Thor: Ragnarok' Defies Gravity In India, Catches 'Spider-Man Homecoming' With 72 Cr./$11.1M Gross

If you had told me two weeks ago that Thor: Ragnarok would soon match the box office heights reached by Spider-Man: Homecomingduring its India release this past July, I’d have told you that you sounded like your head was full of spider webs.

After all, the best performing film in India for the hammer-wielding Marvel superhero, Thor: The Dark World, had earned barely half of what Spider-Man: Homecoming had collected.

And yet now the Thor threequel has caught Homecoming’s ₹72.2 crore / $11.1 million lifetime India box office total, and will surpass it this weekend. After a ₹34 crore ($5.2 million) debut weekend, it added an additional ₹30 crore through its second weekend, and an additional ₹8 crore through the Thursday, the last day of its second week.

If Thor: Ragnarok can pick up an additional ₹3 crore this weekend—a realistic target—it will nudge past Homecoming and also Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation to claim the rank of 13th highest-grossing Hollywood film in India’s history. Another ₹1 crore will put it beyond Marvel’s first Avengers film for the all-time number 12 spot.

JL opened in India to about 51.6m in local currency on its opening day.

For comparision Thor 3 had an OD of 77.3m. Thats a decrease of 33% for JL

BvS opened to 80m OD so JLis running 35% behind.

Now to be fair to JL, it was unable to get a dubbed release in India as they submitted the clearance documents late so the number is slightly muted. How much it is muted is impossible to know

BvS had also opened on a national holiday (Holi).

Post-BvS, WB has messed up DCEU exposure/awareness raising in India to a degree I guess. Many DCEU YouTube videos have comments like "WB why didn't you release dubbed versions of Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman in India?" "I wanted to watch Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman in Hindi but couldn't" etc. The fact that SS and WW overperformed regardless makes it very impressive for them. Outside of the Mouse House, I think Sony is the studio which goes all out targeting India, which is partly the reason for Spidey being top dog for a decade.

'Thor: Ragnarok' Nabs 14th Place On India's Top Hollywood Import List With ₹76 Cr./ $11.8M

Thor: Ragnarok started the week by adding another trophy to its collection, climbing India’s all-time box office rankings ladder past its MCU mate Marvel’s the Avengers to take 14th place on the all-time top-grosser chart among Hollywood movies released in the territory.

The comic book “God of Thunder” hero has extended its impressive run to a multiple of 2.38 times its ₹32 crore opening weekend gross. It recently became the fifth Marvel film to reach the top 20 among Hollywood’s biggest earners in India. If we include the non-Marvel Sony-produced Spider-Man movies, 8 of Hollywood’s top 20 India grossers are based on Marvel comic book characters.

Thor: Ragnarok surprised Indian box office watchers by surpassing a Spider-Man movie in the all-time rankings. No other solo superhero film has ever before come close to matching or beating a Spider-Man film there; only the two multi-hero Avengers movies have accomplished that feat.

Thor: Ragnarok also stands as the year’s second highest-grossing Hollywood movie behind Fate of the Furious, which took in ₹128 crore / $19.8 million back in March.

A bit muted tbh , also they kinda dropped the ball by not dubbing Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman.

Watched Thor:Ragnarok last thursday it was a 6.30 pm show and online bookings were dull hardly 10 seats were booked but the walk-ins were pretty good i could see 40%-50% theater full.

This is great for a movie on its second thursday.

JL had pretty good opening but couldnt sustain in weekdays.
