Walt Disney
This is a vote to determine the best movie per year from 1930 to 2012. We will not vote for 2013 since the year is not finished yet. Even if everyone else thinks that a movie is horrible, but you feel the movie is the best movie released that year, then vote for it. The Rules: 1) Vote by either PM'ing me your ballot or posting your ballot in this thread. You can do both, but your vote will only be counted once. 2) You can only vote for 1 movie per year. 3) The year of release will be what is listed on IMDB. 4) The movie must be released in the movie theater. No made for TV movies are allowed unless they also had a documented theatrical release. 5) Foreign films are allowed to be voted on. 6) Animated Films are allowed to be voted on. Each movie will get 1 point for each vote. There will only be 1 winner for each year. For any ties, we will have tie-breaker run-offs. Voting ends October 20, 2013 at 11:59 PM Eastern time. Any ballots received at midnight Oct. 21 Eastern or afterwards will not be counted. If you do not want to vote for a movie for certain years, then you don't have to. You can vote for as many or few years as you want to. If you only want to submit a ballot with 1 movie, then that is fine. All votes must be in this format: Year: Movie (ex. 1930: All Quiet on the Western Front). Please use that format for every year you decide to vote for. rukaio101
Here's a full list of the years involved to save people having to type it all out. 1930:1931:1932:1933:1934:19351936:1937:1938:1939:1940:1941:1942:1943:1944:1945:1946:1947:1948:1949:1950:1951:1952:1953:1954:1955:1956:1957:1958:1959:1960:1961:1962:1963:1964:1965:1966:1967:1968:1969:1970:1971:1972:1973:1974:1975:1976:1977:1978:1979:1980:1981:1982:1983:1984:1985:1986:1987:1988:1989:1990:1991:1992:1993:1994:1995:1996:1997:1998:1999:2000:2001:2002:2003:2004:2005:2006:2007:2008:2009:2010:2011:2012: I'll put my own entries down soon.
luna
3) The year of release is the original United States premier of the movie. The film is not eligible to be voted on in other years. 5) Foreign films are allowed. If they were released in the U.S., then they belong to their U.S. premier year. If they were never released in the U.S., then the year used is the year they were released in their country of origin. it can be difficult to figure out release patterns, especially for older movies, so i think it would be easier to simply use whatever IMDB says. rukaio101
Finally finished my own entries. The ones left blank are because I've never seen a film released from that year. I'm using Wikipedia dates, FYI, so it may be less accurate than IMDB. 1930: Animal Crackers 1931: 1932: 1933: Duck Soup 1934: 1935 1936: 1937: 1938: 1939: 1940: The Great Dictator 1941: 1942: Casablanca 1943: 1944: 1945: 1946: It's a Wonderful Life 1947: 1948: 1949: 1950: Rashomon 1951: Strangers on a Train 1952: High Noon 1953: Peter Pan 1954: Rear Window 1955: Lady and the Tramp 1956: 1957: 12 Angry Men 1958: Vertigo 1959: Rio Bravo 1960: Psycho 1961: Yojimbo 1962: To Kill a Mockingbird 1963: The Birds 1964: Dr Strangelove 1965: For a Few Dollars More 1966: The Good, The Bad and the Ugly 1967: In the Heat of the Night 1968: 2001: A Space Odyssey 1969: The Wild Bunch 1970: MASH (tough call between this and Patton) 1971: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory 1972: The Godfather 1973: High Plains Drifter 1974: Blazing Saddles 1975: Monty Python and the Holy Grail (Very difficult to pick between this, Jaws and One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest) 1976: The Omen 1977: Star Wars 1978: Halloween 1979: Monty Python's Life of Brian 1980: Airplane (Although Blues Brothers, Empire Strikes Back and The Shining made this almost impossible to choose) 1981: Raiders of the Lost Ark 1982: The Thing 1983: Star Wars VI: Return of the Jedi 1984: Nightmare on Elm Street 1985: Back to the Future 1986: Aliens 1987: Evil Dead II (Hated having to pass over Princess Bride and The Untouchables) 1988: Die Hard 1989: The Killer 1990: Goodfellas 1991: Silence of the Lambs 1992: Braindead (Hard Boiled, Porco Rosso, Reservoir Dogs, Unforgiven, Muppets Christmas Carol (shut up), A Few Good Men, Aladdin and Bram Stoker's Dracula made this one of the most difficult years to pick) 1993: Jurassic Park 1994: Shawshank Redemption 1995: The Usual Suspects 1996: Fargo 1997: Princess Mononoke 1998: Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (Honestly had to flip a coin to pick between this and The Big Lebowski) 1999: The Sixth Sense (Why, 1999? Why must you have The Matrix, Fight Club, Toy Story 2 and South Park all in one year? Any of those films would've taken the top spot in 2000 or 2001.) 2000: Chicken Run 2001: Spirited Away 2002: Ice Age 2003: Kill Bill Volume 1 (Passed over Return of the King, Finding Nemo and The Room (*snigger*) because Tarantino needed a mention on this list) 2004: The Incredibles 2005: Wallace and Gromit and the Curse of the Were-Rabbit (yes seriously) 2006: Pan's Labyrinth 2007: Hot Fuzz 2008: The Dark Knight 2009: Summer Wars 2010: How to Train Your Dragon 2011: The Raid: Redemption 2012: The Avengers At the moment, it looks like Pacific Rim will take my 2013 spot but..... actually, no I doubt anything will beat it. I really loved that film. Anyway, some really difficult choices there. 1975, 1980, 1992, 1998 and 1999 were probably the most difficult (as I already pointed out in brackets). Surprised that none of the Wachowski's films made it on the list, since they're one of my favourite directors. I thought Speed Racer was a lock to take 2008 (yes seriously), but then I discovered that Dark Knight was released that year instead of 2009 like I thought and I had to give it to that. Other than that, a pretty good spread. Two Ghibli's, a Tarantino, a John Woo and, to my own surprise, Two Aardmans (although Wallace and Gromit was a deadlock by virtue of being my favourite film (shut up)) all made it on the list despite a lot of them not having a deadlock on their position. The only films that had a deadlock were 1957, 1965, 1966, 1999, 2009 and 2012. Very tempted to give 2012 to Wolf Children (my joint second favourite film with Summer Wars) but I decided not to since it hasn't been released worldwide yet and The Avengers deserved a mention more. Also, I'm very surprised that I'm not the only one to give 1992 to Braindead.

Walt Disney
it can be difficult to figure out release patterns, especially for older movies, so i think it would be easier to simply use whatever IMDB says. That's fair enough. I will update my OP to reflect that. If anyone runs into a conflict about the year, just send me a message and I'll clarify which year the movie counts for. Also, don't Edit your list after I have liked it. Instead, just reply with a separate list with the changes that you've made, or the movies that you now have for years that you previously left blank. For the purposes of this list, is it considered a 1942 or 1943 release?

Sims
"3) The year of release will be what is listed on IMDB." Casablanca is a 1942 movie according to IMDb. Well that's a dumb rule. Lots of films screened at random festivals one year and weren't released theatrically until one or even two years later. IMO, it should be by the year they were eligible for Academy consideration.
baumer
This is interesting but how can many of us determine what films were the best in years where we have seen 1 or 2 films? Can you guys really give your opinion as to what the best film of 1935 was? Have you really seen that many films from that year?
