Weekend Actuals 8/9-8/11

Elysium's a bonafide disappointment. Damon and the director of District 9 should've been a compelling sell, but they never replicated D9's amazing viral campaign and after a year of dystopian sci-fi actioners (Oblivion, After Earth, Pacific Rim) the film couldn't stand out.

Brutal drops across the board. The 'best' drop from holdovers is still 41.6% and thats from a 350m grosser which had stablished itself at around 35% in the last two weeks. I think perhaps even 'family competition' is secondary compared to the massive loss of screens due to four 3000+ theatre releases.

It's Matt Damon's best opening weekend as a lead after the Bourne Ultimatum and the Bourne Supremacy.

So MoS went into dollar theaters and possibly a re-run on IMAX Labor Day weekend?

It is having a mini-dollar theater run right now. It is still running in main theaters while also moving to some dollar theaters. Probably a few more dollar theaters this week, then it depends on how well Mortal Instruments does.

MOS with a nice jump ... even with an IMAX expansion if Mortal Instruments bombs, I still don't see more than 292 at this point ... more likely 290-291.

Elysium ... ooh that is ugly considering I felt that it was a sure thing for 35 if not 40+ a month ago.
