 years since Dostana. So just 2 per year. With these 5 films in queue Dostana 2 could not see light till 2016. That's a 10 year gap. Mansukhani will have moved on to sell plastic toys in bombay locals by then.

I certainly hope AB and JA are not playing hard to get with their dates. Without franchise films like this they have no hope. They too would be selling plastic in bombay locals.

Gunday 4-day 49.7cr

Will be about 62-63cr by end of week 1.

Can reach 90cr if it has a Ram-Leela like drop in week 2,

62.5 + 17.5 + 6.5 + 2.5 + 1 = 90cr

but looks tough.

86-88cr is more like it.

Gunday made just 8.15cr in the 2nd weekend.

10-day gross is 71.23 cr

Will fail to touch even 80cr after a 43cr ow.

about 76cr lifetime, 63.08(week 1) + 11.5(week 2) + 3 (rest of the run).

Pretty sorry state of the Indian film industry as most successful films have a similar front-loaded run. Quality films don't have a path to success. Takes money and marketing to make money (mostly off below average products). When will the bubble burst?

Queen seems to have picked up a lot at the box office thanks to good word of mouth. Kangana Ranaut looking to become a bankable actress, who would have predicted that 3 years ago.

She had always been talented..but bad choices of movies...brilliant in Woh Lamhe...quite good in Tanu Weds Manu...but well Queen is altogether on different level...both as performance and as movie.
