Gotham: Batman's Commissioner Gordon Getting FOX TV Series

On the same night Marvel launched Agents of SHIELD, it's been revealed that DC is making another big step in TV, with Commissioner Gordon getting his own live-action series, reveals Deadline. Following a bidding war, the Warner Bros. TV-produced series, called Gotham, has ended up at FOX. Showing what a big deal Gotham is, it's been given a straight-to-series order, bypassing the pilot stage.
The series will focus on a young Detective James Gordon and "the villains that made Gotham famous."
Bruno Heller (Rome, The Mentalist) is writing the Commissioner Gordon, which will presumably launch during the 2014-2015 TV season.
More to come...

That's great news. I was thinking about a Batman type TV show while watching Agents of SHIELD tonight. Like "why the hell is the only live action Batman TV show a total campfest?" Even if it's a spinoff like this Gordon-based show, that's still a hell of a lot better than doing nothing with the characters.

It's not unusual for other networks to host TV shows. For example, Wonder Woman was set to be on NBC.

Yes this is so common that the idea that television networks are competing as rivals completely falls apart. Television networks are owned by conglomerates and their best interest is to actually help their competition. For instance, WB produces Gotham. Time Warner will make money from estimated merchandising revenue and DVD sales. FOX will be airing Gotham so News Corporation will make some money from syndication as well as advertising. CBS Corporation will own like a few television stations FOX is broadcast in some of the major markets so it's in CBS interest that FOX gets some ratings.

This is also why you see so little competition amongst the schedule: networks try to accommodate stuff so that the shows they produce on other networks see as little competition as possible. The whole television industry is a whole bunch of oligarchs who utilize each other in order to generate as much profit as possible.

What I think is more interesting is how Bruno Heller has used his relationship and standing in WB to basically get to write the Gotham pilot. Ah, it's always great to see authorship in television but Heller is unlikely to rock the boat by doing some revolutionary programming.

Anyways, it'll be interesting to see how successful SHIELD actually is in the ratings and  how confident this project will be moving forward based on those ratings.

This is WB making this, not Joss Whedon.. There not smart enough to connect this to MOS..

Of course they could ... the only issue is that considering it's likely occurring 20 years before Man of Steel would, the connection would be little to none outside of name drops of Metropolis, etc.
